Re: Guitar of choice?

Allan

I bought an OLP MM1 2 years ago and had problems with the electrics.  On mine the neck pickup kept cutting in and cutting out.  I went through 5 of these guitars all with various problems with the electrics or flaws in the finish.  My local guitar emporium(where i bought the guitar) and i tested and checked a batch of 30 of these guitars and found faults with them all especially the neck pickup/electrics.  All i can say OLP's quality control is almost non existent.  It was a big disapointment as the guitar sounded/felt so good and the short scale neck i just loved but i got my money back from the dealer.

Re: Guitar of choice?

Scagey - I guess it really depends on my mood of the day but for the most part I use a Strat. The Strat I use the most as of late is a HSS I built using Bare Knuckle pickups. I can get most any tone I want with that guitar. You might want to check into BKP as they're located in the UK. I was turned onto them by my brother and I absolutely love them. These days to to health reasons I seem to be more into building/refinishing than I am jamming. Most every guitar I own or have owned I have tweaked or modified to some degree.

Yes I have G.A.S (gear acquisition syndrome). wink

If your looking into buying your first guitar your on the right track by asking questions. I will suggest that you don't try to buy top of the line right off. Find a good used guitar that feels good and has good tone unplugged.

Best of luck to you!

Oh yes. FMT Strats are really something. I have one too. Just in this... Odd bronze-burst.

I have a 56 LP Special with that hideously funky sweet limed mahogany yellow "TV" finish. But what makes it smoke are the ancient P-90s that are so nasty they have bad breath.

You have been showered with blessings.  That;s the sound I'm talking bout...  Luther used to play two different ones RIP...Mike Bloomfield got a sound like I had never heard in my young life at that time.

There are advantages for both, but what is the best decision?

If possible, I buy used gear. Simply because its cheaper.

Yeah, but there aint much chance of finding a used Bonamassa les paul is there?

Re: Guitar of choice?

The bonamassa les pauls are gonna run out any time soon, dunno how many are left now, but im checking out the '08 standard in goldtop, theyre not available here till october, but i heard some1 on the forum saying that they play good, i was wonderin if that means any style? Or just blues, right now, im looking for a guitar thats more playable than a PRS. Afterall, what got me into Joe in the begining was his faster stuff, and those two tone bends WHOOO!
I might look for ones online, they dont seem two expensive, i currently have an SE custom, but i know it isnt top of the range, it will do for me. (just need to change the strings right noW!)
On the subject of strings, does anybody else use elixir nanowebs? They last much longer than any other strings, and if you look around, theyre cheaper than normal aswell!! My tutor has had the same strings on for nearly 6 months! Mine tend to rust faster than his for some reason, i sweat when i play, but thats off subjest.
So try them out ( elixirs AND prs's)

A good example of the P-90 snarl is a pre-pubescent Carlos Santana on the Woodstock movie playing an SG with P-90s. I don't know what amp he's using, but the tone is, as Gollum would say, raw and wrigglin'.

The discussion of strings was recently brought up on the Acoustic thread.  Of the Elixir brand, the Nanowebs are better than the Polywebs as far as natural feel and tone.  While not perfect, they come closer than the Polywebs that feel and sound like plastic.

As far as coated strings go, the D'Addario EXP's are great.  They feel good and last longer with a nice balanced tone.  Try 'em out.  You'll like 'em better than the Elixir's.

I'm anal when it comes to strings.  Each guitar gets a fresh string change once a week regardless of how many shows I do...well, not true.  I'll change them if I do more than 2-3 shows on a set of strings.  With my acoustic however I tend not to be as anal.  My Takamine is a little brite so a string that's a little older tends to sound a little better to me.

Re: Guitar of choice?

Im keepin my eyes peeled for the EXP's dude, but for now, i've had the elixirs on for quite some time!!
But anyway, this post is on the subject of guitars!! LOL
If anybody has heard of an american company called sparrow, they're a long time manufacturing group, they have never been big in Britain, but ashton have announced that they;ll be sold in UK dealers anytime soon, and they're gonna grow, as they are good looking and sounding guitars, and stunning prices! I am waiting to try one, but the cool thing is, is that if you want one shipped from sparrow themselves, you can customize the features on their website! Surely they're not ever gonna be as big as the fenders, the deans, the gibsons, PRS etc.., etc, but check em out soon:
