Re: Cycling 2012

Wow, what a surprise Lance was cheating , right? Not! Hey, this is only the tip of the ice burg, I'm sure there are plenty of tennis players cleaning out their blood right now. There have been so many professional athletes juicing for so long, that I'm not sure who we can believe nowadays!

Man, I wish we had Hank Aaron still hitting home runs, Ray Nitschke and Dick Butkus laying people out, Gale Sayers running for touchdowns and Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell battling for the rebound. Now we're taking Sports!

I've kept away from this because my views are known and I don't want to get into things with my Bonapeeps. wink

I thought Oprah did well in parts, and failed miserably in others. Despite what was promised, there were clearly subjects that had been declared taboo in advance. He told the truth about his own use, he told half-truths about other things, avoided certain areas entirely, told some outright lies, showed more remorse for himself for getting caught, and for getting a "life sentence" than he did for his many victims, and ultimately admitted that he'd do or say just about anything to be able to take part in triathlons again!

He said that he looked up the word, "cheat" and decided it didn't apply to him because of the "level playing field". There was a tweet the next day that said he could better look of the word, "sociopath".

Meanwhile, ex Rabo riders are starting to 'come out' about the main Dutch team's doping practices going back to the 90's. The name of Dr. Leinders has fallen as he was a long time Rabo team doctor, who later worked for Sky. Leinders is now under investigation by the Belgian authorities. There is still so much more about the dirtiest era of cycling still to emerge.

Lance could help a lot if he would really come clean. However, telling the whole truth would seriously implicate others, and lay him open to US perjury charges. So, for the moment, until his immensely expensive team of legal advisers manage to arrange some kind of deal for him, Lance is still keeping his mouth shut.

He would have done better to keep it shut when he made that embarrassing, stupid, and downright disgraceful attempt at 'humor' by claiming he'd never called Betsy Andreu fat. I thought I saw Oprah shudder - would you make a 'fat' joke to Oprah? In case anyone missed her shocked and saddened reaction on Anderson Cooper just after the first interview, here it is.

btw, I love Betsy Andreu. tongue

George - I thought the fat joke showed Lance's true colors...if one was making progress towards forgiveness, that comment could make one take a step back.

It made me think of this...
A Zebra can't change its stripes:
A person isn't likely to change their behaviour.

When Lance rattled off the years he did not take any drugs, I found myself doubting whether he was truthful...I find him less credible than ever as far as being capable of telling the truth.

On a lighter note, if the postal service recouped some of the $$$$$, maybe they could keep afloat longer. lol

It was just in such awful 'taste'. I think the general consensus of people (whether cycling fans or not) who watched the interview is that they find him even less trustworthy and sympathetic now than they did before.

Before we feel too sorry for him, let's remember that his fortune is estimated at $100m, though various upcoming claims will no doubt eat into that pretty considerably.

Re: Cycling 2012

I'm sure the fee for the interview will take care of a lot of payments. That exclusive was worth millions. Many of them.
He could care less about public opinion at this point. He beat the cheaters on a level field in an orchestrated assault for years and the officials went crazy trying to catch him knowing he was, couldn't and finally got him with a fix. Water under the bridge now. Whatever it is or was, his athleticism stands tall. Cyclists know what it took and the pain endured to win at all costs since they all cheat at that level, or fill the peleton as domestiques. I think this is true in most sport now. A lifetime ban on the first transgression in all sport is the answer.

Re: Cycling 2012

So after the brouhaha for Lance Armstrong pulling the event into disrepute, is nobody following this year's Tour?

You had to have been under a rock in the north of England not to have known about "Le Grand Depart" in Yorkshire this week-end.

Got me to thinking of some appropriate music (keeping off the obvious like Tour De France & Bicycle Race:-

Terry Keeps His Clips On - Viv Stanshall
Broken Bicycles - Tom Waits
Bicycle Wheels - Ugly Kid Joe

Honourable mentions to:-
Nine Million Bicycles in Pickering
Les Bicyclette de Batley

When life gives you lemons; don't make lemonade.
Give back the lemons.  Why were the lemons free?  What's wrong with the lemons?
Do Not trust the lemons...

Re: Cycling 2012

Channel 4 - here in the UK - last night showed the, Lance Armstrong Documentary, LIE - It was riveting viewing.
The timing spot on, as the Tour rolled into London yesterday!
