Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Like you Lynn I have enjoyed the season. It became less interesting as it went on though. Not because Seb had it all won and mostly ran away with it. More though because Pirelli became more conservative with the compounds they took to the last groups of races.

RB did the best job and once they really understood the tyres they mostly had the upper hand. Was the RB the quickest car? Yes, although they often hobbled it to get the best compromoise on tyre wear but still invariably came out on top with strategy.

Seb is a worthy champion. Mark had most of the bad luck going but Vettel destroyed him this year - big time.

Kubica not coming back, probably at all in 2012, is a big blow. He'll likely not be the force he could have once been. Kimi turning up at Renault is a good move by the team, but only if they can provide him with the tools to keep him interested. Senna is the loser but I really hope he finds a berth. I think he deserves one. Williams should take him. He has 2 seasons now and I think he would show Maldano the way home as well. If not Williams then I don't know. Why Caterham (nee Lotus) keep Trulli is beyond me. His best days are loooong gone and at some point they should be seeking out the next best thing if they want to move up. Heikki will always get them points but he needs someone to challenge him. Senna will do that.

Unlike you Lynn I still think Massa has something to show. In 2012 he has to show it because he won't have the Ferrari at the end of the year. He needs to be planning a great point scoring, every race finishing season, which would then get the midfielders interested in his experience. 2012 has to be his year for his next contract with Force India, Renault or Sauber (his old stamping ground),

Barrichello. Yes it is time. He can still do it, but he really shouldn't. If he wants to still race then time to find another series.
Schumi? He'll hang on for next year. He knows now he can fight with Rosberg and that is no mean feat. But it is still competing against someone who has yet to even win and there here is with 91 wins to his name. A full season of disappointment won't be any good to him. If the car doesn't offer hima realistic chance to be qualifying and the top 6 every time out then he should hand the car over to the next guy.

Wishes for 2013. Hulkenberg back on the grid. Senna with a full time drive. Glock to stop wasting his time with Virgin (on the ridiculous) Marrussia. Lewis getting his head down and just focusing on the job, biding his time. He and Button are good team mates with different strengths. Jenson has actually stolen the team from Lewis and they wouldn't even mind him (Lewis) moving on now. What chance Lewis in a good Mercedes for 2013? I wonder? If Merc have a good year they'll all want in there at some point.

Ferrari. Anywhere near a decent car and Alonso wins the WC. I still rate him above Vettel. He still has the hunger. What he needs is a top wing man to take points off the others, so Massa should do himself a favour and up his game for 2012 and get himself another drive into the bargain.

Roll on January and Feb with new car launches. Don't go to Bahrain, change the Top 10 shoot out so that they ALL have to run or better still add up the times from all practices and arrive at an aggregate time. Fastest is on pole. That'll teach Vettel to stuff it on the Friday in future..........

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

The search function revealed nothing for this topic so clearly it is not an F1 fan!

But there are those here that are so I have dragged it back again after looking page by page.

I wrote in early December my hopes that Bruna Senna would find a berth for 2012 and glory be Williams have done the right thing and taken him on.

Theres no doubt that the work he has done getting sponsors to underwrite his drive has swayed Williams, surely a mark of how far down that once great team has fallen, but I firmly believe he is much more than a 'pay' driver.

His early karting career was truncated following his uncles death and since he re-started his career his upward path is impressive. I honestly hope and believe he will justify this opportunity. Please god that Williams at long last can build him a decent mount to show his talent. He is at least as good as Hulkenburg (who will give Di Resta a tough time this year), and a good solid performance this year in a better Williams could mark him as someone Ferrari could have an interest in as a number 2 to Alonso.

Ferrari,of course, have many options, but a Senna, with his financial support and a good driver to boot would be a fantastic proposition.

I hope it comes to pass.

A shame for Barrichello perhaps, but he really has had his chance(s). A long and distinguished career. Time for some of these guys to move over. Trulli is another and even Schumi. I'm not saying they are not good enough to be there, but is being good enough, after 10 or more years, enough?

The current testing rules have allowed these drivers to be retained beyond the norm. Teams won't take the necessary chances and rely on 'known' quantities.

In this light Red Bull's policy has to be applauded. Owning a second team dedicated to 'breaking' in new drivers. OK it might seem hard that both Sebastian Buemi and Alguasuari's (yes I know its not spelt right) have been dropped, but both have had in excess of 2 season or so to demonstrate more.

Both are good enough to be F1 drivers, but neither have shown the extra 'something' to RB that marks out a future champion. Yes a lot of it is the car and a Torro Rosso isn't an RB7 even if they might share an earlier genetic strain, but the make up of an F1 champion is clearly something more and RB haven't seen it.

Eventually, when Webber, Trulli and Schumi all go the grid will have a more youthful look about it which is just as it should be. Time is a tough master.

Something Robert Kubica will nkow of course. What do we think? With this latest setback it feels as if another season will pass him by. Its not inconceivable that he could sit in an old Ferrari this year sometime, but when I read his latest news it just felt like it could be over. You can't overlook just how strong willed he is though. I mean for a Pole to even get to F1 says he determined he is. It would be a enormous feelgood story if he could do it.

I still hope. But I would no longer be surprised to learn that it is over for him.

Roll on the season!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Once again Mike you've provided a masterful insight into the wonderful world of F1.  So thanks for that, and well done on your prediction about Bruno Senna.  You and I differ about his abilities and potential but I hope he will demonstrate more maturity this year and not just be in the seat because of his name and connections.

Shame if Robert Kubica doesn't get a drive but he's seemingly jinxed.  He was so impressive during 2010 then had that nasty accident before the start of the 2011 season and now I read he's broken his leg after a skating accident.

Then we've got the return of the Flying Finn, Kimi Raikkonen.  That'll make 6 world champions lining up on the same starting grid.  Gripping stuff.

It's shaping up to be another great season but unfortunately not one that I'll be able to enjoy now that it's gone over to Sky Sports which I don't have and don't want.  So, I'll enjoy the titbits that the BBC intend to throw at us from time to time and take in the odd race from the comfort of a pub armchair.

I agree with you Lyn. I try to avoid anything to do with the Murdoch Media - where i can. Hopefully, NI/Sky will sink .. Oops, bad analogy!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

So here we are again. First F1 practice over. I don't have any TV problem choices this season as full in depth coverage from RTL keeps me fully up to date.

The winter 'silly season' proved not much as ever, except a couple of things. The Ferrari is the 'dog' of the moment.

12th and 16th can't have been what the Scudiera were hoping for.....

According to form the person who has won pole in Albert Park since 2007 has gone on to win the championship. So shall we crown Lewis Hamilton now and save 8 months of trawling around the globe.

Fantastic performnace by the Mclarens straight out of the box, and by some margin over the 3rd place man.......surprise surprise....Romain Grosjean!

Lotus proving that their winter showing was no fluke. OK Kimi's practice was a disaster, but he must be happy. The car has potential and the first 5 races is the place to show it. With Ferrari out of the top six there are 2 extra places always going begging.....

Webber and Vettel 5th and 6th. Didn't seem too disappointed and I suspect the Red Bulls are full to the gunnels with fuel. Nico Rosberg looked a good bet for pole until a tyre problem and some over late braking rueld him out. He starts 7th but another one to hint that the car being so consistent over long runs that he is fueld right up. That being so, if they haven't split the strategy Schumi is well placed. In 4th spot the old man looks and sounds very confident. Lets hope for a good showing, but a Mclaren win looks pretty set right now. Early days and the longest season ever to come.

And what of the middle and back end? Well Caterham haven't yet bridged the gap to the middle pack. Hulkenberg (FIndia), Ricciardo(STR) and Maldona(Williams) all got through to the final qualifying just showing the spread of possibilties as ist stood today. If the middle of the field is that tight and that is where Ferrari finds themselves they are going to be in desperate starights indeed.

I'm hoping for a good year. As Niki Lauda wrily observed "the best looking car on pole at least". He has a point. If Mclaren prove beauty is best maybe the others might ditch that awful 'stepped nose' concept. I'll guess we'll get used to it.

I for one anyway say welcome back F1...........!

+1 on the ugliness of the step nose and on the Mclarens beautiful lines, however it's Button that will reign supreme methinks...

Step nose is a problem?  Heck F1 cars have been ugly/odd looking since the 1990's (thanks Benneton).  I miss the older days with the high liter V10s and 12s.   F1 racing is not about cost control/level the playing field rules or being green/saving the earth.  I don't watch nearly as much as I used to.  Just don't have the time.  I also miss being able to see the race in Indy.  Maybe they'll be back some day.

Stop press!

whats this? some of the teams are going to challenge the legality of Mercedes DRS air recirculating system.

My oh my. What clever people. Charlie Whiting cleared this system on Wednesday, and now, because of the Merc teams good practice showing they all want it 'clarified'. Merc have just been cleverer, thats all.

I see from the BBc that Ross Brawn hints that if it is protested and upheld he will protest the exhaust systems several cars have which he believes breaches the 'Blown floor' ban.

They really are clever people in F1. I think the merc will be allowed to keep it and then they will have to have something similar - just like the F-duct from 2010 and hot 'n cold blown floors last year. You couldn't dream this up. Its actually why I love F1.

Poor Ferrari. They'll just have another gizmo to add to the long list of head scratching items they currently have. Still at least know it is nothing to do with the nuts behind the wheel!

Racing is ever thus. Smart engineers find a way to cheat the rules and exploit a loophole, then formula kings close it, only to find a new cheat lurkint in the wings. Then the not quite so clever cry foul and demand the fast become slower (than them).
Gotta love it!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

PSmith...........you know your onions sir!

Button indeed reigned supreme. A total 'Vettelesque' performance. Great start, blitzed away as much as poss before the DRS could kick in and then managed tyres and race as only he can. 10/10 for Jensen.

Lewis had wheelspin and then bad luck with the safety car timings. Great day for McLaren though. RB must be happy too as this was damage limitation. Alonso drove a faultless race to salvage something.

Driver of the day would have been Maldanaldo but for the last lap error. German commentators speculated something awry in the engine note coming through the kink but I thought he just got on the grass and gas abit too lively. Schame that - although I thought Williams would have been better counselling him to back off anyway. No way do you mug Alonso out of a point scoring position on the last 2 laps. They should have settled for 6th and kept out of his slipstream.

Good midfield battle in there today so its clear that a number of cars are quite closely matched. Shame Kimi started so far back as I suspect he coud have 5th place today.

The Mercs. I thought Schumi was looking good and providing a natural barrier to Vettel. Shame the transmission let go, but he has reasons to be optimistic. Rosberg got shuffled down the a order a bit and then it was all tyre woes apparently.

All good stuff. Lets hope the McLarens do it again in Maylasia. Do the Championship a lot of good if RB/Vettel are forced to work for it a bit more.

Well thanks. I am a great Button fan. He does the job cleanly, looks after his car and tyres and uses his head. Lewis is great and exciting to watch but how often this has been his downfall. It's also a promising year as the cars are now much more evenly matched. All bodes well for the future.

All of the above....was late in last night-took jr and two mates up to Edinburgh for Enter Shakiri gig,2am return-so set sky+ for it-was an excellent race from start to finish, the politics and techy stuff'll sort itself out, nearly had a flutter on Kimi making top 6,with the last lap melee, could've been !Have sports for the footie and cricket,HD REALLY makes it real, the pre and after race needs a tweak or two,but liked the way the ads weren't inappropriately placed, spliting pre-race and race nearly caused pain as i almost didn't hit R for that section on Planner!

Come on you Blades!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

First race of the year and what a good one.  Button was supreme in the McLaren and ended up with a well deserved win.  Nice to see Kimi "the Iceman" back again.  I loved hearing Kimi over the radio asking 'why do they keep waving blue flags at me?' until he was told kindly by his engineer that they weren't for him they were for slower drivers.  He's been away too long.

Malaysia next week .....

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Rain always does the trick and shakes up the field somewhat. Malaysia has done it before to dramatic effect.

I was surprised just how many of the top men got caught out really. Jenson overcooking it was unusual, Vettel also  iscalculating somewhat. Pretty much all of them had their moments.

Fernando did pretty much what he had to and kept his nose clean and once it all settled down there he was. With the conditions masking the apparent defects in his cars normal performance he was his usual superb self.

That said Perez had a real chance of victory yesterday for Sauber as he had a clear car advantage on the drying track which only serves to emphasise just how off the normal pace Ferrari are.

Great result for both though. From a adamge limittation point of view a great couple of first races for Ferrari.

Before the race I was going to write how Perez / Massa would be a natrual swap. Felipe has driven for Sauber twice already so going back would be no problem. Perez has shown he is capable of dealing with all types of conditions with maturity. He looks a good bet for Ferrari next year I would say and maybe Massa going in the other direction.

The other drives of the day should be Bruno Senna and Paul di Resta. Good that when the top players fall out of the running that some of the other talents shine.............

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

......and now Bernie is back at it again. Dropping the hint in Malaysia that he has already done deals with the leading teams to ensure a new 'Concorde Agreement' gets signed and that he and his partners get a new contract for the next xxxx years.

This octigenarian midget still holds the thrall of the F1 bosses. Why can't they get over him and kick the prick out? He has done his bit for F1, which was considerable, but now he just isn't needed anymore. CVC, his partners, skim off billions every year from the business, on a deal that Bernie and his bum chum Max Mosley cooked up when Max headed the FIA.

Now, to get a new deal he has promised the likes of Ferrari and RB and possibly McLaren enhanced 'bonus payments' ahead of the other teams, and yet still the others seem ready to flock to his banner.

If only the teams had stuck together a couple of years ago and forged ahead with their own series, Bernie and his mates would be stuck with a worthless commercial rights contract with the FIA, but no F1.

Ferrari screwed everyone then and they are in the mix to screw everyone now. The rich get even richer and so on................

Why do they do it? because they like the status quo and Bernie knows that.

Thank goodness Mercedes are holding out and of course have the financial clout to fight it through the courts if necessary. Of course, it won't come to that. Bernie will do a deal that includes them, sort of, and all will be well in his world.

I guess it is one of the reasons Charlie Whiting might be forced to find against Merc's current DRS qualifying advantage. Now being 'reviewed' for a 3rd time. Bernie won't want Mercedes to be anywhere near winning just yet as it would only strengthen their hand. Watch this space on that one. Personally, I think Charlie will now ban it "in the interests of the F1".

After all, Bernie doesn't care if the manufacturers walk away.......only Ferrari count to him. He and Luca at Ferrari are so bent they can both actually see themselves coming before they've arrived!

There was a time when I admired (Bernie)him. How he revolutionised the sport commercially and funded the safety improvements. But like all absolute rulers he is corrupted, absolutely.

Don't sign the deal! Let Bernie sweat. Take control of your own sport!

Pipe dream..........or maybe that should be exhaust pipe dream...........
