Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend
Like you Lynn I have enjoyed the season. It became less interesting as it went on though. Not because Seb had it all won and mostly ran away with it. More though because Pirelli became more conservative with the compounds they took to the last groups of races.
RB did the best job and once they really understood the tyres they mostly had the upper hand. Was the RB the quickest car? Yes, although they often hobbled it to get the best compromoise on tyre wear but still invariably came out on top with strategy.
Seb is a worthy champion. Mark had most of the bad luck going but Vettel destroyed him this year - big time.
Kubica not coming back, probably at all in 2012, is a big blow. He'll likely not be the force he could have once been. Kimi turning up at Renault is a good move by the team, but only if they can provide him with the tools to keep him interested. Senna is the loser but I really hope he finds a berth. I think he deserves one. Williams should take him. He has 2 seasons now and I think he would show Maldano the way home as well. If not Williams then I don't know. Why Caterham (nee Lotus) keep Trulli is beyond me. His best days are loooong gone and at some point they should be seeking out the next best thing if they want to move up. Heikki will always get them points but he needs someone to challenge him. Senna will do that.
Unlike you Lynn I still think Massa has something to show. In 2012 he has to show it because he won't have the Ferrari at the end of the year. He needs to be planning a great point scoring, every race finishing season, which would then get the midfielders interested in his experience. 2012 has to be his year for his next contract with Force India, Renault or Sauber (his old stamping ground),
Barrichello. Yes it is time. He can still do it, but he really shouldn't. If he wants to still race then time to find another series.
Schumi? He'll hang on for next year. He knows now he can fight with Rosberg and that is no mean feat. But it is still competing against someone who has yet to even win and there here is with 91 wins to his name. A full season of disappointment won't be any good to him. If the car doesn't offer hima realistic chance to be qualifying and the top 6 every time out then he should hand the car over to the next guy.
Wishes for 2013. Hulkenberg back on the grid. Senna with a full time drive. Glock to stop wasting his time with Virgin (on the ridiculous) Marrussia. Lewis getting his head down and just focusing on the job, biding his time. He and Button are good team mates with different strengths. Jenson has actually stolen the team from Lewis and they wouldn't even mind him (Lewis) moving on now. What chance Lewis in a good Mercedes for 2013? I wonder? If Merc have a good year they'll all want in there at some point.
Ferrari. Anywhere near a decent car and Alonso wins the WC. I still rate him above Vettel. He still has the hunger. What he needs is a top wing man to take points off the others, so Massa should do himself a favour and up his game for 2012 and get himself another drive into the bargain.
Roll on January and Feb with new car launches. Don't go to Bahrain, change the Top 10 shoot out so that they ALL have to run or better still add up the times from all practices and arrive at an aggregate time. Fastest is on pole. That'll teach Vettel to stuff it on the Friday in future..........
