Topic: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

I’m very excited that the new F1 season kicks off this weekend and what a season it promises to be.

In the red and white corner of McLaren, the reigning world champion Jenson Button will surely be looking to capitalise on last year’s performance.  It won’t be easy for him moving to a new team, especially with Lewis Hamilton as your teammate, but he’s matured over the past year and has the confidence of a championship win behind him.  Nice to see Philipe Massa back in action for Ferrari after his horrendous accident last year which saw him miss out on the latter part of last season and possibly his first world championship win.  He’s teamed with the fiery Fernando Alonso.  Forza Ferrari! And then not forgetting the 7 times world champion, Michael Schumacher, who at 40 years old has dusted himself off out of retirement to race for the new Mercedes team.  With that line up of drivers for starters and the new changes to the rules which sees refuelling banned (hooray to that) and a change in points awarded, this could be a classic year.

Anyone else a fan?

Yes LynB, i also follow F1. Good luck to both Jenson and Lewis, flying the flag. I think Michael will find it hard, to start with, but he may win a few races.
Philipe will be challenging, along with Mark Webber.
Not sure how that new, No refuelling  rule is going to work, bigger fuel tanks i guess....?

I believe the cars have had to be modified to allow for larger fuel tanks.  I remember back in the days Nigel Mansell having to push his car over the finish line to get some points as he had run out of fuel!

another year of politics and racing decisions being fought out in the law courts by the rich kids, - F1 is so out of step with not only the world we live in but racing itself...

now the half full one:

Will be good to see Schumacher racing with the young guns

Now the reality one:

Watch bikes on MotoGP and SBK, much more entertaining as a racing spectacle.

Moto GP starts April 11th in Qatar, and there is even an American round at Laguna Seca:

Already one race in from Phillip Island Aus, - and Leon Haslam is leading the way, - trouble is I remember seeing him as a baby in his mothers arms at Donington. Works Ducati's running second and third at the moment.

Yes, I'm old enough to remember, poor old Nigel. It was sad, but funny at the same time.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Ian's half empty glass is already has souring beer in it.

Mclaren's rear wing has already been the subject of much discussion. FIA's representative has passed it but the rest of the teams claim it goes against the 'spirit' of the rules. Hah! How long since there has been any of that?

But, naturally, allowing will now require the other teams to enter into an arms race of spending to do the same, thus negating all the cost cutting initiatives they were trying to make. It is a debacle like this that support Ian's view.

I'm a F1 nut and have been since my first GP in '74 and whilst I consider it the pinnacle of motorsport it is also the pinnacle of pointlessness when technical rule bending mar both the sport and the fantastic ability of the drivers. A one-make formula would clearly solve the problem but then it would cease to be F1 as we know it.

As for this year whilst on paper it looks a mouth watering prospect the truth is there is unlikely to be much change in the boredom level at least in the early part of the races. The cars will be filled to the brim with fuel to last the race, they can barely overtake each other anyway due to the loss of grip when following other cars closely, and because the heavier weight they will have to manage the tear wear very carefully until the last quarter of the race.

If they get that far then we might see some racing. For my own part I think Jenson made a right and brave decision which I hope pays off. His gentler style may well be perfectly suited to these new circumstances. Schumi is a fox and will make sure he is in the mix at the death. However, providing Massa doesn't get up Fernando's nose too often I see Alonso ending the year as champion.

Having now firmly put the mockers on his entire season I suppose Red Bull will drive off into the distance.

For my kicks as ever I shall be concentrating on the lower end of the grid hoping for Sauber to spring some surprises, Robert Kubica to drag Renault back into respectability and that Lotus and Virgin make a real fist of it. Great to have the Senna name back in an F1 car even if it is likely to be a dog.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

I've always been a motor sport nut case and have followed F1 for years, actually was at Aintree for the British Grand Prix there (jeez, how long ago was that?) Have also been into Bike racing too. The last few years in F1 has seen technology ruin the racing. I really hope that the new rules bring back the racing that I used to enjoy so much, but sadly I agree with the above comment. For downright excitement and sheer thrill of the race - sorry but nothing equals two wheel racing! Jeremy Clarkson - well what do you expect!

you do know what he thinks of football and anybody who has an inkling of interest in it??  smile Actually that is the funny thing about Clarkson, the more of a pratt he is and the more offensive he is to people the more those people like him! Well perhaps with the exception of the Marina Owners club! A lot of us bikers will purposelessly go out of out way on a Sunday morning just to ride through his little village in the hope that we might catch a glimpse of him!! And just in-case he is tucked up in bed we make sure we have our loudest baffle free exhaust pipes on so he knows that we are paying him tribute  wink

Guys, if you want racing, and love racing for competition then go watch bike racing or perhaps car club racing, - here are a couple of my videos from Goodwood last year (turn up the sound and bask in the rich tones) :

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

I have been to lots of F1 meets and although fun they are nowhere as exciting as bikes. Give me the TT anyday they deserve a medal for bravery, now there is some real seat of the pants old school racing, that you can catch from the side of the road drinking good beer without paying £6 a pint.
