The new album came out today and for me it's a bit disappointing.  I like the first song, "Never Lookin' Back" (good rockin' blues) and the last, an interesting cover of "Baby The Rain Must Fall", but everything in between has a generic sound to it.  Maybe it'll grow on me but there's no "wow" on this disc.

I bought it today with great anticipation. Very dissapointed - this album is so soft and lacking of any real guitar on it. Wait a decade for this; everyone wants to be Justin Beiber I guess - probably pays better

Nothing worse than being stoked about a new cd by a favorite artist and then it lands and it does absolutely nothing for you.

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

I had the chance to listen to "How I Go" for 8 hours straight driving from Detroit to Wisconsin.

after listening to it the ____ time:
1. what? nothing jaw dropping
2. ok... a couple songs - the rest are ho-hum
3. track 12 sounds like song about having kids
4. ok, I can listen to most of these... except for track 12
5. I'm getting used to it, but still looking for diamonds in the ruff
6. The first 5 or so songs are starting to sound good
7. ok it's not as bad as I thought it was
8. I can pretty much listen to all these songs and I can accept them... except for 12.

So I got used to it... but usually when I hear an album for a third time, I can stomach the newness. This album took longer, and it still didn't wow me. It was almost like a sign of age for him... and even Buddy Guy can still play like he is young... so I'm left shrugging my shoulders.

I got it yesterday. I was a little disappointed at first but more listens it does grow on you. I would have rather heard a little less 'filler sounds' and more 'stripped' versions of these songs. I thought there are some great KWS lead guitar highlights but overall it lacks some fire. Maybe these tunes were overplayed in the studio with too many takes? I really think Joe's approach of getting in (the studio) laying it down and getting out is a great approach!

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

Love the album. I think it's really good. Got the version with 17 tracks on it. Am listening to it a few times before I make any specific comments. I do really like it though.

I'm right with you Deezer!

I never owned a KWS CD until Live in Chicago, but that one really grabbed me and I just had to pre-order the new release.

Maybe there's a few tracks on there that the KWS diehards would consider a little mellow, or maybe just seem out of place on the album, but for the main part it's just killer. I've listened to the album 4 times now, and there's maybe 3 tracks that don't do much for me. That still leaves 14, and that's way more than you get on most albums these days.

I'd also say it's very much a grower, and I'm finding more things catching my ear with each play. And hey, there's plenty of "real guitar" too!

Love it, Love it, Love it.

I had high hopes for the CD, but after reading some of the pans here, I was feeling let down in advance.  I ordered from amazon and the 17 track speacial edition CD was waiting for me when i got home from work last night.  Quickly loaded onto ipod for a listen while at the gym.  Made it through the first 15 tracks and there wasn't one i wanted to skip through.  Noah's voice is fantastic.  Kenny's guitar work is soulful, melodic and mature.  And hey, what can be bad with Chris Layton bangin the skins.

this is just good ol shreezport looziana rockin blues and this looziana kid loves it.

George was so nice to put my photo of the last time I saw Kenny in this link, I can't wait to see these guys perform again.  Noah's voice is amazing and Kenny is great, fantastic duo, smokin' band...

I may have been a little hasty with my first comments. I'm really liking this New KWS record!

KWS and Noah were on Jimmy Kimmel last night.  I haven't heard the whole record yet but I think this track rocks.  cool

One thing is sure, you don't like track 12.
But to hear an album 8 times on and on and on ?!

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

Well, one thing this thread shows for sure is that everyone has their own opinion.

I have listened to the new CD numerous times now and really like it. Yes it may be a bit over produced, but it is definitely road music. At least for me. Put it in the changer in my truck and crank it. Good stuff.

Track 12 - "Who's Gonna Catch You Now" gave me chills the first time I listened to it and still does. Personally, for me it is possibly the best track on the album. I am not looking to inflame anyone here. Just voicing my opinion. There are a few tribute licks to the Allman Brothers lurking in there and I like it.

When I have seen KWS he has always been cordial and friendly. Just goes to show that experiences can be different. On the other hand, my one time seeing Buddy Guy left a very bad impression and I was very disappointed. This was at the HOB in Las Vegas a few years ago. Buddy just seemed to be going through the paces and playing because he had to. I have never experienced that with any of Joe's shows.

Anyway, to me the new KWS cd is quite good. Just my opinion.

BTW - I still listen to my Buddy Guy CD's on a regular basis. Everyone can have a not so hot night and I don't believe you should dismiss an artist on the basis of one disappointing gig or inicident.

LBB - I think this forum welcomes different opinions and I for one will give Kenny a better listen.  Thanks for posting.

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

I definitely want to get a hold of Kenny's new disc. I really liked what I heard on the sampler and it's probably the only way I'm gonna extract Matt Schofield from my CD player in my truck. If JB doesn't want to Stratoblast anymore then these 2 guys will fill that void that I crave. Matt doesn't actually play a Fender strat, but an SVL. He played his natural blonde model exclusively when I saw him Thur. night.

It's a very good CD.  Can't wait to see KWS along with George Thorogood in a couple of weeks.  So stoked!

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

OK.....So I picked up his CD today and gotta say I like it. It doesn't strike me as earth shattering or jaw dropping like "Dust Bowl" was for me, but definitely worth keeping on my I-pod. Got some great driving tunes so I may have to make an extended trip thru the
mountains to listen to this one, BCC2 and some Chickenfoot. "Get Your Motor Runnin'"!
Lvbluesboy-I specifically wanted to listen to "Who's Gonna Catch You Now" after your recommendation and while I'm not as enthralled, the song subject reminded me of "I'll Be Around" by Steve Vai off his "Ultra Zone" CD. My oldest friend and I were driving up in the Sierras to go trout fishing one day and he asked if I could recommend a song for the father/daughter dance at his daughter's upcoming wedding and I suggested this. Halfway thru he was in tears. The subject's a little too intense for a wedding, but it's a great song nonetheless.
All in all I wholeheartedly recommend this disc. (KWS that is!)

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: New Kenny Wayne Shepherd

I picked up the expanded version last Saturday and find this to be a simply splendid cd. I think Kenny and Noah are back to form on this compared to the last

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.
