Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

Its more then likely the clean, the amp has a master volume and he could turn the normal channel's volume all the way up or to suit.  Also he's driving the front end harder now because he's using humbuckers so that will explain the gainier sound.  Joe doesn't use channels on amps so this makes more sense to me then using the distortion channel, because he's not wide open with that amp.

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

I was gonna buy a ls gold, because I like the mid boost now that I realized how to use it and Joe actually uses it A LOT if you look closely. I'll be getting a used set of 3 for 50$ + shipping/tax so I'll be getting 3 used for the price of one new smile

See how that will work out, if it's a bust I'm sure I can sell them for the same amount and if not I haven't lost much money.

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

I played a home brew electronics "Big D" today. It seemed REALLY nice. First off, it had that chunk fat tone I was after, it had potential for more gain than necessary but it just sounded so big and authentic. I didn't get a good chance to try it though, I tried through the same amp I have but that amp was not functioning properly. The treble button didn't work so the tone was to dark and then it all went south until it didn't work really... -.-

Although I need to give this pedal more time big_smile

I honestly cannot say why I have the spider valve. I just run it on the clean channel with my fulltone, but that sounds kind of nice. Though I did not own the fulltone when I bought the spider valve. This amp does nothing for me, I don't hate it I don't love it, it's just okay. If I wanna run a second amp, I will get something I really like. I just don't have the dinero for two amps right now smile I think I'll get a 50w VM head along with a 4x12, will be nice to have my first half stack smile

My brother in-law is in a hardcore band and got rid of is very used Mesa Dual Rec and got a Spider Valve Head, has it running through an Orange Cab and he uses a semi-hollow body Ibanez guitar.  His sound is pretty huge, warm and allot of sizzle but far from bluesy.  If I can I will see if I can get a recording to post or link.  I think the cab and the guitar have allot to due with this. His influence is John Christ (Danzig) and you can really tell in his clean parts.

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

Yeah true. Fact is I just run the amp on the twang channel and run everything, dist, fx through pedals...

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

ZampraZ I still think you are making a good tone decision.  My theory on tone is that you should be able to get at least 90% of "The Tone" with just the amp and guitar only.  After that you just pepper in the other 10% with blended amps, overdrives, delays, reverb, etc to fill out the sound as needed.  I picked up a 50 watt Dailey C-series head (based on the old plexis but has to my ears some of that Dumble "chirp" big_smile ) and 2x12 cab.  I am mostly using just that one amp and my Les Paul getting rediculous results.  I add a subtle delay and my Fulldrive for a sustain/mid boost.  That setup does about 95% of what my overly elaborate larger rig does!  So did you decide on the Marshall VM over the Ceriatone  2550?  Inquiring minds need to know! tongue

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

I have not yet had a chance to try the VM. The closest retailer is about a 50-60 minute drive from here. I might take the train there next week to try it, or maybe Thursday when Joe is playing in that town. The only issue there is that that store closes like 2-3 hours before the concert begins so then I would have to wander the streets of Malmö for 2-3 hours xD

After installing the lace golds I feel that I would like to post up a horrible low quality clip which is also further destroyed by youtube.

Yeah this clip is really random wankin so it should be consumed with a grain of salt and some tex mex sauce smile

I really like the lace golds. Sounded the way I wanted them to and they are really quiet.

Yep, I think you've got it! Great playing too!

Wow, pretty cool clip and well played Zampraz. smile
The strat sounds very good with this gold pickups.
I'm always amazed at how decent guitarists are around here.

That sounds great man!  I think the Lace Sensors was a good move.  That is the tone that I remember out of any Clapton Strat that I've played.  It's clear, but very thick without any of that piercing twang that you get on most vintage style stratocasters.  BTW you are a smoking player!  You should make that Marshall scream!

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

Thanks guys, but please, that was crap playing smile

Anyways, It's between the Marshall and Ceriatone. I might get a chance to try the VM on thursday but I'm not sure. I can get a pretty nice tone now, but when I plug it into a Marshall it sounds a bit more "real" or present, hard to say. There is a big difference in having amp distortion and pedal distortion...

I don't think there is a comparison between a mass produced, pcb amp (VM) and a hand wired, well built, well reviewed amp for a similar price. I think it's a no brainer, I'd go for the Ceritone!

Also, I like a humble player...but that is not crap playing, and you know it! tongue

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

If it were my money I'd go for the Ceriatone no question.  You will spend less money, get more of an amp, and it'll look cooler.  A new 50 watt Vintage modern is over $1300; you take that money to Ceriatone and you get a point-to-point wired replica of the legendary Silver Jubilee.  I'd check out www.gabkits.com if you are interested in custom color/option head cabinets.  The 2550 without head cabinet from Ceriatone is $710, add shipping for about $170-$200, and $250 for gabkits headcab.  So roughly $1160 at your door for a custom handwired 2550 clone vs $1300 + for a mass produced PCB Marshall.

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

Hehe, thanks guys. All I'm saying is, there was alot of fast lick-wankin and less good choice of notes. But maybe that worked for that song.

For an amp cabinet, I don't really care as long as it's the cheapest option.
The price for the Ceriatone 2555 with shipping is $1200 to Sweden, or the 2550 for $1035 with shipping.
So after taxes the 2550 would land at $1430 and the 2555 at $1640.
The VM would cost about the same, but sometimes there are used ones for 3/5 the price. Naturally this plan rests on the fact that I can convince my mother to buy me a 4x12 hmm . If not, I won't have the $ for either of those choices. But either way I'm getting the 4x12 first.

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

Btw I know Joe said stay away from the 50 watters but... The 100 watter is a bit expensive. Do you guys have any info/opinions on this?

I have 50watter and sounds fine to me but this is the only
Jube I have played whereas Joe on the other hand has
played lots . looking at the schematics the both circuits
are identical so the main difference is larger output transformer
and 2 extra el34 tubes which for my money would give more
bottom end and headroom. maybe ALEX chime in here as he has
both 2555 and 2550

BTW a 2x12 would be sufficient , 4x12s are great but not easy to lug around
