Topic: Question about clean channel on a DSL 600 Marshall

A friend of mine has a Marshall DSL 600 and the distortion channel is fine.  But the clean channel has no volume to it what so ever.  Does anybody have an idea of what could be wrong with my buddys amp.  He bought it new and said that its always had a problem with it.  It doesn't get louder then a wisper.

Re: Question about clean channel on a DSL 600 Marshall

dsl 100 surely?

I think I'm just going to say what anyone else would say. Take it to a store to be seen to. Unless it's a silly mistake like thinking putting up the gain on the clean will distort it, then what I'd say it, try putting up the gain.

Ask him if the other setting on the classic gain works. The crunch setting

Make sure ALL the tubes are seated properly.

Re: Question about clean channel on a DSL 600 Marshall

I thought it was a JCM 600 it has 60 watts power and is 2 channels.  The Distortion Channel is loud and clear, but the clean channel has no volume to it what so ever.  I jammed together over the weekend and it sounds great but just doesn't have the clean working properly.   I was just hoping someone could narrow down some problems he might be having before he talked to a amp tech.

Re: Question about clean channel on a DSL 600 Marshall

JCM 2000 TSL 60 then?
It will maybe be something as simple as the pot for the volume on that channel doesnt work. But get your pal to check the crunch setting. not the lead setting, the crunch.

Re: Question about clean channel on a DSL 600 Marshall

Do the tubes sit horizontally inside the head or vertically?  I think this will clear up the confusion.  There WAS a JCM 600 but they discontinued it due to overheating issues and unreliability.  The JCM2000 was a better designed version of the JCM 600 theme (clean/crunch + higher gain w/ reverb).  The JCM600 generally sounded good (maybe a few lemons here and there) and may be worth taking to a quailfied repair guy.  I personally would sell it and get a different model for the reasons mentioned above.

Ah, that the head with the knobs on the top?
I have seen those but was a little thrown by it saying DSL 600 at the start. Figured maybe it was a TSL or something.
Was the JCM 600 called dual super lead too?

Yes the JCM600 was the one with the knobs on top!  It was a very unusual design for Marshall.  I know a guy who has one and he's constantly getting it fixed or debating over the tone...I would say keep it around if you didn't already invest too much into it for collectors sake.  Can't have too many amps! big_smile I don't think that the JCM 600 was refered to as a "dual super lead" amplifier, but like I said before it is very similar in function the the DSL series.

was cause it said DSL on the post I thought maybe it was a dual super lead too.

Re: Question about clean channel on a DSL 600 Marshall

Yes it was called Dual super lead DSL and it was a JCM 600.  The amp is discontinued and I don't think he's had problems with the tone of it, because the distortion channel rocked this past weekend when we jammed.  The clean just has no volume to it.
