Joe I have a question about distortion pedals. What would you recommend to get a good crunchy distortion without getting into the Heavy Metal sound? I Play through a Mesa Lonestar special and use Primarily stock Lp's And strats. My style would be gospel/blues/classic rock. I use a Fulltone Trower pedal which I'm in love with(it sounds awesome with either my guitars) but Im looking for a new fix to use along with it. Any suggestions???

Joe likes midrange and to my ears most Mesa's sound scooped in that frequency. That especially applies to the Lonestar which to my ears is very hot-rodded Fender "SRV" type tone if you will. I would probably put a tubescreamer of some sort in there to fill out the midrange. I can personally reccomend the TS808 RI (Joe uses one) or a Fulldrive II Mosfet. The Fulldrive is honestly a better overall pedal with a lot more tones PLUS a boost side as well. My vote goes Fulldrive II, good luck!

If you wanna have a great sounding overdrive/distortion I can only tell you: rodenberg amplification's GAS pedals - they are are like better and stronger TubeScreamers...
Thanks for the suggestions. I went out trying pedals today and actually I ended up buying a T-Rex Mudhoney pedal. I did try the Fulltone it was cool but the t-rex was closer to what I was lookin for. anywho's...Thanks for the help.

The cool thing about the Lonestar is that it is def. mid scooped (great for pairing), but with the option to change the tubes on the fly between 6l6's and el34's makes it in the realm of both worlds. IDK if you own one or not, but if you've played it in the store its got 6l6's giving it that fendery sound. I've changed mine to el34's and it puts it on the Marshall side - better gain and more tighter sound. There are a few tricks on that amp to really make it scream... its took me a while, but I know that amp like the back of my hand now lol.

Got Mule 3178... Any more hints on this amp would be appreciated. Is it ok we discuss gear on here? If not I can give you my email. I dont want to abuse this site. But Id like some more ideas if ya wouldnt mind( and if Joe Dont mind us using this section this way) Thanks

Hey b4j - just realized your using the Special - I have the 100 watt one. No biggie. I don't think you can swap out the tubes like in the bigger one. (All #'s in o'clock) What I find best is keeping the send on the back around 10, putting the master on full, keeping the solo on 0 and off, and using the output as the master volume, but I drive it around 10 so its still sick loud. The drive and gain I set both to 12. The treble I find best works between 10 and 12, mids 1 and 3, bass 3 and full. Presence somewhere around 12. I use the thicker setting for better low end. I'd also use the highest wattage setting. I don't use reverb b/c in my set up its the delay amp (the reverb is pretty lush tho 
). IDK if you have the stock Mesa tubes, but I'm not a fan of them so I swapped mine out for JJ's. I use EV's too. Hope this helps. Use some quality cables and she will scream. Great FX loop too.

Joe has 4 amp heads and 2 cabs...I am guessing 2 heads are connected to each cab. How is this done? Does the wiring in the cab have to be altered and if so how?
Each head is conected to 2 ev 12-l. the cabs ar stereo , thus 2 inputs per cab. I hope this clears things up.
Hi joe! I was just checking out the marshall site and found this article about that you used the Vintage Modern on the Jools Holland show..and that you were checking out the 100 watt version in the studio..Could you maybe give me some settings?=d

is each head plugged into 2 jacks or is each head or is each plugged into 1 stereo hook up where 1 head is in the left and 1 in the right?
The normally available cabs are 1x12, 2x12, 4x12 in mono, and additionally there are 2x12 and 4x12 in stereo, that means that these cabs have 2 inputs, for two amps, and at a 2x12 cab both inputs go into one of the two speakers, and at a 4x12 cab, as it is used by Joe, every input leads to two of the four speakers.
To sum up - Joe uses 4 amps and all of them go, splitted on two stereo 4x12 cabs, into 2 different speakers.

Think of each of my 4x12 cabs as 2 2x12 cabs.. each are split with a separate jack and a divider in the middle.. the ones I am taking on this tour are Category 5 made. They sound great and punchy. I wear my cabs out almost on a yearly basis.. The amps are subject to taste.. I do recommend the EV's.. The vintage modern is set at maximum. great reverb and texture.. plus they did a mid boost!!! great for guys like me. I am also loving a 18 year old Bogner Exstacy right now.. The "D" Setting is fantastic.. So the final 2009 rig is as follows...
1. 1987 Silver Jubilee 100
2. Bogner Exstacy 100/ or Cat 5 JB 100
3. Van Weelden red/silver panel Twinkelland and twinkleator
4 Carol Ann JB 100 blue man
Effects chain.. all boss!! LOL
through the twinklelator.. Boss half rack chorus, dd3 delay, and rev 5
