Topic: NEW IN TOWN

Hi I've just joined the forum so I thought I would say hello to everyone out there. I was recently introduced to joes Live from nowhere in Paradise album a few weeks ago and was totaly amazed at the quality and the guitar playing, absolutely brilliant. So taken up with it I've been telling everyone and loaning out the cd..I saw yeterday that Joe is coming to England so I will be going to Sheffield in April, what a bonus. I love listening to guitar and one of my favourites is Bill Nelson who was lead in Be Bop Deluxe many years ago, early 70's but he is still recording many solo cd's. Joe has now been added to the list.

Welcome Dukeofc to this forum - you'll find it interesting.
I've never heard of Bill Nelson before your mention and would like to know which guitar song of his you recommend.

Re: NEW IN TOWN

hello Dukeofc,

A warm welcome from me too! Enjoy your stay here and keep posting! I'm here for more than 4 years now and still enjoy it very much!

About Bill Nelson, Curby. He was the singer guitarplayer from Be-Bop de Luxe as Dukeofc already mentioned. I bought their live double LP- Life in the AirAge- in the 70's.

The best song for me  is Shine. 9 min. and 4 sec brilliant music and a topnotchsolo in the middle. In Holland the LP was a double one but this song was on an extra EP with it. So you had 2 normal LP"S plus a smaller one as well! I had never seen that before and seen it never after.

Welcome dukeofc. Bill Nelson, didn't expect to see that name on here. Just goes to show as always....

Like Andre said, Be Bop Deluxe, what a band.....or could have been. My mate persuaded me to go. Dagenham Roundhouse I think, can't remember the year, but it was around the second album. Bill Nelson provided the same jaw on the floor effect Joe B did the first time. He was amazing. He could have been the next great axe god 'cos he could really do it all, and his presentation and singing was, in its way, unique, I thought at the time.

But he didn't want that it seems. They had the commercial success, 'Ships in the Night' wasn't  it? and the album sold well but he was always more musician than just a guitar slinger and he went off experimenting with all sorts.

He's produced a massive body of work though over the years, although I've never bought anything. Another case of the 'road not taken' I guess, but I would expect Bill Nelson values his musical integrity more importanly than anything else. Ronnie Montrose did much the same sort of thing. You gotta respect that kind of singlemindedness. To ignore the buck and follow your principles and create what you want and not whats expected.

Re: NEW IN TOWN

dukeofc - you've certainly opened a can of worms about Bill Nelson and Be-Bop Deluxe and I appreciate the input from Andre and Hansamike.  That "Shine" song you mentioned, Andre, it's off the Live In the Air Age cd, right?  I'm thinking thats the one to get, but it's not available on iTunes.  Someone mentioned it's the equivilent to Waiting For Columbus by Little Feat.  I did get three songs off their album Sunburst Finish and will probably complete the album at a later date.  Never heard of them before the Duke's mention, but like what I'm hearing.  Bill Nelson's definitely interesting.  Thanks guys!

Re: NEW IN TOWN

Yes Curby,

It is. I can make a copy from the Live album if it is not for sale anymore.
I put the LP on Cd but you can still hear how often I played the LP because of all the scratches you hear!
But the music is great!

Re: NEW IN TOWN

Hey Curby, I didn't mean to open a can of worms but I like to share with people who I think are worthy of a mention, Joe has been added to my list now and has been mentioned several times to my music officiados as a great musician. As you mentioned Bill Nelson produced some magic albums in the early 70's,far more adventourous than other groups of that era. You mentioned one Live in the Air Age, a classic live album, Sunburst and Axe Victim. He toured America and made it bigger there than in this Country. He holds a Nelsonica every year in the locality of York and keeps in touch with his fan base on a wonderful web site "dreamsville".Visit the forum..Not many musicians have done or do what he does now. Looking forward to seeing Joe for the first time at Sheffield, I'm sure I'll come away from the gig ammmmmazed.

Re: NEW IN TOWN

Hi Curby, sorry I forgot to mention which songs I think are Be- Bop delux favourites, "shine" was mentioned from the Live in The Air Age album, problem is this is a classic live album and all the 10 numbers on it are worth 5 stars."ships in the night"did go No1.  Buy the album if you can. You mentiond downloading three from Sunburst Finish..try Crying to the Sky,,guitar riff 1/2 way through is one of the best. Life in the Air Age is on that album and Blazing Apostles. Don't get too hooked he's got the biggest discography you've ever seen !

Re: NEW IN TOWN

I did get "Crying To the Sky" and also got a live version of "Life In the Air Age".  Both those songs are very good.  I'm pretty impressed with Bill Nelson's guitar playing and his music.  Those messages by Andre and Hansamike were intriguing to say the least.  I will get that live album.  Thanks again Duke for mentioning Be-Bop Deluxe!

Can of worms or what?! Mention of Bill Nelson had me down in the cellar room and I've located my vinyl copy of Sunburst Finish whilst Axe Victim still alludes me (Its there somewhere). "Crying to the Sky" is a beautiful song long forgotten whilst I rediscovered a real old fave in "Blazing Apostles". I had forgotten how much I loved that song. Thanks for the elbow jog Duke, I shall check what he's been doing for all this time. I think I once saw there is a 'Best of' but I could be mistaken.

Duke,
Too freakin' late!  BBD gigged me like a fat bullfrog.  So far I've bought all of Sunburst Finish and Modern Music.  Both these albums are real gems.  The title song on Modern Music is one of the best examples of 70's Progressive Rock and boy were you guys right about Bill Nelson's prowess with a guitar.  Think I'm going to order the live album off Amazon and can't wait to hear it.
