Topic: Kenny Wayne Shepherd 2009-01-25 short concert review

Moscow is finally getting its share of quality blues shows it deserves. It's been a little over a month since Joe's two-night stand in Moscow, and here we are welcoming KWS Band at the same venue. Again, the venue which usually hosts classical music events is not suitable for rock gigs. Just like with Bonamassa show, the sound was rather hollow and lacked direction and punch.

KWS was brilliant. To be honest, it was not just Kenny Wayne I was eager to see live, but also Noah Hunt, who is amazing live (what a frontman!), and the legendary Chris Layton of SRV fame. Not sure how busy their touring schedule is, but the band sounded super tight.

Oddly enough, the setlist did not contain any songs from the most recent 10 Days Out cd, but rather focused on the first three LP's with a serious swing towards Trouble is...(6 songs) Fine with me, as it's my favourite KWS cd.

The complete setlist was as follows:

1. Born With A Broken Heart
2. Come On
3. I'm Leaving You (Commit A Crime)
4. Shame, Shame, Shame
5. You Should Know Better
6. (Long) Gone
7. While We Cry
~ Intermission ~
8. Trouble Is...
9. Slow Ride
10. Kings Highway
11. True Lies
12. Aberdeen
13. Blue On Black
14. Shotgun Blues
- Encore -
15. King Bee
16. Oh Well
17. Voodoo Chile

Total running time: 1h50

The ending with 10-minute plus Voodoo Chile got the audience completely ecstatic.

Anyone else seen KWS live?

Re: Kenny Wayne Shepherd 2009-01-25 short concert review

I've seen KWS more times than I can count.
No songs of 10 Days out, and no songs off of The Place Youre In. To be honest, it's going to take a new, fresh cd for me to want to see KWS play again. I've seen him upteen times since 1997, and only once or twice since '99 was the setlist any different.

No Tommy Shannon? He must still be sick, I heard he was not well.

It was Scott Nelson on the bass.

Hi Jacob. That's really good you getting to see KWS over there in Moscow. I haven't had the chance to see him live but I have all his cd's, like many here.
A few of my faves were in the set, Blue on Black, Shame, Shame, Shame and True Lies and yeah I think Noah Hunt is terrific.
Did you get any pics or video?

I made an audio recording, which I will share over this weekend on Dime.

Thats a KWS show there.  Same set for a long time.  Aberdeen is a bit of a surprise tho...never seen that one.

I thought KWS fell off the face of the earth. Man, what a shame, a guy in his prime, not making music. By the time he decides to make more music (or goes broke), people are going to say......... who??

I am a really big fan of his; however, he really has dropped of my radar

#275 JB LP

Re: Kenny Wayne Shepherd 2009-01-25 short concert review

well, he did a massive project with 10 Days Out in 2007 and according to a recent interview will release a pure blues rock record sometime this year. I'd say a regular recording / touring activity.

BTW, Trouble Is... and Aberdeen were not on the setlist I got off stage. Could be an improv.

Considering he was nominated for 2 2008 Grammy Awards—"Best Traditional Blues Album" and "Best Long Form Music Video for 'Ten Days Out', I wouldn't say KWS is falling off the radar anytime soon. He's also great on the Experience Hendrix tribute DVD released last year as well.

He REALLY should have gotten that Grammy. Taking issue with who wins the blues grammy is a yearly gripe of mine wink

Fender just came out with KWS strats, so in efforts to promote his new line of guitars, he's going to have to come up with some new music. Also ironic that his last studio album had more Les Paul recordings than ever! His loyalty was always with strats.

I'd love to hear any info on what the new cd is going to have, especially if Kenny is going to keep singing... egads!

Hi JacobK,
Dime won't allow any new users.  Are you able to post to YouTube?  I'd love to see the video.

Re: Kenny Wayne Shepherd 2009-01-25 short concert review

I saw something on youtube where Kenny said he is going into the studio in April. We shall see. But seriously, the guy's been very pretty busy actually. 10 Days Out was quite successful. He's been touring a lot. Let's see where he's going to go.
