Topic: What about Telecaster greats?

I tried to slide this in with Spider's thought provoking post about great Strat players and got no nibbles.. so I thought it deserved it's own thread.  I've really become interested in Clarence White's influence over modern Telecaster players.  I recently got an album, released last year of the Byrd's Royal Albert Hall concert in 1971.  Apparently Roger McGuinn had the tapes sitting in his garage for over thirty years.  Unbelieveable considering the quality of the recording and the playing of Clarence White.  There's an eighteen minute version of Eight Miles High that's incredible, but the whole album's great.  I highly recommend this album.

Re: What about Telecaster greats?

Specify whether current or ever?? The Strat thread was supposed to be limited to "current"

Re: What about Telecaster greats?

Sorry I wasn't specific.  Since Clarence White's been gone over 35 years this is going to be both living and dead.  Also forgot to mention other great Telecaster guitarists besides White.  They are in no particular order: James Burton, Albert Collins, Steve Cropper, Roy Buchanan, Jimmy Page and George Harrison.

Tom Petty - not the greatest on a guitar, but noted for songwriting on a Telecaster!

Re: What about Telecaster greats?

There's some interesting choices here so I am going to add one that although might not be accepted as a Telecaster great he is absolutely great with it. In fact, he is more than great whichever guitar he playing. Still, in his current set he uses a Telecaster for a number of songs to blistering effect.

Gary Moore.

Currently playing better than ever (certainly louder than ever). His latest CD is a real return to top form as other members have noted.

Sadly, for USA members there's not a chance to see him very much it seems, but trust me, he can stand shoulder to shoulder with many of the greats mentioned on this or the Strat list. He's played or recorded with most of them, and done it all, through nearly every genre of music.

But the blues is a real labour of love for him and he serves it brilliantly.

I can't wait for March when he's he in Hannover again. See him if you can

Re: What about Telecaster greats?

Amen to Gary Moore's playing.  I've been looking a clips of Clarence White, the Byrds and Gram Parsons on Youtube and there's some good stuff - notably the unique B Bender customized Telecaster made for Clarence.  Listening to his playing it's evident it greatly influenced Tom Petty.  And some of his Flatpicking Bluegrass stuff is impressive as well.

Re: What about Telecaster greats?

Jeff Beck.

Jeff Beck is the best guitar player on the planet.  If he picks up a tele, he is the best tele player, if he picks up a Les Paul, he is the best les paul player.

I'll concur on Danny Gatton. Ever.

Current: Keith Richards

Curby, I think the reason no one jumped on your telecaster hook in the other thread was maybe for the reason that we try to remain on topic. House rules.

Re: What about Telecaster greats?

Thanks Spider.  I should've known that.

Re: What about Telecaster greats?

OK Danny Gatton...Yes.  Roy Buchannan...certainly.  Although his old drummer "Byrd" a friend, still grumbles about his demise...

But I have always loved (just because) Albert BugEyed Collins.  Coco?  Debbie?  You listening?

Now because I just have to: Here's an email I sent to my brother's band who I sometimes play with.

"One of the finest guitar players I know, Mr. Greg Koch". Those were Joe's words while introducing Greg to join him for the encores at Shank Hall December 10, 2006. So I'd have to agree with Joe and say Greg Koch.

Albert Collins, Roy Buchanen and Steve Cropper.

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.
