Re: Les Paul(s)

1991 Les Paul Studio I have had my ups and downs with this guy. It started life as a black studio with gold trim, but the person before me stripped the finish and put a light stain on it. It looks real nice. I traded an american strait for it and a little cash, in the end a bit of a bad deal. I found out years later the neck was cracked and one night after a gig it was cracked for a second time. But surprisingly after I had the second break fixed it played better. I also had a refret and have changed the picks ups to an Alnico II in the neck and a Pearly Gates in the Bridge. I have been thinking of changing out the PG to either another Alnico or a 59. I have rewired the guitar twice. Its a heavy LP and I love the ebony fret board but I wish it had a slimmer neck on it. Its also a very dark sounding LP.

On a side note I have a 76 Ibanez lawsuit LP Custom the best playing guitar I own. I say playing because the neck is perfect for me. If I could get a guitar custom built LP I would hamd them that guitar. The bad the pups needed Potting and the bridge pup died so I only have one super 70's pup on it which I like. Much different sounding guitar much brighter and lighter guitar doesn't have the sustain like the Studio and it tends to feed back when using higher gain. Its been my number two for years since I got the studio.

The Les Paul I really want is a white or black late 70's or early 80's Custom, I know these where not known to be great LP but I played a couple and love them.

Re: Les Paul(s)

Well I may have gotten bitten by the les paul bug again...  I tried my buddies Epiphone Elitist Les Paul (According to him the Epiphone Elitist series is on par with the lower Gibsons) and it is awesome!  I didn't used to like the fat necks but now I like it more.  Theres only a couple issues I can't get over... The price for a Gibson (I wouldn't be able to afford one for.. a while), and the severe limitation of the body when playing above the 14th fret.

I really want a les paul, but for the money, I have trouble justifying it over a custom made to my spec Carvin for half the price or less.  I could get one with practically a 5A quilt top plus any body/neck wood for $1500, swap in burstbuckers (never tried them but have heard their praises on here) or the Seymour Duncans that I prefer and still be at only $1700.  Someday, Gibson... Someday...

Of course it doesn't help that the les paul that I like the most is one of the most expensive new ones... roll

In that firemist color.... just wow.

Re: Les Paul(s)

Thanks for all the great responses. LP's are expensive, but there is something about them. I have a few Fenders, including an American Made Strat that I like allot, however, the Paul keeps bringing me back (that and the ES-335)

Hi,

I also have a '58 RI with butterscotch flametop. I heard they are pretty seldom. Mine is from 1998. Really a resonant LP and a leightweight. The neck is a tad slimmer than on my '57 Goldtop.
What treblecaps have you used for the vol. pots? Which value?
I thibk about to try this too.

Thanks
Alex

0.001 Mf cap and 150 k resistor.  My tech. did this for me.  I like it but it sometimes seems a bit too bright...I compensate by running the tone control on the bass side.  I'd like to side-by-side test this against '50's wiring.

Alright lads, you know I'm not going to believe any of this without pictures...come on now, let's not hold out.

Mine's an '05 Light Burst Standard. I just got her back from the shop after a neck break...not good.

Mods:Historic Rings, drilled out ABR-1, Lightweight Tailpiece, knob pointers, chrome jack plate, RS Guitarworks Electronics Kit, 50's mod, Orange switch tip, and I recently swapped the Klusons with Grovers 18:1 Nickel.

The OBLIGATORY pictures...

Re: Les Paul(s)

My Les Paul is a 2007 58 reissue. Gloss Ice Tea finish Plaintop.

She sings like an angel, purrs like a kitten, roars like a lion.
She is like an extension of my soul.  The wood and metal somehow make me play better.
It is the only thing I own that my wife is jealous of.

There is magic in a guitar that you love. I dont care if its a strat or tele or lester or whatever. My soul connects with my guitar. I love that Les Paul. Its maybe worth 3000.  I wouldnt sell it right now for 6000.  I have yet to play another that feels right.

And its not that I have the best reissue ever built. It's probably no different than most of Joe's  or your's.

I just connected with this guitar unlike any other I've found yet. Its amazing the craftsmanship.

That is why I love guitars.
