Topic: Joe - Your Gold Sparkle Strat

Joe
In another thread I mentioned that Fenders builder Greg Fessler built those gold sparkle strats from a gold sparkle strat he saw Yakushiko Iwanabe’s vintage book: The Galaxy of Strats. Here's a pic from that book showing an original 1964 Stratocaster Serial #L46876 with a special order custom color gold sparkle. While it does resemble your guitar it's clear that it's not your "Goldy".

It doesn't appear, at least to me, that there was any intent to copy your strat. I hope this helps to put it all to rest.

Re: Joe - Your Gold Sparkle Strat

No means no....lol... I don't think there's any change of mind in the works. Beautiful guitar though, just not what J.B. chooses to use. I can imagine how hard this is for Fender loyalists. I think I'd feel the same way if he abandoned Gibsons.       Cathy

Re: Joe - Your Gold Sparkle Strat

I would only feel bad if he decided to play baldwin pianos in his shows instead of Fender or Gibson guitars. wink

I don't know about how the guitar in this photo compares to Joe's or the custom shop one in question but I am glad to see the photo because it had been widely sought after and not easy to find.

Actually Jane the custom shop is, at least to me, very close to the 64 in the photo.

When I learned that Fessler used the gold sparkle strat in the book "Galaxy of Strats" as his "inspiration" for the custom shop gold sparkle strat I went on the hunt to find a copy of the book or a copy of the photo. The book was a limited issue and is sold out. And as far as I could find, until recently, there wasn't a picture of the 64 gold sparkle circulating the web. I stumbled across this photo while searching on ebay. I thought it was worth passing along to Joe and the forum so that the question of the origin of the custom shop gold sparkle strat would finally be answered.

Now it can be put to rest.

Re: Joe - Your Gold Sparkle Strat

Spider I found a picture of it that was also on a Fender calendar, I believe it was called the Fender Custom Shop Galaxy, etc. also. I saw this years before the "situation" came up.  When it came up, I originally posted a rhetorical question regarding the preexistance of "it" (prior to the bruhaha, trying to offer an air of inference that perhaps there was confusion-I know I was slightly confused!) the very first time this subject was broached.  Apparently that post has been yanked because I can't seem to find it. IF all we have is a misunderstanding, it would seem inappropriate to disdainfully trash Fenders whilst promoting Gibsons with total, gleeful satisfaction, when all that perhaps is needed is a statement of presonal prefernce rather than personal vendetta. I mean NO disrespect to Joe, and be informed I do NOT know the facts, only that I recall seeing that calendar photo and originally thinking "It's Joe's Goldie"! with great excitement, whereupon further look, it was just very similar.  I know Joe had remarked about the scratches and something else being close or exact.  What Joe saw or whether in person I cannot / have not found out yet, letting things alone. It would be good to know if an actual guitar could be in hand to render a final verdict.  If Joe had guitar in hand and his assessment was an exact rip-off with no credit, his anger is absolutely more than justified.  I just haven't swung the gavel on this yet. I almost have the feeling & sometimes think some people would trash Gibsons tomorrow if Joe did for ANY reason without "needing" facts.  That's fandom I know, but also blind.   Joe called Goldie a piece of uhm...,but I can never forget him playing that Red Gibson 445 (donated) or Goldie (loaned or donated to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame), he was incredible on them!!!!!!!

No need to get angry.  I LOVE the Signature, now wanting one AND Goldie too!

Anyone want to Email anything regarding this, I welcome you to please do so.

Rocke

Re: Joe - Your Gold Sparkle Strat

Joe can play whatever he wants, and he'll still sound amazing. Now, instead of joining the greats Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Rory Gallagher, and Jeff Beck in preferring Stratocasters, he's joining the greats Jimmy Page, Billy F. Gibbons, Duane Allman, and Peter Green in preferring Les Pauls, not to mention being inspired by Jeff Beck's and Clapton's early work in which they used Les Pauls or other Gibson models. Both are great guitars (I just wish I could afford a Les Paul) it's just which you prefer. I kinda wish we could put this to rest, but oh well.

Hi Spider, below is from Joe....
most interesting, the "Believe it or not the gold strat didnt make it.    Fender is making a replica of it now in the Custom Shop.. It looks exactly like it  without the girl sticker on it..    "

besides this, my beef is it would have been so easy to make it a Joe B sig
and Fender knows who Joe is, he used to have a Fender endorsement
Joe's path wrote the whole marketing story for Fender...
Father owns guitar store.....
Assembles guitar from vintage 65 strat ....

You Know, funny you should ask but lately I have been toying with the idea of auctioning one a year and donating the money to the blues in the schools. There is a cost involved that I hate the school having to bear. So to start a fund that subsidizes the blues foundations efforts would be cool.   I have many guitars, and I have been collecting for many years.  Each guitar has a story and a experience to go with it.  Kinda like my Photo album so to speak. With that said my collection is bordering on "Hundreds" of guitars. I think they will eventually  deserve a better home than a closet or storage room.  We just did a photo shoot with my friend Rick Gould for Vintage guitar magizine.  We did  30 guitars  in my collection. I picked em at radom from the different categories.  I hope you enjoy the upcoming article and "hopefully" cover.  Believe it or not the gold strat didnt make it.    Fender is making a replica of it now in the Custom Shop.. It looks exactly like it  without the girl sticker on it..    anyway I dont think that answered your question but just a thought, I am not ready to part with one of the Kids yet...
