I've posted this before, though in a slightly different context - I only ever walked out once, and it wasn't even the band's fault.

'My' legendary Little Feat experience at the Rainbow in London in 1975 - the Feat were only the openers for the Doobies, but the entire Feat freak audience was so blown away that people started standing up and walking out when the Doobies started to play. My group lasted three numbers or so before we gave it up. The music did nothing for us and we were totally drained, so we got up and walked out as did hundreds more. It wasn't in any sense the Doobies fault, they were just unbelievably unlucky to have been dropped into such a bizarre situation by Warner and his brothers.

Actually G Dawg The Doobs, Feat, as well as Tower Of Power were all Warners artists back then and were packaged together on tours quite often as well as interacting with one another in the studio. I would have jumped at the chance to see those two on the same bill. One of the best line ups I saw with the Doobies was in SF with Steely Dan(opener), The Doobies, and Steve Miller headlining with Tommy Johnston sittin' in with Steve for a few songs. Billy Payne can be heard on keyboards on The Doob's albums Toulouse St., The Captain & Me, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, Stampede, & Cycles and probably some others I missed too.

Off topic but I think that there has to be some credentials or licensure involved with being a sound tech.  (I'm trying to be funny with the license - but you get my point.) As we all know, not everyone can do it.  And very few can do it well.

Reminds me of a joke.
What is the difference between a soundman and a soundengineer?
The sound man has never heard of Ohm's law. The soundengineer has.

Re: Ever Walked Out Of A Concert ? And Why?

Back on topic now.
The Black Crows. The worst sounding band in the worst sounding room. I stood for 90 minutes at least hoping to catch a glimpse of Kate Hudson but that is all I could stand.

Re: Ever Walked Out Of A Concert ? And Why?

I had free tickets to the Blackcrows and that wasn't what made the decision to leave easy. Within a half hour I was bored to tears! The thing is they looked like they were too. After about 45 minutes I just headed for the door. It sorta looked like the end of the show by the amount of people driving  out of the parking lot. There were also a couple shows during my high school years that I don't remember leaving early. Not the fault of the acts.......me being young and stupid!! (DAMN RUMPLEMINTZ)

Molly Hatchet back in early 90's. Danny Joe Brown had just returned to the band and he should have stayed away........he couldnt sing worth a s**t (but he sure could smoke, go figure).....rest his soul.

Re: Ever Walked Out Of A Concert ? And Why?

Sammy Hagar back in 2003.... his show was more about drinking and he got so drunk he couldn't even play well. Really went to see Lynyrd Skynyrd, glad they went on before Sammy.

Re: Ever Walked Out Of A Concert ? And Why?

Once. Back in 1981, I went to see Head East (Of "Never Been Any Reason" fame), who were backed by guitarist (and more on again than off again Hendrix impersonator) Randy Hansen. Hansen was touring in support of his self titled album (highly recommended by the way, albeit never officially released on CD to this day), and was fantastic, pulling out all the stops - then Head East came on, and they had vocalist John Schlitt's vocals turned up so high in the mix to the point where they were actually painfully PIERCING, which is something I'd never heard before, nor since, and hope never to again. After enduring 5 songs, hoping without hope that some wise soundman would realize the error of their ways, that was it for me, and several friends. Ever since I can never listen to any of their songs lest I be reminded of what many years of high volume, even high pitched guitar notes had failed to do, almost make my eardrums explode.

Dicky Betts..Tampa Bay Blues Fest 2006..headliner for Sat. night. He was smashed..kept yelling at the soundman..but the problem was his hands wouldn't work, he slurred his speech...people left like a stampede. I have to admit to falling asleep at a Chicago concert back in the '70's..lots of reasons for that.       Cathy

ACDC...many years ago @ The Royal Oak Music Theater....so loud it rattled our drinks off the table.

Joe Perry Project...Harpo's....again probably the loudest concert i ever had the pleasure of leaving.
it actually sounded better outside the venue, where it was still too loud.

Buddy Guy...Emerald Theater (Mt. Clemens Mich.)  The Emerald had just updated their sound system & Buddy's sound guy was clueless as to how to run the board. Obviously they had no soundcheck.
it was almost laughable.  you could see the drummer hitting the skins but you could not hear anything but Buddys Strat at about 150 decibels....finally after about 5 songs...Buddys sound guy just up & left the board & the house sound tech from the Emerald took over & had it sounding great within 2 songs, but by then 1/2 the crowd had left.

I too walked out of a Johnny Lang show in New Haven, CT a few years back..Indigenous opened and then Johnny Lang came on and it was just too poppish for me.  Indigenous was awesome, though.

Re: Ever Walked Out Of A Concert ? And Why?

Never walked out on a show but hat the lead guitar player from the Outfield walk out 1/4 the way through the show at the Cleveland Agora back in '88. Never found out why but there were allot of unhappy fans.

How about band walking out on audience. Buddy Guy about 3 years ago at Legends in Chicago. Buddy was drunk and kept doing his schtick where he imitates other people. Someone in the audience yelled play some Buddy Guy. Buddy's response was "#### You I am Buddy Guy."

He did Damn Right I got the Blues and walked off stage to the bar. End of show.

Never walked out, but your story about Buddy Guy reminded me of a couple concerts where, if not for the opening act, I would have considered my time and money wasted.

Back in '05, went to see Buddy Guy at some winery near San Jose. He kept joking how he was hitting the wine before the show. Sad. If it weren't for his opening act, Eric Johnson, the night would have been a total waste! If anyone gets a chance to see Eric Johnson, DO IT!!! SUPERB show.

Back in '91, BTO opened for John Kay and Steppenwolf. Steppenwolf was a joke. They played a couple songs before announcing they were having technical difficulties and that we as fans deserved to have them resolved if we were to enjoy the show the way it should be. So... I guess we deserved to sit through a 45 minute break then coming back out to play two more songs. Good thing BTO was so good. They totally made up for Steppenwolf's lameness. BTO is about one of the tightest bands I have ever heard.

Joe Bonamassa Belfast 2008 its the one and only concert i have ever walk out on.  My wife told me during Sloe Gin she was pregnant and wasnt feeling well so i had no alternative but to leave.  Ah well maybe he'll come back to a bigger venue in Belfast someday.

Good man.

It takes a dedicated man to walk out of a show like Joe's because his wife isn't feeling well.

Seriously, I respect that.
