Topic: Ever Walked Out Of A Concert ? And Why?

Bournemouth Winter Gardens U.K. circa 1973

Groundhogs - TOO LOUD. WAY TOO LOUD

They were so loud I could not hear the 'music' at all - total distortion - the floor/walls/my seat were vibrating violently. After the 4th number started at the same levels I walked.

My hearing was affected for a couple of days.

It WAS worth going though - the support act had been The Doctors Of Madness - Kid Strange and Co - all art school electric violin on loop delay and some early punk influence - they played all of 'Late Night Movies All Night Brainstorms' - hmm, nice! as Bob Harris would have said in those days.

Re: Ever Walked Out Of A Concert ? And Why?

Jan./Feb. 1975 My best friends girlfriend treated about eight of us to one of Bill Graham's local talent nights at Winterland in SF for his birthday. Two or three actual local Bay Area acts played and then a band we'd never heard of named Kiss played a set to close out the evening. We stayed for a couple songs out of shock value as they were visually engrossing, like witnessing a train wreck, but there was nothing about the music to keep us from heading for the doors. To this day there's nothing about them but the schtick IMO, but obviously it sells, kinda like how the Enquirer sells papers, shock value with lack of substance.

Re: Ever Walked Out Of A Concert ? And Why?

A friend and I walked out on Bad Company...the only time I ever left a show early.
Kansas had opened up and was awesome. Bad Co. came out and played three or four songs and sounded awful!
Not sure if it was the sound system or what, but we both decided to chuck it.

I was at a Blue Oyster Cult show at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago.
I had made plans with two buddies weeks before and right before the show they decided to take their girlfriends.
Well I guess they didn't want me feeling like a 5th wheel, so they set me up on a blind date with one of their girlfriends' friends.
After a half dozen songs, they lean over to me and say "let's go, we're leaving".
It took about 5 seconds for me to say "I'm not going anywhere"! (she was really cute, which caused the hesitation).
So the 5 of them left and I found my own way home after the show. Never did see her again...she must have  thought I was a jerk, but I just really liked BOC.

Johnny Lang this year.  I discovered he needs the studio. About three dozen other people that I saw must have thought the same thing.  On the other hand Joe's shows don't last long enough for me. I have never seen anyone walk out on a concert yet.

I saw people leaving before Joe went on in the foothills of Calif this year....Joe was the headliner, going on right after Tommy Castro....me and Jdawg are asking people where they were going....the people left without ever seeing this musician they probably knew nothing about...then again, the drive down them windy mountainous roads at night can be frightening with a few beverages in you...I'd say half the people left, there were maybe 1000 left....I'm not real sure, I got up front like always, trampelling anyone in my way smile

I walked out of a Walter Trout gig last November... But not because I was not enjoying it, on the contrary he was great, but I had public transport to catch. I did not make the same mistake this year when I saw him.

I also left Robin Trower's gig early in April this year, after about an hour. We'd gone primarily to see the support act Aynsley Lister. Was a good move as we met Aynsley and his band loading up the bus outside the venue smile

Shred, you forgot to mention that most of those people had some years on us and they'd been there for over ten hrs. in 90+ heat all day. Also the few I spoke to were of the "purist" persuasion anyways. Screw them "purists", see it made it easier for you to crash the stage. Doug, Mary, & I played it smart and rolled in after 1:00 when things started heatin' up. Doug was touch'n'go for the first few hours, but he toughed it out.

I actually walked out on Liz Phair at the House of Blues on Sunset..  I was there on a invite from a friend.  It was like watching someone who never preformed play songs she barely knew.   It was a shame.  I felt bad for her and her band.. They had to know.  right..

I hear ya' L2F, I saw him in Aug. 2001 and I was fighting off sleep half way through the show. His studio work definitely outshines his stage show. I had both my kids with me and got no argument from anybody about leaving before the encore.

Re: Ever Walked Out Of A Concert ? And Why?

Never walked out of a show... but I have confronted a very very bad sound man before.  He was too drunk to know what he was doing and didn't change a thing.  But I mustered enough energy to stay for the entire show because I liked the musicians so much.

Off topic but I think that there has to be some credentials or licensure involved with being a sound tech.  (I'm trying to be funny with the license - but you get my point.) As we all know, not everyone can do it.  And very few can do it well.

Re: Ever Walked Out Of A Concert ? And Why?

I've posted this before, though in a slightly different context - I only ever walked out once, and it wasn't even the band's fault.

'My' legendary Little Feat experience at the Rainbow in London in 1975 - the Feat were only the openers for the Doobies, but the entire Feat freak audience was so blown away that people started standing up and walking out when the Doobies started to play. My group lasted three numbers or so before we gave it up. The music did nothing for us and we were totally drained, so we got up and walked out as did hundreds more. It wasn't in any sense the Doobies fault, they were just unbelievably unlucky to have been dropped into such a bizarre situation by Warner and his brothers.

Re: Ever Walked Out Of A Concert ? And Why?

Boston at the Milwaukee Arena about 1978 (Don't Look Back Tour). Me and a buddy went to see the opening band Sammy Hagar (touring in support of his 1st live album All Night Long) and left during Bostons organ solo (boring).

Judas Priest and the Hounds at the Uptown Theater in Milwaukee '79 or '80. Priest had come out with Unleashed in the East and had seen them a month earlier opening for KISS on the Dynasty tour. Had 5th row seats and Priest was so loud that I thought my dates head was going to explode.

How about band walking out on audience. Buddy Guy about 3 years ago at Legends in Chicago. Buddy was drunk and kept doing his schtick where he imitates other people. Someone in the audience yelled play some Buddy Guy. Buddy's response was "#### You I am Buddy Guy."

He did Damn Right I got the Blues and walked off stage to the bar. End of show.

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.
