Topic: Walter Trout

Off to see Walter Trout.... I'll post back with a review and maybe some pictures! Been looking forward to this show for a longtime.

Re: Walter Trout

Walter is a lot of fun, lots of blazing guitar, and showmanship.

Re: Walter Trout

He does put on a great show, doesn't he??

I saw him last year at the Pittsburgh Blues Festival, and it was either the 20th anniverary of his being clean and sober, or within days of it.....can't remember which.  But he was in RARE form that night.....

He's playin' O'Malley's in Youngstown on 8/1, then here at Moondog's on 8/3.

I'm thinkin' of doin' both.....I can sleep on Saturday.....

Re: Walter Trout

SRV  you are just a music machine......See you at the MOON-DOG'S

Yes-Walter was great at Hartwood Acres...too bad the line up stinks out there this year...: (

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

Re: Walter Trout

I'll be seeing Walter Friday night!! But, don't skip PBF! "My" band, Nothin But Trouble, gets 1 hr on the main stage before Taj Mahal! Come and root them on and say Hi to me! Cathy

Re: Walter Trout

Got to see Walter at a local blues fest here in Saint John, New Brunswick Canada on the 11th of July. Got to meet the man before he went on that night and all I can say is, he is a class act on and off the stage. His latest CD The Outsider speaks for itself on his guitar, vocal and songwriting abilities. He is one of my favorite musicians and one of the best at what he does.

I'm planning on seeing him again next month at:

Should be a great time with the talent showing up there.

Cheers everyone

Seems only right to give this another airing tonight as Cathy and Bob Tarus52 are in Delaware watching Walter in what Cathy describes as 'a small bar' - though I suppose by US standards that could mean anything. big_smile

Re: Walter Trout

Amsterhammer ... that youtube video gives me gooseflesh everytime I watch it. Man, I always wonder why I could not have been born with just a touch of that kind of talent. These guys have their own style but they are definitely two of the best this planet has to offer.

johnb64 - I could not agree more. He gets better at each performance.

SRV - we speak the same lingo man. LOL.  I gotta check out that young lad Jimmy Bowskill
at that bluesfest. Unique name for a young axe grinder ... bow skill eh? It should be a
great time. I'm gonna try and get a bit of video of each performer if they don't
enforce the video/picture thing too much.

I'm gonna have a hoot at that concert. Bonnie and Mr. Cotton should be a thrill. Man
that guy can make a harp come alive just by looking at it.

Jeez, this is a great place. It is great to get other peoples opinions on what they like and why. Sure seems to be a bit of music knowledge on these forums. Maybe I can learn something if I can get peoples ideas to penetrate this thick skull of mine. LOL.

Cheers everyone

Re: Walter Trout

WHAT A GREAT SHOW!! Friday evening, sponsored by the Diamond Stae Blues Society at a relatively small bar..maybe 150 people at most...The show started with Johnny DeFrancesco, a recent vet from the Gulf War. The boy could PLAY! He had a lovely custom Guild and got everyone warmed up for sure!

Next, Walter's 3 sons took the stage. The eldest (16?) on lead guitar, middle(13?) on drums and the youngest (6) on "mic"(which means he kinda sang..too cute). The eldest announced "This is NOT a blues song" and let rip...They were good and I couldn't help but think about the day, in the future, when he goes home excited about some great song he heard, only to be told it's a blues song..lol..

And then came WALTER, if you've seen him, you know what I mean. Full on attack with lots of humor! I gave his son my camera to take pics for me and he did a great job! It's a new camera and the "kids" figured out how to make a movie too! (Show offs!) Bob was with me and will post song titles and specifics. But, all I know is there was no break, no slow down, just a wild ride to the end! And he's another fan friendly guy. Loving the new CD.   Cathy

Re: Walter Trout

Sounds great. I was pleased to find out Walter Trout will be playing Edinburgh in October, so will be good to see him again, without the travelling this time, and also he is supported by the Oli Brown band, who are an excellent young group.

Re: Walter Trout

Greenose, glad to see Walter's going up to your neck of the woods on this tour. I'm hoping to see him (again) in London on the 17th as the last UK date. The first time I saw him a few years ago he was supported by Aynsley Lister (excellent and more on him some other time) then Canned Heat (ok, but Harvey Mandell's playing was so mechanical it was painful), then Walter came on and wow I was, as they say, blown away. cool

Cathy, I'm looking forward to hearing about the set and how long he played for. Thanks. smile

Re: Walter Trout

Yes, I saw him In Glasgow last year. He's played the Ferry there 8 times in the last 8 years! This time he's doing Edinburgh too, so I can enjoy a drink while I see him play as I won't have to drive! The venue is brand new aswell

Will get to see Oli Brown too who is supporting, which is also great. Wish Joe would play Edinburgh too one day! Joe check out this website:

Interesting to read Wooders that Canned Heat supported Walter, as he used to play with them of course. He is the bigger artist now, that's for sure! Lister is great too, far superior to Robin Trower whom he supported recently.

Re: Walter Trout

What's happened to Joey Pafumi? Does Walter have a new drummer?

Tripsy smile

Re: Walter Trout

Michael Leasure is a great drummer. I enjoyed his playing at Mexicali Blues - he did a great solo.

Here are a few pictures from when I saw Walter on 7/14/08 @ Mexicali Blues:

If Walter is in your area - This is a must see show! I was lucky enough to be dead center, about 3 feet away from Walter. No one was standing up in the front. Great show.....

Re: Walter Trout

I remember watching Joey Pafumi when I saw Walter Trout last year. He was always flicking one of his drum sticks in the air and catching it again. It became quite additive watching him to see if he would drop it. He did eventually - maybe that's why he was fired!
The statement he did leave said "Joey and the Radicals have had an amicable split, realizing creative differences had come between them in recent years"

Michael Leasure looks a powerhouse drummer and seems like he could be good for Walter.

Re: Walter Trout

Yep, he was showing off the last time I saw him, too although I can't remember whether he dropped any sticks – it was two or three years ago now.

I somehow missed the release of Walter’s latest album, Outsider, but received it from Amazon yesterday. Looking forward to hearing it at the weekend. smile What does everyone think of it? The reviews on Amazon.co.uk were all positive, but there were only three.

A couple of items I’ve picked up while browsing car boot sales and second hand music stores are the John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers live CD that was part of the Blues Collection magazine sold in the UK and the DVD of the Bluesbreakers at Iowa University. Both feature Walter in absolutely blistering form (as always) and Coco Montoya, who in the DVD seems to have been relegated to somewhere offstage big_smile  I managed to find a new sealed copy of the DVD for £6, a bargain as it’s quoted at £12.99 on the link below.

Roy, it sounds like Walter was really on form. I hope he’s still got some left by the time he gets to the UK. I’m looking forward to your full review when you have time.
