Topic: American Football versus Rugby Football

OK, so as not to hijack Eva's thread on the European Football (Soccer) Championships, I have started a fresh thread where we can debate the merits of US Football and Rugby. For the start of this discussion please see below link.

I have often had the same thought as gsj re padding and agree wholeheartedly with his sentiments. Have our US cousins actually seen a game of rugby? I suspect not. If you haven't, check out the youtube link to see what we mean. Admittedly, the NFL players are generally bigger (as most things are in the US), but there's plenty of rough and tumble here.

What did the teams wear before all the protective clothing was brought in? Surely they haven't been wearing all that clobber since the game was invented. Mind you, if they didn't wear those helmets I don't suppose they'd use their heads as battering rams. smile

God help us if Health and Safety force the rugby players in the UK to pad up and wear helmets. Great joke for an April fool's spoof next year - lol big_smile

Thanks Phil for rescuing my poor little soccer thread!! smile

I also never understood what´s the big difference between Rugby and Football, but I guess I shouldn´t have said that now, because some American Football fan will kill me for that lol ...

That depends on whether you are talking about Football under FIFA rules, as in soccer, or Football, as in NFL football. Just to confuse you even more, Rugby is also called rugby football. big_smile

seeing the state a lot of nfl players are in by the time they hit forty, basically crippled broken down and praying for death, i think it is astonishing to see people call them sissies because they arent playing rugby.  bottom line is one sport has better entertainment value but some people in europe choose to make the decision based on the amount of padding.  whatever works for you i guess.

Re: American Football versus Rugby Football

I must admit, I'm not a fan of rugby. Not wishing to offend anyone in here who plays or is a fan, but I have always found it to be an elitist sport, mainly played by and for the middle/upper classes, and only taught/practised in more "well to do schools". For that reason, plus the sight of grown men beating each other up, kneeling on faces etc., to get the ball, and then have to throw it backwards, whilst still moving forwards (I know you do in American football too, but not all the time, just to clarify that I am aware of the rules! smile ), just never appealed to me. Just a working class boy's opinion!

Having lived in the US for several years, and attending college, I did go to a number of college football games, and it just seemed more accessible to me, and it was more of an event, attracting people from all walks of life. Granted I had a keen interest with me going to the college as well, but to me it's just......better!! I just can't and never will imagine me and my family getting together, having a barbeque, and watching a game of rugby. S'not gonna happen!!

Incidentally, i did play a few games of American football (with zero padding) with some friends while I was over there, a couple of which played for their local high schools, and whilst I was laying on the floor, winded and bleeding for what seemed like an eternity (with ball in hand), I thought to myself....now this is good fun!!! smile

Re: American Football versus Rugby Football

I watched the entire youtube Rugby clip.....if i had a wish, I would love to see some american football payers take off their pads and helmets and play the game the way rugby players do...I personally love to see the agony in someone face after being hit good.....thats just the physical side of sports that all men crave....I've never seen a rugby game, but I know they have a league here in Sacramento, going to have to see for my self.....hey!!...there both great, so whatever tickles your fancy smile

Re: American Football versus Rugby Football

I've never been to a live rugby match, but have seen them on TV.
I get my chance to see live matches when the Barclays Churchill Cup comes to the Chicago area on June 21st:
