Re: Should I spend ....

No, it is the same. Why? Supply and demand. Gas prices are going up because we're not driving less. This is called being price inelastic because no matter what you're doing to the price, the demand is still the same. That's just starting to change though. People are starting to drive less, or are buying more fuel-efficient cars. All of this "people need gas" is somewhat true, but you can still make adjustments. You can carpool. You can get a friggin' bike. You can go get a hybrid or a more fuel-efficient car. There are ALWAYS ways to get around something. Nobody is a slave to anything. When gas went up big in the 70s, people got around that by going to Toyota, who at the time was very much a small Japanese car company.

So, yes, again it goes back to supply and demand. We're demanding the same amount no matter what they charge, instead of giving up that gas-guzzling SUV, or travelling shorter lengths for holidays. Sometimes you've just gotta bite the bullet.

The point is the same thing. These artists can charge what they want to, and the public keeps on buying. Compared to a lot of artists who are just as big, Clapton's are reasonable. Again, you can rail against them all you want, but until the whole public decides that it's not worth it, LIKE GAS, it will keep going up. And here's the thing: there will always be a huge market for a Clapton or Eagles.

I suggest you go back and read jim's post.

Not just left handed, but dyslexic left handed, high E on top as is Coco Montoya and I believe Albert King was too. These guys picked up a righty's axe and just turned it upside down and figured it out. It's absolutely nuts trying to play along with these types, just listen, don't look.

There is more to economics than supply and demand.  I'll e-mail you about the gas prices.  The commodities market and other factors are a totally different animal than concert prices.

Of course I read the part of Jim's post you included.   And he gave a big part of the equation.
You also gave a part in "they can charge what they want to".
Not what they have to, but what(the key word) they want to.

In my example, if Garth Brooks wanted to, he could have charged double and sold out.  But he didn't.  And it was his fans that can't afford high ticket prices that benefitted.  If the tickets weren't as fan-friendly as they were, you wouldn't have seen whole families there.  The whole show was better for it for the environment it created.  I'll tell you Garth fans loved him even more because of what he did.

Only a few years ago I saw Tesla and The Scorps for $45 and they were good seats.  Two headliners and one of the best shows for me because they are 2 of my favorites and there was not 1 song played that I didn't love from the both of them.

But see, while you are right about they can charge what they want and people will pay it, the problem is you have their fans that can't afford it.  Their fans that would love to go see them but may never get the chance.

Deezer, be happy that all concerts don't cost $100.
How many shows could you really attend at that cost?

Re: Should I spend ....

River Cat-that is great what Garth did, I like that concept of bringing the whole family and keeping the prices down.  I never bought any of his music or saw him perform.  ^-^

Both of these issues are supply and demand related, BUT the gas prices cut way deeper and in different directions, its more of an apples vs. oranges conversation...not really exactly the same, but conceptually similar. IMHO

I know Libby had mentioned before about starting a thread about concert prices, I think I'm heading there right now, but want to leave this link of Clapton clips.

And Eva, I'm a little partial to this song, from a different time...either way still makes me melt...SO MUCH...when you know, yes you know...sing it to me Eric...it is a damn shame and a sin...

That's the thing though, for me, it's not how many. I choose about two shows a year to go to. I'm not trying to go to a show once a month. It's about one, maybe two. I did three last year because they were all really close to where I live during school (Johnny Winter, ZZ top, Robert Randolph). The point is, the market dictates the prices. The point is, there is a market, so they will charge. Not that big of a deal. The thing is, very few bands past these few that are getting older (Clapton, Eagles, Stones) are big enough to charge those prices anyway, so it may be a moot point in 20 years.

No thanks on the gas price reading material. I did enough research on gas prices and the failure of the auto industry last semester to make my head explode.

So, I'm wrong then....damn...I thought I had a really good night out as well!!!! How come nobody told me that my money wasn't well spent? I thought we had a good time.....just goes to show that when you think all is well the reality isn't quite what you think. I'll tell my wife that we actually didn't enjoy the gig and that we were mistaken....she'll be so upset to know that she didn't have a good time.....I'll tell her that nobody else did....it'll make her feel better.

I didn't say you and your wife didn't have a good time.  I saw the Eagles way back when and I can tell you the updated concert I saw, they phoned it in.  Joe Walsh was the only one who didn't. For those prices they need to make it a show, instead of just sitting there and playing there instruments. Good lord, it was so bad that during the intermission, if they had done the 2nd half like they did the first half, I was gonna leave early. You know what, it's better to buy there DVD than go their show. BelYou'd save alot of money and can enjoy it anytime you want. They do nothing special with the show or with there songs. You could at least put some of that money in for a more creative show. Now if you want to pay those high prices and think its worth it, I'm glad you had a good time.  But for me no music act is worth those high prices.  I can spend that kind of money on things I need. That kind of money for me, not for them.  I enjoy alot more acts that put everything they have for way less than the Eagles. So i'll support those acts.  You can support the Eagles.

EVA!  My brother Bob called me from Mass.  He went to see Clapton night before last and almost gushed...We just don't do that.

He said It was like watching a Pro Team take the field and just lay waste to the entire stadium.  EC has no ego.  He let Doyle and Chris just play and play and play while he stood around and grinned with his hands in his pockets like he was being vanquished AND THEN..he let everybody see that the old lion still has the fire of the gods.  He scorched the stage and the people trembled.

All the old guitar players in the crowd just wept and bowed and scraped.

Wish I had been there.  I hate him.  lol

Oh wow, that sounds like I definitely have to go!

But now I´ve got a new problem: NO ONE is coming with me, because NO ONE else is willing to pay the ticket prizes!! I´ll have to ask Florian - he´s the only Bonabuddy who lives near Munich too ... or I´ll just go alone - hmpf!
