Topic: Beautiful Back Door Slam song 'Stay'

A couple of weeks ago Jeff sent me some Back Door Slam live shows and I gotta say its the most exiting new band ive heard in a long time. The Steamboat Springs , Co. show is incredible and a great sounding recording as well. Been playing it over and over almost
constantly since I got it, which is something I havnt done in years. Had to have more ,went searching and got a copy of the 7-19-2007 Kansas City show. Another great show!  About 5 songs in, Davey announces that the next song 'Stay' was written for a couple of friends who had passed away and then proceeds to play accoustic guitar that I believe has a bit of Celtic folk influence to it, wonderfully different and incredibly beautiful.
I dont usually pay much notice to drum work but this was something special, just perfect
controlled cymbal swells to create the right feel followed by spot on exactly right for each moment drumming to build the emotion of this song, And then comes Davey's vocal work that flat out stopped me in my tracks, the word steller isnt enough to describe this, breathtaking might be better. What a beautiful song for their lost friends.
Gotta be one of the best things ive heard in half my life !

I agree whole heartedly Bob. One of the two was the fourth member/other guitar player in the band.

That's probably my favourite song on the album, love how it builds up. It also makes a lot more sense now I know the meaning behind it. Lovely, poignant song!

"Music should strike fire from the heart of man, and bring tears from the eyes of woman."

Yes its a great song, Jeff sent me that recording too. Here is a quote about the origin of the song:

"Stay" addresses a more serious subject: the death of Back Door Slam's rhythm guitarist, Brian Garvey, and another friend, in a car accident in 2004. "It just devastated us," Knowles recalls. "It took a long time to come to terms with that. Writing 'Stay' was a kind of therapy for us."

"The recently formed Edinburgh Blues Club has identified an appetite for the personal communication between musicians and audience that the blues long ago perfected." The Herald Newspaper (Scotland)

His name was Brian Garvey.  He was a rhythm guitarist and vocalist in the band.  He has never been replaced.

I've purposefully stayed away from this subject because of the deep personal nature of the loss and the impact that it has had to have had on the band.  There is such a raw quality of grief in this song that I felt I might be intruding if I mentioned the specifics of the loss.  Now that the subject has been broached, I would like to include this except from an older interview, in which the reporter had asked Davy Knowles about the tragedy:

His humility stems in large part from the impact the death of two friends in a car crash in 2004 had on him. The day we chatted would have been the 21st birthday of Brian Garvey, the original rhythm guitarist. In the aftermath of that tragedy he wrote the acoustic "Stay," an emotional, heartfelt tribute.

"It was horrible. It changes everything. They were two of my best friends. It's a very emotional song for me still. We've been playing it for three years and it has never lost its meaning. Ever," comments Knowles. "It made me grow up and realize that if I want do something I have to go ahead and do it. I've got to do it and work to do it because as quickly as it has come about it could all go. It has helped put things in perspective."

What a terrible lesson to have to learn at such a tender age, and, what a lovely gift they have given us with this incredibly moving tribute to both of their friends.

I know that Joe could play one of those kid's guitars with the plastic strings and make it sound good-

Yes, it´s really one of the most "real" and heartfelt Blues songs I ever heard. Makes you so sad and lifts you up with the music again ... like a good song should do.....

If these guys continue how they started, they will have a bright future ahead of them, I´m sure.

For those of you who haven't bought "Roll Away" or seen it performed live:

What a beautiful song...the acoustic guitar makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.....shades of "Guinevere" by CSNY, clearly old folk-influenced.

I concur with the assessment of these young men as amazing musicians and genuinely nice people.   Had a brief few moments to chat with them at the gig in Baltimore at the end of March....very laid-back and down-to-earth....so humble and self-effacing.  Davy apologizes to the audience during the show if "most of the notes he's singing are wrong" due to "too many late nights and not enough sleep", and complaining that his voice is a little "ropey" (Must be UK slang, never heard that term).

Don't miss a chance to see them in a small hall, I predict big things for these talented youngsters.

Re: Beautiful Back Door Slam song 'Stay'

I really love that song. They are wonderfully talented young guys. I bought the DVD of the homecoming show and 'Stay' is a very emotional, beautiful song. How he sings it without breaking up is a miracle. Still can't wait to see them live.
