Topic: Bryan Lee / Neal Black

Hey guys,

My dad and me saw a double concert with Neal Black & the Healers and Bryan Lee at the New Orleans Festival in a little town called Wedelstein last Wednesday. So we had 3 1/2 hours filled with great Blues and Bluesrock tunes - can you ask for more on an evening in the middle of the week?! wink

Neal Black comes from Texas (played together with Stevie Ray Vaughan too) and sings the Blues with a very Tom Waits-like smoky voice ... he had a very good second guitarist (forgot his name unfortunatley....) who also played some Rockabilly in the middle of the set. The guys sure had a lot of fun playing together and ended their show with a wild mixture of "Blues, Country and Heavy Metal" which was pretty cool... here are some pictures of the guys.

The headliner of the show was Bryan Lee of course - the leaflet that was handed out before the show said that Eric Clapton had called him "a real stageburner" before and I couldn´t agree more with Mr. Clapton on that point.
Bryan played some songs from his latest album "Katrina was her name" and also some Blues classics like "Dimples" - but always in his own kind of Bryan Lee-style ... he also had an excellent second guitarist who played some adorable slide guitar tunes in the end. Here are some more pictures ... I also filmed two songs with my camera and will upload them on youtube later, so my dear Sister Libby can see with her own eyes that Bryan Lee is not dead at all! lol
The only thing that was a bit annoying were three totally drunk guys who only came for Bryan Lee and tried to enter the front row while they kept on screaming at the top of their voices in the best Bavarian English dialect "Brrryäään - we loof you här in Tschörmany" ... as it was a seated venue one of the guys tried to get EVERYONE in the hall to stand up while screaming "It´s dä Bluuuuues, it´s dä Bluuuues". The guy who sat next to me in the front row was filmimg all the time and nearly killed the guy who started running from one end of the stage to the other at the end of the set (still screaming "It´s dä Bluuuues" of course). But I guess you can find those guys nearly everywhere where "dä Bluuues" is played... wink

Videos coming soon ......

Hallo,

I liked it, too. The guitar player in Bryan Lee´s band was Christopher Brent Johnson. I´ve never heard of him. He looks quite young and plays guitar in an impressive quality. In special I liked his playing a Voodoo funk version of "Superstitious". Does anyone know if this song is on any of Bryan Lees CDs?

Thank you Eva Liebling, for my videotaped evidence that our Mr. Bryan Lee is, indeed, alive and WELL!!!  I'm going to wait for my hubby to get home to watch the videos in their entirety, but, I've peeked, and, as always, they look superb.  Your review was MOST EXCELLENT also!!!  Glad you and your Dad have such a wunderbar thing to SHARE!!!  So sorry about the big loud drunks.  I blame venue staff as much as I blame the drunks - first, for over-serving, and, secondly, for not putting an IMMEDIATE stop to such behavior.  There really is NO reason for that to go on and on and on.  That is what security is for.  Am I right?

Yes Bryan is from Two Rivers - he used to tune our piano!   He will be playing here on
June 21 at the Waverly Bar and June 22 at Riverwalk which is a free festival along Lake
Michigan.
Thanks for calling us "kids" Roy !!!

Re: Bryan Lee / Neal Black

I wish Bryan would play a full show near Baltimore/DC....he's "headlining" a festival in Delaware next Sat for a little over an hour per the website.  I got a chance to catch a little of his playing with KWS and the 10 Days Out tour I went to with Cathy and Jane, but it was a tease at best.

I highly recommend his CD "Live at the Old Absinthe Bar (Friday Night)" which features some great original tunes, and some funky-fried (funkified?) versions of some classic blues number....as well as brief guest appearances from a very young KWS and Frank Marino.  You can tell from that CD that he is definitely an "entertainer" and not just a guitar player.

There's a pic of me with Bryan Lee on my website. He's a great guy...even signed my guitar.  Bryan said he knew he could make it when Muddy Waters talked to him. Bryan and Kenny Wayne Shepherd are close.
