So Joe, I read the thread, and now I have a question to ask.

I was standing around the other  day, with an R9 hanging around my neck, and I thought, I'll do some of those groovy volume swells like Joe, to get the violin sound you use on Blues Deluxe and the Rachmanninoff thing, BUT, large problem, volume knob is way too far from the strings.
Ususally I use a volume pedal to do that anyway, but I notice your pinky worling away pretty hard during those passaes.
How are you going to do that now if you turf the strat completely?  Another trick I have done is to put a trem on a really square wave, and attack the strings in the through of the wave, gives a groovy violin sound, but I really do that as a trick and for timing practice, an dit limilts me ot a fixed tempo and note interval.
I guess you can set up a Giggliotti for that I suppose.

This is how:

Joe can do it on the Gigliotti as well.

OK, so he can do it on an LP too.  I'm going to have to soak my fingers in fertilizer, make them grow a bit.
Great link, thanks for that, I'm not really a youtuber much.
I much prefer hte LP tone.  My two attempts at strat ownership have not gone well.  I am just too used to the grunt and growl of a Les Paul.  I think I could handle a Gigliotti though, that is good tone too.
And I dig the 4 head set-up.  Give me an unreasonably powerful motorbike any day over one adequate to the task.  I have 4 heads in my music room too, which is possibly silly, but I love it anyway.

Music is in the spaces, so is life.

Christ...I'm going to start an online petition for the return of Blues Deluxe to the set list...

Edit: Ah, and Joe is using the neck pickup when he's doing the volume swells, so that pinky only has to reach to the closest knob.

I was there! <3

What did you expect to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wild beasts sweeping majestically over the fields?

In my opinion Joe had an extremely original sound on the strat, just like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmie Vaughan, Eric Johnson, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray and others have....same guitar, extremely different tones.  Actually Joe is one of the few blues/rock guitarists with an original sound, coming from both his equipment, his hands and his harmonic vocabulary.

I couldn't have said it better.

WOW!  Thanks Rich for starting this thread, which I just read for the first time.  I can't tell you how confused I was about that part of the Guitarist interview and I mentioned in one of the Guitarist's threads how I felt sorry for the Gold Sparkle Strat, I knew there was something else going on.  Thanks Joe for filling us in, to give a Godfather line a different spin, it was business AND personal!  wink  Being passionate often cuts both ways...

I'm not a guitar player, but I'm a music lover since forever and ever and to me:
NO MATTER WHAT EQUIPMENT JOE BONAMASSA PLAYS, HE SOUNDS LIKE JOE BONAMASSA!

So, that's my 2 cents!  Keep showering Gibson with love!  smile

Hey Everybody,
Two reasons actually.. First was the constant comparison to SRV (something that I am truly honored by  but not a fair assessment of the way I play) Second reason I used to spend hours and a hours trying capture this tone I had in my head. When I play the Gibson it just appears naturally. I grew up playing Les Pauls and trying to sound like Paul Kossoff.  It was only due to Bloodline that I need a thinner sound to cut through a 5 piece ensemble.   I guess there is one more reason as well... Due to the fact that Fender copied the gold strat exactly down to its wear marks and such.. Without asking or giving me the slightest bit of credit for it.. I found that to be a very unclassy arrogant move on their part..  And for that reason I have banned any Fender products from being on stage with me... Example If Rick for some reason has a Fender beach towel to keep his hands dry, we will provide him one that says Gibson...  Yes I can be that petty sometimes.... Cant we all :-)

I may have been under a rock when news about Fender copying Joe's Strat came out.

What happened? Did they make an exact replca based on Joe's? What is the story there?

Re: 'Tis a sad day in "Strat-land" for Strat/Joe fans!!

check searches by joe and you may find something.

Re: 'Tis a sad day in "Strat-land" for Strat/Joe fans!!

I remember when this guitar came out
I was stunned there was no mention of Joe

I have seen a few in person, when I saw one on Sunset
I swore Joe traded his in

Fender is making a sig model of everyone these days
not sure why they would not credit Joe in any way
specially considering the price these are selling for
over 4k street price

below is a link to some pics

I'm really pissed this whole thing happened, cuz I am huge
on Joe's Strat tone, I'm a total strat guy
Would love to see a show with Strats and black face Fender amps
Seen the strat numerous times at the Malibu Inn....no more....damn

Well, if Joe is pissed, I ain't buyin one

anyway, pics below

Re: 'Tis a sad day in "Strat-land" for Strat/Joe fans!!

That's not it. The one I saw a picture of was just like Joe's metal flake. Larger and more yellow gold. The finish cracks were identical and the neck wear was identical to his.

Re: 'Tis a sad day in "Strat-land" for Strat/Joe fans!!

I may be wrong, but isn't Joe's strat heavily checked? If Fender would go through the trouble of aging the neck why not knock on Mr. Murphy's door and have him do his thing on the body as well? It's $4,000 on the street for Christ's sake!

This is Joe's Sparkle Strat http://www.flickr.com/photos/14847638@N06/2437359741/
The copy I saw a picture of was identical to this in color and finish cracks. The picture also had neck wear exactly like Joe's
