Topic: Hallo

Hallo,
some of you might know my daughter Eva. In fact we share a common liking of Joe´s music and Blues music in general. My own interest in Blues goes back nearly 50 years when I discovered -initiated by listening to Elvis Presley - Blues represented by Ray Charles, BB King etc., specialising later to be a dedicated fan of John Lee Hooker and Van Morrison. I think Eva was telling you that I socialized her in this kind of music (without planning it) in her early childhood.

We met Joe and his music 2-3 years ago in Roth near Nürnberg. Appreciating him as a brilliant guitar player taking us to a parce de force ride through the world of blues riffs, we were impressed, but not really touched. Significant that I don´t remember if Joe was playing with a band or alone. Half a year later and then some weeks ago in Munich it was much different. Joe´s brilliance was the same or even more but he was embedded in a very subtle network of musical interaction. Not a big ego performing but a group of men harmonizing in a most astonishing way. The Chinese would call it wu wei, doing nothing which means doings things (seemingly)without effort, like things have to be done naturally. I liked these concerts very much being impressed and touched.

Re: Hallo

Welcome Gunter, or Eva's Rock Star Dad, as I like to call you. First off, thanks for the great musical education that you have given Eva. She is amazing! I also get great joy from generations sharing their love for Joe. Please post often and share some of your wisdom! Much respect, Cathy

Re: Hallo

Hi Gunter (sorry I can't put the little squiggle above the u (don't know how))

Anyway welcome to the forum, it's nice to hear from you personally although we do get to hear about you quite a lot from Eva!

Nice pic taken with Eva at the Munich show by the way.

"Stellar" a word used by Joe Bonamassa (also apt as a description of the man himself cool)

Re: Hallo

Welcome, Gunter.  You give a very good description about what Joe's music does to me; it touches my heart and imagination.  Unlike some other very technically proficient players who are impressive, but to what end.  This is what makes Joe special.

Your daughter Eva is a wonderful addition to our little forum family.  We have a saying in the US that "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree."  Enjoy your stay in Bonamassaland.

Re: Hallo

Welcome to our little forum Günter!  Oohhh!  I'm so excited that I was able to get an umlaut over your 'u' !!!  I told Eva that your photo reminds me very much of one of my uncles, who is another fabulously handsome man of German heritage (Krause).

We love your daughter!  We are her second family!  Right, darling Eva?

Have fun here!  Post often!

I know that Joe could play one of those kid's guitars with the plastic strings and make it sound good-

Re: Hallo

Libby,

How do you get that Umlaut!!
I always type an"' e'' behind as I learned at highschool.
Loos a bit stupid but it works, poeple understand it. Eva, Guenther, Geko is it still allowed to do so?

Re: Hallo

What a warm welcome!! Seems to be a very lively community I have joined. Thank you all for your reactions.

You are pleases with Eva and me sharing the same taste in music. I am, too. On the other side I was thinking that I definitively would not have liked in my young years my father listening to the music I did. In the post-war wasteland of German music scene it was a matter of emotional surviving to identify with something different (which was Rock´n´Roll in this time), to develop a sense of personel identity and life style around it and to draw clear-cut borders to the boring world of adults. I don´t complain about: it was rather a wonderfully wild and rebellious time.

Enough about the past. The dude made the point of heart and imagination being both present in Joe´s music. I agree. For us as men it seems to be an important issue to find this subtle balance of positive aggressiveness and tender feelings in music (and somewhere else). Obviously Joe has got this balance in his music. Eric Sardinas has got it, too, but he can´t display it really because his sidemen are too one-sided macho. So it is an achievement of Joe and his band.

Again: thanks for this great welcome

Günter (Guenter) (Gunter)

Libby, I am sure that Uncle Krause was guiding your hand while performing the umlaut.

Re: Hallo

Hallo Guenter,

It's good to finally hear from you after all I've heard about you from your lovely daughter. Not unlike yourself I made sure to share music with my children as I 've raised them. My stepdaughter who I raised since she was almost two is the same age as Eva. My gift to her was Beatles music, sound familiar? Vanessa and I share a liking for one of her favorites, The Donna's and we share CD's when the urge strikes. She and her real father joined her brother, my son JJ, for a Johnny Lang show about five years ago. How often does a daughter get to see a blues show with two Dads? My son on the other hand has been to countless concerts with me since the age of eight. He has attended countless shows now on his own. Aside from his music we share in our love for Lynyrd Skynyrd, AC/DC, and Green Day among others. I would feel negligent if I didn't share the gift of music as a parent. Willkommen meiner Kolleginnen und Vater. Hopefully the entire Knoeferl family will find your way to San Francisco one day and we could all enjoy some great California wine and cuisine followed by of course a good blues show or two. Ask Eva to share those mystery discs I've sent her way too.

Re: Hallo

Greetings Gunter,

It's my pleasure to 'meet' Eva's dad, she is 'some kind of wonderful, yes she is'...and I'll second the saying, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree!  Every good dad, no matter where they live, should be turning their children on to the Beatles, so I knew I liked you before you even posted! smile  Someone mentioned in a photo that Eva posted that you looked familiar, I thought the same thing...excuse me for stereotyping you, but you look like a deep thinking philosopher-type who is sensitive and emotional and rocks as a dad!!!  And the older I get the more I realize that all good things in life come down to finding the optimum balance...Welcome to the forum!!  smile

Re: Hallo

Welcome to the forum Gunter! Congratulations on the wonderful job you have done raising your daughter. I have two daughters that are 22 and 25 years old, and I know it is not an easy job.
Eva has made many friends here and is big part of the "forum family", so it's great to have you join us too.
