Re: Reminder-Rock the Cradle w/ Crosby Loggins-Week 3-Tonight 10 PM ET/PT

Whoa Vince!  In this business?  The music business is HUGE.  It encompasses more than the little corner of it you are looking at.  If you want to "star" in the corner of the market you are talking about and you place all importance on a Platinum record, then you must be willing to do whatever it takes.  I wholeheartedly support that you have and are entitled to your opinion.  I'm all for you stating it in a civil manner.  So far so good.  I also understand how you feel.  It makes you wonder, doesn't it?  I would caution against dwelling on the negative.  You can do as well as you want to.

Willie Nelsons first platinum hit happened in 1976 when he was 43 years old.  There are others.  I've been in and around the music biz for over 35 years, from bar band to recording studio.  You've never heard of me but I get paid, brother.  The music business, in todo, is not a youthful market, per se.  Some radio is, Pop is.  I agree with you there.

The biz has changed a little.  There has always been and always will be producers, promoters, music execs, etc. who will exploit that 16 year old...boy or girl.  Technology claims its own advances or changes, if you will, as well.

I like Crosby Loggins.  He's a nice guy and a talented human being.  If I sit in judgement on myself, there are a lot of people making it in "the biz" that don't have "it" for me.  I wouldn't begin to guess their "it" factor.  They make more money than me.  And the rest of the world has spoken.  I scratch my head a lot! lol  even on this forum...

Who knew KISS would be a billion dollar juggernaut for 35 years?  Not me.  You can make the music you want if you target a niche market.  I learned that, painfully, over the last few eons.  Hang in there man.  Nobody is gonna agree with everything written on this forum.

yes but the thing about it is in this business, once you hit 35 or 36 years of age...if you havent made it by then by industry standards you are considered over the hill and might as well be put out to pasture. when's the last time you read about an act that was over the age of 36 (who hasn't previously sold a huge unit of records) going single or double platinum? it doesn't happen because the music business nowadays is a youthful market...you said so yourself by saying that a 16-yr-old girl is sellable...and unfortunately thats how the business has changed....and at the same time, being appealing isn't the same as being sellable. so as for it taking time, it's true...but there's not alot of time to be had.

Bruce Springsteen recently had a number one record. Bob Seger, John Fogerty just recently had very well received albums. You build the fan base, it doesn't matter one iota what age you are. You will sell.

Joe's going to play the Royal Albert Hall next year. That's quite a big step. Again, one step at a time, one fan at a time.

We can go round and round on this but I think it comes down to McDonald's hamburgers versus Filet Mignon.  Mickey D's sells more but would you say it is better?  If all you care about is who moves the most units you care more about the business than the music.  If that's your choice, good for you.  But you've lost my interest.  If someone can do it the right way like Joe without sacrificing his musical vision for focus groups and lowest-common-denominator marketing then that means something to me.  Gourmand vs. Gourmet.  Britney Spears versus Joe.  If Joe wanted to tart himself up and sell his soul to the highest bidder he could.  It's those "artists" who aim to be the flavor of the month whose careers are over by 35.  Remember, Joe's model is BB and Buddy, not Quiet Riot or Cinderella.

by the way...i may actually be the one weird person here who likes mcdonalds hamburgers over fillet mignon...

Re: Reminder-Rock the Cradle w/ Crosby Loggins-Week 3-Tonight 10 PM ET/PT

James Blunt was 30 when "You're Beautiful" came out. Jeff Tweedy was 29 when Wilco came out with their first successful album, Being There, and they have gotten bigger the older they have gotten. Joe's 30. There's plenty of time, especially considering the fact that he is generally looked at as being younger than he actually is. Considering where Joe has gone popularity-wise from age 25 to age 30, just think what he can do between the ages of 30 and 35.

And the point regarding Fogerty and those other guys is that IF YOU BUILD THE AUDIENCE, it doesn't matter. Joe does his one show at a time. Those guys had hit records. But let's consider: you hadn't heard jack crap outta Bob Seger in 10+ years before Face The Promise came out. It did well. He had been thought of as a has-been, a worse fate than Joe Bonamassa being 30. He sold very well. You build the audience, no matter how it happens, there reaches a point where it just explodes. Look at Los Lonely Boys. Yes, they're young, but the music they play isn't. They had a huge success. Age is nothing. It takes the right song at the right time to hit the right audience. Los Lonely Boys didn't sell with the kiddies. No, they sold with the 40 and over crowd because they reminded folks of what used to be on the charts. They sold with the people who want to find the next guitar god. They sold with the people who loved Santana. That's their crowd, not the teenyboppers or the audience of MTV or VH1.

Considering that Joe is doing this with his own record label, without the push of a major record label, is a big deal. The reason why he has a great chance is because the following he is building is a devoted one. It's not one where they hear a song on the radio and go, "Oh that guy is good" and maybe go buy an album. A lot of Joe's fans are invested emotionally in this guy's career. They genuinely want to see him do well.

That beats anything a record company can do.

Re: Reminder-Rock the Cradle w/ Crosby Loggins-Week 3-Tonight 10 PM ET/PT

Tonight I thought Johnston's daughter had the best chick voice. In fact she is the only chick left that can sing.

Jesse Snider did a good impersonation of Billy Idol with out the Elvis lip.

Crosby did a very good version of I don't want to be. Gave it a little showy ending. Much better performance than last week. He still is the most talented man woman or beast on that show.

The Beasts were clearly Bobby Browns kid and Al B Sure's kid. They couldn't carry a tune with a handle attached.

Poor Olivia Newton John. The kid of hers is scarry.

Vive la difference, and nothing personal.  Just different tastes.

Agreed on all counts, Jim.  I liked the fact that the song showed off the great dynamics of Crosby's voice.  Plus, it rocked, plus he played with emotion and enthusiasm.  He is getting better before our eyes.  Any way you cut it, this is an invaluable experience for him.

Re: Reminder-Rock the Cradle w/ Crosby Loggins-Week 3-Tonight 10 PM ET/PT

I couldn't believe Eddie Money's daughter got thrown off before some of those other trainwrecks.

I had my recently calibrated talent/performance meter on during all of the performances and here are the ratings it recorded. (My talent/performance meter goes from 1 to 5, 5/5 being both very talented/and a great performer)

Crosby 4.5/2.5
Snider 3/4.5
Money 3/2.5
Johnston 3.25/2
Walsh 2.5/3
Hammer 2/1
Brown 1/1.5
Sure .75/1 (the needle pushing hard on the 1)
Newton-John - The meter couldn't take the strain, in an attempt to record a negative number (which it was never programmed for), became frustrated and launched itself, Kamakazee style, into the TV and mercifully put an end to the carnage and Olivia's embarrassment.

Re: Reminder-Rock the Cradle w/ Crosby Loggins-Week 3-Tonight 10 PM ET/PT

I agree Ken, Jesse Money has more talent than half the contestants on there. This just validates my feeling that the whole thing is a sham. I gotta admit I'm a little biased since I've been to many a goat rope with her old man. Jesse may have needed to get down the road anyway as she performs with her dad these days singing backups and duet parts and Eddie is touring at the moment.
