Topic: Google Earth

Just flying a kite.

I was playing around with GE for the first time in ages yesterday when trying to find the location of another forum member, and it occurred to me that it might be fun for more of us to share locations, since we all live so spread around the world.

Now I realize that normally speaking people wouldn't want to post their exact addresses on the web, but that shouldn't be an insurmountable problem. For example, I'd be less bothered about exactly which house in a particular area was actually so and so's, it's more about getting the 'feel' of the area, i.e. urban, rural, seriously out in the boonies, whatever. wink

Thoughts?

Nice one, Stu. That's much more like I had in mind, rather than 'Long Island' or '20 minutes out of Baltimore'. For example, when I put my son's zipcode into GE it shows me a view of his general area which gives a good idea of what it's like in suburban Indianapolis. But without his exact address I'd never find his house in a million years.

My postcode is 1054NM, Amsterdam, which gives a realistic picture of my immediate area without in any way disclosing the exact location of my apartment building. This area is also a 10 minute walk from the Paradiso. big_smile

Hi George, Your post has prompted me to download Google Earth & check it out. Where have I been? I didn't know this free program was out there. I knew about the Google Map stuff but this is very cool. You can angle your viewpoint and it appears as if you are flying over the landscape. If any of you out there don't have this thing yet, I highly recommend it. Here's the link: http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html   I also found it much easier to just enter the postal zip code rather than logitude & latitude info. My zip code is 07438 if any of you are interested in seeing where this old redneck is from.  Thanks George, Pete

Sweet Pete (or Anybody),

I'm going to download Google Earth, as you suggested.  I have one question - sorry if it's silly.  When I'm about to download something and am prompted to make a choice between whether I want to Run or Save something, which should I do?

Thanks much,

Anything from a reputable source (like Google) can be safely saved to your HD. You 'save' GE to your HD, then it will install (easy and straightforward) and away you go!

Aw shucks, you ain't doing too badly.

Pete - I found that the flying, angled thingy takes a bit of getting used to. You shoot off all over the place if you're not careful.

C'mon people, more zipcodes....:P

Re: Google Earth

Have any of you ever turned Google Earth around and looked into space?  You can zoom, choose what types of things you want labeled, etc.  Not LIVE shots of course, but still very cool.  Maybe I should've posted this in that lunar eclipse thread the other day.

Re: Google Earth

Okay, let's see if this works.  If it doesn't, my zip code is 92201.  Check out my neck of the woods (although, as I told Pete, we certainly don't have any woods around here!)

I live in the Southern California desert, just east of Palm Springs.  Our natural landscape is quite beautiful, particularly at this time of year, as our cacti and wildflowers begin to bloom.  This Google satellite map will show you a few more interesting things about our area......for instance, do you see how much GREEN there is?  Can you see all the golf courses?  There are more than 100 in our little valley.  Also, if you look at the green rectangles bordered by Avenue 50, Avenue 52, Madison and Monroe Streets, those are our polo fields, where the rich and famous, and on occasion, even the royal play.  We have a lot of agriculture also - although, it is not nearly what it used to be, as we continue to increase our population exponentially.  We grow just about everything - lots of produce, dates, and tons of citrus.  Actually, in just a few weeks, over a painfully short period, the citrus blooms will explode, filling the air with heavenly delights.  Certainly, this is my favorite time of year.

Secondly, I thought this might interest a few of you, especially after last night's earth shaking event in the UK!  This is another map of my vicinity.....Indio is my town (see in the middle of the map), the red line is the famous San Andreas fault (little rascally tectonic plate shifting thing), and that very large black shape that runs diagonally on the right of this shot is the Salton Sea.  It's quite interesting to live in such close proximity to a fault line with so much seismic activity.

I'm jealous of your space Jane.....it's the only thing I crave.....more space.  Cathy mentioned Towson.  Are you nearby?  I have an old friend there.
