Re: Shooting at Northern Illinois University

They all are tragic, but this one hit very close to home, both literally and figuratively.
My niece attends school there and was on campus at the time of the incident. She was not near the area of the shooting, but was "locked down" for a period of time.
With 22 and 24 year old daughters, we know another 6 of their friends who attend school there. Thank God they were all OK. My prayers go out to everyone affected by this senselessness.

What is happening to the world we live in? This is yet another very sad story. In the UK people seem to be getting beaten up on a regular basis, and sometimes kicked to death, for trying to protect thier property from drunken kids hanging around the streets at night. Sometimes I wonder where it will all end.

I don't consider myself a violent or ignorant man, but family threatened...once the talking stops...I get very cold inside.  It's time.

Bill, Thank God for your family & friends safety.  I am sickened.

Re: Shooting at Northern Illinois University

As a Resident Assistant and a college student, seeing this worries me a lot. I love my job, but part of it is if there is to see what's going on if there's a situation with the hall you're in. You're not instructed to get in the middle of it (especially if it turns violent) but you're supposed to go see. And, in the case of the Virginia Tech shooting, that was one of the first two people killed, was a resident assistant hearing a situation and going to see what was going on, and getting shot. But, I love my job, I love the communities I've built in the two years I've built as a resident assistant.

In the end, you just have to keep an eye out for what's going on, but at the same time, not worry yourself to death about it. I feel the pain for all the victims' families and the entire student body. Along with them, I'll have the members of the Residential Life staff at Northern Illinois because there is nothing harder to do as a resident assistant than to try to help someone through a tragedy, whether it affects just them or the whole student population.

Re: Shooting at Northern Illinois University

Sorry to read that this is hitting too close to home for Bill and Gary.  Deezer, you've always seemed very mature to me, trust your gut when you're leary of someone emotionally unstable, its better to be safe than sorry...

This topic totally unravels every one of my nerve endings, so I just want to add something to keep in mind.  Since the Virginia Tech incidence, colleges seem to have put in some extra securities for emergencies.  Alert systems are now in place that can send emergency messages from the college to the students and parents via cell phones, computers, telephones, etc.  When I signed up for my college student I did it for 3 people; Mom & Dad (home & work) & the student.  One night about 2 in the morning my cell went off, it said there was a gun shot in an outdoor parking lot and the campus was in lock down.  (There was a multi-cultural event which drew from a wide area, it was believed to be an outsider, no one was hurt)  Most importantly, the message got out!

Most important reminder for the students is to keep their cell phones charged and on vibrate when they are in class so they could receive a text message.
