Topic: Another movie comment

Recommending or reviewing movies seems to be growing in popularity here. I for one appreciate that, because I don't often have time to sit down and watch an entire movie. When I do, I'm disappointed when it turns out to be a waste of 2 hours.

Anyway the kids came buy this weekend and left a few rental DVDs for us to watch. One of them was a movie called "The Hunting Party" with Richard Gere. I really wasn't  interested in watching 2 hours of Gere doing his trademark squint/nose-wrinkle/forced exhale expression, but the wife wanted to watch it...

Much to my surprise it was a pretty good movie. It came out last year but I never heard anything about it. I guess it did not do very well at the box office. I wouldn't necessarily rush out and rent it - but if it shows up on HBO or other cable channel, it's worth a watch.

I watched License to Wed with Robin Williams, and while I am not a fan of him I thought the movie was hilarious!

I love movies! I will check out the "Hunting Party." I never heard of it either. Two I would recommend are "Crash", which at times had my heart pounding and me yelling at the T.V. and my all time favorite- "Boondock Saints" Great movie! Hope you enjoy them!

Re: Another movie comment

I just watched a great Western,   "3:10 to Yuma" with Russell Crowe.  There's something about this movie.   Patty

Just saw 3:10 last week, worth the time, not the best, but a good western remake. My last two netflix were Bourne Ultimatum and Eastern Promises, I recommend them both. Promises has a serious plot twist towards the end that you never see comin'. The Hunting Party should be in my mailbox tomorrow. Now if Netflix could find me a copy of Barfly to watch again. As I mentioned in another thread they don't have Inside Moves either.

Re: Another movie comment

We had a Godfather marathon starting on Friday night, watched 1 a day. Godfather II and III, I had only watched from beginning to end, maybe once before. My son recently read the book, which is mainly Godfather I and thru conversation we all realized we had some of the names and people confused. Some details from the book are left out in the movie, like Johnny Fontaine, who I think made most people think of a Frank Sinatra type. Its definitely a movie that seems every time I watch it, I pick up some other little detail, like the statue of liberty off in the distance when someone is being shot & dumped, etc.  I think I'd forgotten how good Al Pacino was, just how coldstone hearted he becomes and that piercing stare!!  He was so powerful in total silence!

My son had been reading things on the internet about Heath Ledger, so I'm not positive this is true, but Heath was considered by some to be the next Marlon Brando...Apparently, Heath secluded himself for a month to get into character for the Joker, similar to how Brando once did.  It could have been a combination of bummer things that were going on in his life, but it seems Heath became very disturbed emotionally during the Joker role.

I always remember our first Joe concert and when Marlon Brando died in 2004, since we saw Joe on the Friday night going into 4th of July weekend, Brando had just passed away.  Joe played the theme to the Godfather, it was an unexpected surprise.  I heard Brando's son passed away this weekend, he died of pneumonia, he is the one that shot his stepsister's boyfriend..yikes...there seemed to be alot of sadness in their family.

Anyway, like my brother always said about gangsters...live by the gun, die by the gun...

The Godfather series is always a great experience.

"I understand.  You found paradise in America.  You had a good trade, made a good living, the police protected you and there were courts of law and you didn't need a friend like me.  But, now you come to me and you say "Don Corleone, give me justice."  But you don't ask with respect.  You don't offer friendship.  You don't even think to call me Godfather.  Instead, you come into my home on the day my daughter's to be married and you ask me to do murder for money."

And I quote this with cottonballs stuffed in my cheeks for dramatic effect....

I don't know that she's a big fan of his...she did like him in "Officer and a Gentleman" though (which was filmed at Fort Worden near Port Townsend, about 60 miles North of here).

Re: Another movie comment

Another great recent Richard Gere movie is "The Hoax", the story of the Clifford Irving fake Howard Hughes biography. Not only is it a compelling thriller but Gere does a fantastic job protraying Irving.

I'm just saying.

Rent or buy the "Mothman Prophecies" with Richard Gere and Laura Linney. I bought that some time ago and it's an excellent movie to to sit down and watch. I've watched it a number of times and still enjoy it as much as the first time I viewed it. I'd put it at about 4 1/2 stars (***** = Buy it at whatever the cost.   **** = Buy it when it goes discount.) Based on actual events, it will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Roy

Yes, this is a very good movie too. Quite scary without showing any monster.

I'm just saying.

Re: Another movie comment

I hear that Richard Gere is a big fan of gerbils...

I also hear that this is a silly urban legend....

Either way, he has been in some pretty good movies.

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Hadn't seen it for a long time, but bought the DVD "Leaving Las Vegas" starring Nicolas Cage and Elizabeth Shue. Started watching it, but actually stopped the movie because the kids were awake. Forgot how vulgar it is and didn't want any young ears hearing things. Watched it in full yesterday morning before anyone was awake. Very sobering (not in that context) movie. Two people at the end of their ropes meet and fall in love, but nothing like your typical love story. The other weird thing for me which I had forgotten about, is their character names are Ben and Sera which are my children's names. Although, my daughter's is spelled differently. A very well acted movie that almost makes you feel dirty by the time it is over. On my 5 star scale, I'd give it 4 stars (**** = Buy it when it goes discount) which is what I did.

Roy

I tried watching this movie, and had to turn it off... very depressing, it reminded me of a friend who passed on in his 30s...dude drank himself to destruction....

Do you remember "Terminator 2 Judgement Day"....the part where the T-1000 ( that Patrick dude) flys threw the second story building on a motorcycle and grabs on to the helicopter in mid air...well thet scene was shot on my route in Fremont, Ca....I knew all the back streets to get in the area...it was all new commercial building construction at the time, and the cops thought they had all the streets covered to block off the site see ers...WRONG!...I got home from work and tell the wife and kids ...well, the kids were all over me..."come on dad, we wanna go watch it"...Deb was all nervous, but we went down there...I got to within 100 feet of the building and parked around the back of another building...we lyed down behind a grassy knoll, and waited for hours...the kids started getting tired so we left about 1am....good thing too!...all that glass that went flying might have showered us...either that or the cops would have found us...lol...wish we had stayed...a few other carriers at work were gonna do the same thing...but they didnt think it was possible to make it through..."4 wheel drive baby, you can climb anything in that area"...is what I told em

Hmmmm, very interesting. Dave, please step over here and sit down under this bright light, I've got a couple of questions for you. Would you like a cigarette? May I ask, where were you on November 22, 1963? Do you have or have had, any affiliation with the CIA? Does the name Sam Giancana mean anything to you? Now don't just sit there shaking your head no. I know you have some information for me. Don't make me bring in joebeacon as the bad cop. You know what he's capable of!

I'm waiting..........

Loved that show, but not as much as my step daughter who even attended an X-files convention with her dad on Mare Island in Vallejo, Ca. years ago during the shows run. She met lots of cast members, but she was disappointed that Scully & Mulder didn't make it. They say the two elements of a great episode were flashlight scenes and Scully yelling MULDER!!!!!!!! Loved the movie too. Wait, what's that on my kitchen floor, Intelligent Oil???????
