Topic: Weber Beam Blocker?

Anybody using these? If so, what's your opinion? It's used to diffuse the high frequency death beam coming straight from the center of the speakers of your amp or cab. I just received mine today, and will hopefully install it tonight. Should give a similar result as the plexiglass shield Joe uses (though probably not as much volume control).

It has great reviews on Harmony Central (I know, I know...everything gets great reviews there...:P).

I think it's a cool concept, and cheap too $18 for 12". I'll let you know how it works. (I don't have any affiliation with Webervst).

Once I was playing with some guys, and we invited a singer/guitar player over for a jam/audition. We hadn't setup with a singer before, so we moved the amps around a little to make room for his mic and amp. He was a real nice guy, decent singer and guitar player, and said he had a great time with us. After he left, the rest of us hung around and jammed a little more. I moved over a little (right where he was singing and playing), and realized my amp was tilted back and aimed right at his head! And we were playing loud that day! He was such a nice guy, that he didn't say anything to me, and just withstood the death ray coming from my 45watt Budda for a couple of hours!

Re: Weber Beam Blocker?

Definatly let me know how those work out for you.  I have been thinking about buying them and if they work well I will probably get them for all my amps.  Thanks
Mike

Re: Weber Beam Blocker?

wow. its one of those "i coulda thought of that" inventions.  Easier to carry than plexiglass too.

when I had a 5150 half stack, I literally turned the amp around to face the wall.

Well, I've had this in my amp for about a week now, and I really like the Beam Blocker. I'm not playing with anyone at this time, so I haven't tried it in a band situation yet, but have been able to crank it up good a few times. It pretty much does what it is intended to do, which is to diffuse the high frequencies from coming directly from the front of your speaker, and blend with the mids and lows in all directions. I get a much fuller overall sound.

Now, instead of tilting the amp back to hear the highs, I can keep the amp on the floor, and get an accurate assessment of the sound, and adjust the EQ on the amp accordingly.

I don't think this would be a replacement for a plexi shield, if your using it to get power tube saturation since it doesn't control the volume, it controls the EQ mix. But, I don't have to turn my amp up as loud to hear myself with these in because the sound comes right up at you.

For $26 shipped, it's a great upgrade for cheap.

I ordered and tried it on Starship Bonamassa to stop the death beam eminating from other alien spacecraft. Can't say it worked real well, but the sound it made was really groovy. Not sure how Joe's plexiglass shield would work either, except for the Spitatorians whose main beam is nothing but saliva.

Good point, but I think that goes without saying.

Hmmmmm interesting....... Your name is Ken and you live in Orlando, FL. There is a member of our crew, a Lt. Susan, who also comes from Orlando, FL and speaks of a boyfriend by the name of Ken. Could this be a coincidence? Just how many Ken's could possibly be living down in Orlando, FL? Like I said interesting, very interesting.......

Re: Weber Beam Blocker?

I would love to try a beam blocker, but to have one sent over here to the IK, costs silly money, and then we have customs to pay as well.
The legend that is SRV used gaffa tape on the outside of his cab, I tried this and it works, to an extent. Looks bloody horrible though :-)
I made a blocker myself, i bought one of those acoustic guitar feedback stopper things, and fixed it to the inside of my amp, on the grill cloth, that works fine, the sound, no matter were you stand, is the same, so, I assume it is doing its job by dispersing the sound evenly.

Try it....

Re: Weber Beam Blocker?

There is nothing gaffe tape cannot do.  I fixed my shoes with them one time, and they stayed together for a very long time.  Also, you get that grip that you just can't get with duct tape.

Re: Weber Beam Blocker?

Hi all,
Just put a set of these in a Marshall 1936 cab and it made a HUGE difference. I now can stop splitting my bass players eardrums at rehearsal.(is that good or bad....i don't know:D) These do not change the volume at all but do remove the harsh high frequencies and disperse them. One  thought I did have was whether or not these would affect a mic'd cabinet? I run a palmer speaker emulator through our p.a. so I don't have an opportunity to check this at a gig but it sure will make rehearsal easier on anyone standing fifteen feet in front of my amp.

Re: Weber Beam Blocker?

I just got an amp stand for my 1x12 combo amp. And unless I'm standing directly across from the speaker, I cannot hear it. I'm going to get one of these and report back.

Re: Weber Beam Blocker?

My thoughts about beam blocker are mixed.
They should compensate the spotty radiation of the sound like some cabinets do.
(hope that makes any sense to you, difficult to describe even in german.. roll )
This has something to do with cabinet construction. With a chambered cabinet this sound-tunnel-effect doesn't appear.
In fact its a shame that the cabinet builder wont improve that.
But i'm curious what effect this beam blockers have so I will try them too.

Re: Weber Beam Blocker?

You could always just make your own.  I bet that Ted Webber doesn't have more the $10 in these things.  Personally I think that the only people that would notice them doing much are people who play at high volumes and honestly most people are going to mic their speaker now days.  So unless your sound requires you to play very loud and depend on it more then a mic your not going to notice much.  The concept is old too, I don't know why people act like this is some new thing.  Its not SRV did it for years.  I personally like having the ear piercing tunnel of death when I mic.   I shoot for a bright sound and my other guitarist which you guys would like better because he a Les paul guy has the darker sound.

Just a side note. Ted Weber just died a couple of weeks ago. There's a link to his obituary that describes a very interesting life. RIP Ted...

Re: Weber Beam Blocker?

Yep I heard this too. Keep your weber speakers (if you have some) in honour.
But I also heard that the quality of parts went down since his son took over the business.
I once had the blue dogs. Cool speaker really. R.I.P Ted...

Re: Weber Beam Blocker?

Surely it must be quite easy to make these yourself?

Infact.. seeing as I'm on a bit of a crafting spree at the moment I might have a pop. You guys that have bought some, can you tell me what kinda material the cone is? Is it quite thick? any idea what it's made out of?
