Topic: Sam Bush

Dear Ladies and Gents..
Sam was great tonight.. Love his style..  Like me with bluegrass.. Breaking all the rules and still killing it.  All those who are coming to the next 3 shows with us and Sam are in for a real treat.  Plus he is a hell of a nice guy and so is all the band and crew.  Like working with a bluegrass or newgrass version of ourselves.  Nice guys doing it for the right reasons and eating aftershow pizza..  Very cool.. Got to thank William Morris Agency for this.. We are Bev Hills based and the are Nashville based and they got together to create this package.  It rocks.. Thanks for giving me a very great musical experience.  Im sitting in tomorrow for his encore.

Re: Sam Bush

I'll second that! Even got a little Bob Marley! Sorry you didn't sit in tonight, but I have no complaints. Thanks!!!!!!!!             Cathy

Re: Sam Bush

I had brain methane boil over talking with someone 2 days ago wondering aloud who he was...But I have seen Sam before and very luckily with some of the guys from some of the old New Grass Revival pairings including Bela Fleck & Jerry Douglas...incredibly cool stuff.  Interestingly, New York State, including New York City, is chock full of bluegrass musicians...  Lots of great talents out there.  Sam is just incredible on the mandolin, none like him.  Thanks William Morris Agency to whomever got a brainstorm there.  See 'em together, sure it'll be another one for the ages.  Sam does do a bit of reggae Cathy, which Bob Marley song did you get?  Joe, tell Sam that Ozzie Smith, the best shortstop I've ever seen play, was the San Diego Padres gift to the Cardinals, having left town thanks to San Diego's "Trader Jerk", Jack McKeon. The Padres management treated Ozzie like crap. Glad Sam adores him though. Two of a kind, Ozzie & Sam, very exciting. Kinda like Sam and you Joe, two of a kind, very exciting.  Ask Sam about the fusion of Bluegrass into Newgrass Joe, (remind anyone of someone trying something a little different these days, hmm hmm, who am I referring too, I wonder???!!!) and also how it has been received outside the US of A over the years, where the people may have a totally open mind regrading music, with a nearly built in fascination (it still exists folks) in anything "American"...  Have fun Joe & fans!!!

Re: Sam Bush

i agree that sam is an amazing performer to watch.  and seeing him at rams head made it extra cool because of the intimacy of the venue.  i was pretty astounded that so many people left during sam's set however, but it gave me the chance to move down closer to the stage (i was the gal in the ratdog hat and braided pigtails standing behind the soundboard for joe's set).      and i eat my words from my last post when i was complaining about the chairs.  although i didn't have chair seats, i did like how it prevented some of the stereotypical concert-crashers to make their way upfront and invade the front stage with their obnoxious fist pumping and "whoooo hooo's" over the lyrics and music.  (although i did have a jerk standing near me who thought it appropriate to LOUDLY "whooo hoooo" every time joe went from one riff to another).  i dunno...just one of my pet peeves.  anyhow, yes, sam was amazing, and anyone who goes to future shows, i really urge you to stick around and watch him.  i felt bad when people started leaving their seats, 'cause at one point i noticed sam just watching people file out of their seats as he played and i just felt for him.  i was in it for the long haul, so as i said, i just used it as an opportunity to get closer.  when sam played, i stood behind the soundboard and cupped my ears to help draw in the stage sound and block out some of the talkers near me.

oh, hey, joe...one suggestion.....i wonder if you should get the t-shirt people to get a better variety of shirts.  i'm the kind of gal that likes the little tank tops or ladies cut shirts, and all they had to offer last night was black t-shirts that looked kinda big.  aside from that, everything was awesome.  thanks for a great show....

Re: Sam Bush

Yeah.  Having an hour ride home, I didn't really expect to stay for much of Sam...but I was really, really impressed.  I haven't seen too many mandolin players, but he was incredible.  Anyone else think he looks like Eric Clapton circa 1988?

Re: Sam Bush

I love the mandolin and just last week I had gotten an e-mail from Charity Folks about a mandolin Paul McCartney was auctioning off, which got me to thinking how its being used more in music these days.  My hubby has a really beautiful mandolin that was made by a local when he studied abroad in Italy...beautiful craftsmanship.  Anyone have sound clips of Sam Bush?  Thanks.

Re: Sam Bush

Glad to hear the reviews about Sam. Joe - the only question that has been rattling around in my mind is whether the two masters will be playing together. It sounds like you answered that with the fact you will play in his encore..Look forward to seeing you Sunday in the Whaling City - New London!

Re: Sam Bush

no no no jane....it was not you who was "whoo hooing" that was annoying me (i too, throw in the occasional cheer, fist pump and whoo hoo as well).....and i LOVE when people have a genuine enthusiasm and interest in the performance.  the dude i'm talking about was some kid near me who was talking to his girlfriend most of the time, but would turn towards the stage about every 2 minutes and "whoo hoo" for no reason, just to make it "look" like he was paying attention.  then he was on his cell phone talking to someone, and i overheard him say "yeah, i'm at a concert watching this guy joe-something, i dunno".  needless to say it took all i had to avoid telling the kid to take a hike, so i just ignored him and kept on enjoying the show....but aside from that, i thought the crowd & vibe was great.  joe is an amazing performer.  my best friend's husband came with me (i paid for his ticket and beers in order to convince him to go), and by the end of the show he was just blown away and was incredibly thankful and said he's never seen anything like that in his life.  on the ride home he was like "uh, i think i'm headed to record & tape traders tomorrow to buy some of joe's cd's!"  whoo hoo!  a new fan!  yippiee!!  what a great time.  great show.  awesome, awesome time!!!

Re: Sam Bush

Yeah...the setup for the show was fairly annoying to me.  I got General Admission seats, which relegated me to the bar area downstairs as I hit a ton of traffic coming from DC.  People were talking the whole time, and no matter how much shushing Joe and the rest of us tried, it didn't matter.

Re: Sam Bush

I want to add that Sam's band includes a wicked banjo player, an acoustic guitar player/singer, a bass player who used a range of instruments from standard Fender bass to small electric standup, to full upright bass..excellant..and drummer. Their music is "full". It makes you "Yee-ha". NOT something to experience sitting down..I had to get up and kick my heels a little! lol    Remember to keep an open mind..music is one big family...Cathy

Re: Sam Bush

I'm really looking forward to the show tonight. Sam seems like a great guy and his band looks great as well. Now that encore is priceless..... smile

Re: Sam Bush

Joe-

I hope you'll be sitting in with Sam for his encore on Saturday too @ Penn's Peak.  I would love to see that!

Re: Sam Bush

Hey Ya'll
I too hate the loud yelling at the wrong time. I've done my share of SHHHHHHHHHing at almost every show I go to. When the artist asks for SHHHHHHHHHHHH, and it doesn't work, that's bad. Sams set was amazing. What I really want say is that I've Mr. Bonamassa(He Doesnt like it when I call him that) play with 3 different bands and I have to say this one is it for me. Not to put down the others but I spent half of today taking back stuff I don't steal.     Once again...Thanks for sharing your talents...Mr. Bona...JOE. Keep up the good work. Jane it was real nice finally meeting you...You keep up the good work on this site.      "We all must go through what we went through to get to where we're going" Peace All. Darrell

Yeah Sam was great. I think it being late on a school night was the main reason a number of people left.
i hope I wasn;t the woohoo fist pumper you refer too Sunny Skies (I was to the right of the soundboard facing the stage) and i'm hoping we'll be good friends one day but one of my pet peeves is people who don't care for others enthusiasm, I try not to do it after every riff, and basically when Joe pauses and who i figure would scratch his head if there weren't any whoo hoos. I know people take it over the top including myself at times but i dunno, hope you aren't talking about me, if so, sorry. i still think the chairs bite in that sort of venue and i completely behave myself in a theater type setting.

I would have loved to see Joe jam with Sam's band and I'll enjoy seeing Sam Bush again someday but I would have prefered the show to not have been a double bill. That in no way is saying anything bad about Sam so please don't get that idea. I'm sort of suprised Joe wasn't more familiar with him before last night however.
he was awesome, i said more in the setlist section

joe , are you playing with sam tomorrow night out on long island .........joe
