Tangerine Dream - Raum (2022)
2nd album since the death of Edgar Frosse and while there are no discernible guitar bursts, the band still remain true to the original vision and soundscapes while managing the trick balance of sounding fresh & contemporary and avoiding the "ambient" tag, even though they probably invented it.
Morganway - self-titled (2019)
Bought this, and it's "Live At Epic" twin after last night's show in town. A little bit Folk (or Bluegrass to you in the US) and a little bit Country Rock. But a whole lot of quality and fun.
Here's my thought's on the evening's proceedings (Kenny, Spoiler alert, so look away now!)
Newcastle: Cluny2 - 3/4/22
Must be getting back into the gigging habit; last night was the first time in a long while I've done gigs on consecutive evenings... It wasn't planned with any great intent; I'd heard good reports about this band, saw they were in town and thought "what the hell!" Turned out to be a bloody good decision, been a long time since I've come away after a show feeling so "lifted"; not since the legendry Lindisfarne Christmas Shows of yore. So who was this band you ask - hailing from Norwich - Morganway.
The evening kicked off with a set from a genre-straddling, newish band, The People Versus. Hard to pin them down to any sort of genre, especially when they were at half-strength, just vocalist Alice Edwards backed by guitarist and a cellist (sorry guys, didn't catch the names...). An interesting set, noted if nothing else for Alice's vocals sounding much like Noosha Fox. (Yeah, bet that's got some heads scratching...)
And so to the main part of the evening... Some reminders of early Heart and equal measure of mid 1970s Fleetwood Mac, but to be honest, you really need to check these guys out for yourselves, but make sure you're wearing plenty of socks, as they'll knock you right out of them, and dance off whatever's left. Great songs, rich with infectious rhythms and sumptuous 4 and 6 part harmonies, the best this side of ABBA. SJ Mortimer has a voice that goes straight for the heart & soul; then there's the double-whammy of [twins] Callum & Kieran Morgan on guitar & bass, Callum also doing vocal duties. This is bound together by fiddler Nicole Terry and the whole lot is given backbone by keyboards from Matthew Brocklehurst and drums from Edward Bullinger.
Maybe not the longest set, the guys have only one full studio album between them, but each song was given full vent and the only cover of the evening was a breakdown of Dolly's Jolene, giving each musician a share of spotlight. That said, the had a packed (on a Sunday!!!) Cluny2 a show to remember, the place was bouncing and the crowd roars were probably heard over at The Tyne Bar. Just gotta ask, what must Morganway be like on a Friday or Saturday night?
Some video (not from last night, it hasn't been posted yet), but just for flavour...

seems like it used to be that we didn't get all that many uploads to the Utube from UK concerts. Maybe we did and I just didn't pick up on them, I dunno. But they are all over this Eric Gales tour and it's not just a few people, it's a whole bunch of them

darn good cover by TMS, vocals are very decent. Maximillian is quickly becoming my new fav guitarist, and he's playing the Gibson SG same as Tony did

Reuben Gingrich - Secret of the Forest
It's near bed time. Slow down music. Gingrich's the drummer in The Main squeeze.
Sounds Snarky Puppyish....
Some on here may remember Peter Shoulder from groups such as The Union.
Here's a new track, broadcast last night, from his current project Sloper, cover of the classic Crawling Kingsnake

I know I just posted a Walter Trout not long ago but this is just too damn good. I'm also a big Lance Lopez fan, and with Grossi on the bass and Kenny Aronoff on drums

Think there's a new SBM album due on the 25th of this month: think that was what Kris Barras was alluding to on Faceache.
Thanks for the heads up, I will be on it like flies on a picnic. Lance has had some problems staying clean the last 2 or 3 years, maybe this is a sign that he is in a better place now

I didn't snap to it but indeed SBM did replace Lance Lopez with Kris Barris in early 2018. My son thinks Lance is still living in Nashville but we are not totally sure on this. Here is the first release from Voodoo Nation with Mr Landreth playing some tasty slide. Looks like it was mixed and produced by Fabrizio Grossi

You beat me to the title....
Amazon over here are being a bit vague on the release date, but here's the product description:-
"Voodoo Nation is the band's third studio album and fourth in total following West of Flushing, South of Frisco (2016), Californisoul (2017), live album Road Chronicles: Live (2019).
The album starts with the track "Money", which is about greed. "Greed alone is not the problem, it's greed and the lack of respect for everybody else", producer Fabrizio Grossi explains. The 8-minute "Devil at the Doorstep" features Eric Gales whose own recent album Crown was a #1 Blues Billboard hit. The song is a studio representation of what happens when they play live with Gales.
SSBM underline problems faced by musicians on "Coming Thru" and "Get It Done" - the latter features Los Angeles based virtuoso Josh Smith. "Do It Again" is another firecracker that rounds off the theme and features Ana Popovic, which is about "the happiness and blessing of being able to do what you love."
Young Harlem blues-sensation King Solomon Hicks takes on lead vocals and guitar on the call to arms "You and Me." The bands trademark soulful blues sound can be heard beautifully on "I Will Let It Go," featuring Kirk Fletcher, and the sumptuous "Is It All" featuring the legendary Joe Louis Walker, which sees him and Kris Barras trade vocals on the stunning soul ballad. The title track locks in the feeling of general discontent in society.
Supersonic Blues Machine reflect how they see the world through their lens and never far is a message of hope and the album closes with the inspirational country blues "All Our Love" featuring Blackberry Smoke's Charlie Starr."
Some big-hitters named dropped....
Ran into a woman at the show last night and she told me The Main Squeeze played at her son's wedding in Nashville, Tn. The guy's name is Bryce Fox and I checked him out. Pretty good singer.
tickets to TMS are bought. I feel like this will be insanely epic

Ian Gillan Band - Return To The Source (2022)
Basically, an independent compilation from the Talking Elephant label showcasing what Ian Gillan did in the mid 1970s, getting back into the music industry after turning his back on it.
You'd think, at first, that it's a long way from the powerhouse of Purple, but sit back and really listen and what you hear is a band every bit as skilled, but the direction is slightly different. At first described as [the dread] jazz-fusion, but deeper listening reveals driving soul-funk rhythms that cook into a backbeat that wouldn't shame Sly & The Family Stone. There is, interspersed on these tracks, some blistering guitarwork from the oft overlooked Ray Fenwick. Keyboards are handled by Colin Townes, the only member to survive IGB and right to the end of Gillan[Band] in the early 1980s before moving on to a successful career are film, Tv & theatre composer. Drums are handled by ex-Elf Mark Nauseef, who went on to work briefly with Thin Lizzy & Gary Moore. And finally, the late John Gustafson [ex-Roxy Music, amongst others] laying bass lines to die for.
This compilation is culled from the few albums made by the Ian Gillan Band, before Gillan hardened up the bands sound, and not only features studio picks such as Clear Air Turbulence and My Baby Loves but also instrumental backing tapes [from Rockfield Sessions] that really showcase how this band could cook. And while you can't escape the "purple elephant" in the room, there are 3 live numbers hanging over from Ian's [first run] days in Purple, but handled slightly differently; Child In Time featuring flute into for example.
Granted, not the stuff that would make Gillan the internationally famous & fabulously wealthy superstar he is now, but this does show that he was always more than a leather-lunged, tungsten-tonsiled screamer.

Interesting post re Ian Gillan.
I really like the Mr Universe album and got to see him live quite a few times from 79 - early 80’s.
I’ll keep an ear out for this new compilation, especially if Colin Townes is on keyboards.
