Bryan Adams - So Happy It Hurts (2022)

Holy Good Grief!!! That's something I haven't done for more than 30 years!!! Buy the latest Bryan Adams album... ( For reference, last one was 1989's  Waking Up The Neighbours.)

At least he doesn't seem to have mucked about too much with the old formula; still working with Jim Vallance and Jeff Scott applying some beef to the guitars. Don't know what's gone on in the intervening years, or whether it's to do with the Covid but can't help notice that Adams has been playing 90% on the instruments; competently, rather than his own or a studio band and it does kind of let the album down in terms of crispness in the performances of the songs. Very odd seeing Mutt Lange credited to some backing vocals and percussion and not in the production chair. At least, Adams's not trying to recapture Everything I Do, but really, John Cleese doing a spoken narration/introduction into Kick ****, which then almost tries to "kiss ****" with AC/DC's Let There Be Rock. It's as good as early stuff, no damage to the career, but pushes no boundaries.

very sad now to see Phil trying to finish his last tour and singing from a chair with a cane. I bought this album when it first came out but now I cannot remember any of the other song titles. You know I think his work was very much undervalued on A Trick of the Tail, And Then There Were Three, and also Duke. I saw them once on the Duke tour with Daryl Steurmer and Chester Thompson. Here is a classic from And Then There Three, written about the Pikes Peak gold rush that started in 1858. What a strange topic for a song coming from a band out of England

Reeth (N Yorks, UK) Memorial Hall -March 20th 2022

Bit of an expedition last night... Almost a pith helmet and baggy shorts job. Down through Durham, between the Hill of Ferry and the Field of Sedge and into barely charted N.Yorks until we made base camp in Reeth (always sounds like it should be in Scotland...) in the foothills of the Arkengarth.
Why was such a trek necessary? Well after 18 months of delays and rescheduling, it was a chance to have audience with the High Priestess of Kiki-Dee.
Actually, this was Kiki and partner/sideman/guitarist Carmelo Luggeri's 4th visit to this remote and isolated, intimate venue, but there is such a warm vibe there, it's not hard to see the attraction, even to a performer of some 50 years (is that ungallant of me to mention?). Anyway, if you're thinking the show was just an excuse for Kiki to trip down memory lane, you'd be wrong; in the first 55 minute set, no less than 3 NEW tracks from new album The Long Ride Home were featured as well as a few choice covers ranging between Everly Brothers, Kate Bush and... (big surprise) Harry Manx. And then, "that song", which to be fair, had a very different arrangement, was "put away" early on. Then there was a selection of tracks Kiki & Carmelo have recorded between them down the years. Only one slight problem for the evening was the stage lighting; good for us down front, but not so good for Carmelo on stage who could hardly see to tune his guitar or sort the looper & assorted gizmos. However, a bit of grit and ingenuity saw a standard lamp brought in to adorn the stage,
After a 20 minute break, allowing folk to dash down the town for liquid refreshment (One drawback with Reeth's Memorial Hall is NO BAR, and since The Buck Inn next door is closed, the beer dash is a bit further, though to be fair, as long as you're responsible, you can take your own in.) it was back down to business, more original tracks, Frank Sinatra and Leonard Cohen covers as well as Kiki's biggest hits, acoustically arranged. And there was plenty good chat and anecdotes in-between, touring the States in the 70s, being on Top Of The Pops and from Carmelo, quick tuition on guitar tuning between C6 and open-G.
In all, a very sort of "low-key" evening; Kiki's voice may not be as strong as in days of yore, but she's far from done and Carmelo's arrangements and guitar work were absolutely on the mark. The evening sort of varied between light Blues and Country vibe, with hints of Jazz, especially in the covers, As for the venue, well, fortunately it was a good night for travelling, otherwise pre-booking a hotel would be advised, then again, Reeth is set in some of the best walking country in the north. The venue is among the cosiest and intimate I've visited, with a warm welcome for local and stranger alike. The lack of a bar, many may see as a downside, but they seem to have an understanding with the local hostelries.
