Dan Patlansky - Shelter of Bones (2022)

Arrived late-afternoon yesterday, so this is my first chance to unleash the new album from Dan. After a morning down the Quayside, I should be chillin' and to be fair, there's a smooth ballad, Lost caressing the ears, but the previous tracks, Soul Parasite; Snake Oil City & Selfish Lover sound the perfect collision between Hendrix & SRV. And now Bad Soul is spitting a hot riff through the speakers. Now Presence is struttin' funky and Devil's Dopamine sounds like it would fit on Purple's Stormbringer while Sweet Memories are more than enough to keep Dan's Blues credentials in order.

Can't deny, Dan's pulled out another good'un; plenty of guitar chiaroscuro for anyone. Roll on April when he swings by.

In a similar vein, have an earful of Nashville-based Naked Gypsy Queens' Georgiana EP. Striving to sound like Cinderella but obviously a Tom Keifer short, but a worthy effort.

Eric Johanson - Live At DBA (New Orleans Bootleg) 2022

So, you're waiting in for an electrician to call, and Eric Johanson's Live Bootleg [double album] drops through the door... What to do Slap the discs in the player and enjoy 2 hours of the best, contemporary, swampy-Delta Blues going; that's what.

This was recorded in mid-January, for release a couple of weeks ago (I've been waiting for the post...) and from 1st note until 19 songs and 2hrs later, it was one of those nights I'd wished I'd been there. Taking their first opportunity in two years to hit the stage, Eric and his band; Will Repholz on Bass and Terry Scott Jr behind the drums were just on fire... Alternating between the Resonator and what sounded like a classic Danelectro, Eric was switching between the hypnotic and the hyper; not just on his own quality material but took Blues standards like Chuck Berry's Oh Louisiana; Son House's Dead Letter;  and Muddy Water's Champagne and Reefer back beyond their roots as well as throwing in a spirited Allman's Midnight Rider.

This is great stuff, modern, yet Delta through and through. Now excuse me while I get the Spanish moss off the light-fitting and rescue the electrician from the gators....

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

I had some good people caring for me last summer.  One was someone I've known since she was a very young girl and the other angel, a woman married to a local blues singer, Cage Willis.  You can look up his music on Google.  I think he's got a nice sound.
Some of my Bonabuddy friends have been recipients of my sometimes playlist misses, but I promised those two sweethearts I'd make them some discs, or a thumb drive this time.
Anyway one mentioned a band she likes called The Georgia Thunderbolts and I thought maybe a few here would enjoy a sample.....

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Indeed I have enjoyed him through the years, the name just didn't click with me when you posted this. He has played a lot with Ian Thornley, with or without Big Wreck. Here is Pete playing with Ian on one of the great Big Wreck songs

Stick around for the guitarist’s effects replay.  I think Tres will enjoy this and a few others….

Is this Ian the same as Ian Fletcher Thornley?  His Secrets album is one of my favorites.  Thought he sounded a lot like a young Dave Mason.
I really enjoyed that video with Pete Thorn.  Good stuff!

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

that is the same guy Curby

I keep running into new music that others have said they were looking forward to, without having listened to any of their previous songs. Elles Bailey for one and now this pops up out of nowhere about 10 minutes ago. They know where you've been, they know what you have looked at, they just know

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Marillion - An Hour Before It's Dark (2022)

Rule of thumb in spotting a "defining" album - minimalist cover with no, or hard to find title and band credit. So that one's nailed.
Second rule, if one's needed, the songs, few in number, each made of various "movements" to capture the current "zeitgeist". Again, nailed...

If you thought Marillion's best days were behind them (aside from the "Fish was best" brigade) you were dropped a big hint with 2016's f.e.a.r. album that the band were far from done, and even though they haven't released a "bad" album (O.K. This Strange Engine took a few more listens than usual) this is the album that Marillion have always threatened to make. Not just a career "high" but quite probably one of the most significant Prog albums of the last 25 years - or more.

The vocals soar, the guitars shimmer, the keys swirl and the strings swoop. There's orchestra, there's chorus, yet it never feels overblown. from the Cohen tribute The Crow and the Nightingale to the hymn to  health-workers, Care, not a note is out of place or over-played.

Kris Barras - Death Valley Paradise (2022)

You can only imagine the frustration; our hero, mid-way through a successful tour behind what's looking increasingly like a breakthrough album, and the World turns on it head..

Undaunted, Kris bided his time, as we all had to, and once there was a glimmer, took the opportunity to work jup some new material. And here's the result; 11 new and original tracks. On first run through, it's apparent that like contemporary Jack JJ Hutchinson, the "blues" tag is more or less implied (or lower-case italics, at least). Secondly, blessed [or cursed] with Bon Jovi-like pipes, Barras has managed to give us an album rich in anthemic rockers, but without the gratuitous "woah-ho's" that otherwise would rob any substance: this is the sort of area UFO ruled.

A good part of this is down to the tight band barras has got around hime, the touchstone presence of Josiah J Manning and a stampeding backline of kelpie Mckenzie & Billy Hammett. The other ace in the hole has been that Barras allowed some mates from his phone directory to add a bit spit & polish to the songs, to great effect. Three building rockers, Dead Horses, Long Gone & My Paradise give the album a powerhouse start and closer Chaos is worth the hanging round for. If you were lucky enough to get the accompanying unplugged EP though, make sure you check Wake Me When It's Over, less is definitely more in this case.

What a week this has been for new releases, in fact, what a start to the year......

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

I've been immersed in a few southern rock bands that give me hope good music still resides in this old world.  The bands I've been enjoying are Robert Jon and the Wreck, Them Dirty Roses, The Delta Sons, Switch N Whisky and especially The Georgia Thunderbolts.  I really like their Can We Get A Witness album.
I know Tres mentioned these guys earlier, but I think maybe some peeps here should check them out again.  Here's a stellar little song that Skynyrd would've been proud to share a stage with.
