Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Here is a band that came off as a huge surprise to me!

It's MAD SEASON, they were a on the tail end of the GRUNGE stuff.  HOWEVER, this guy, what a voice!  He could have done blues, had he not passed away.  This song was in a TV show, and it was at the end of a pretty moving scene, and they just let the song play.  I had never heard it, so I used Shazam to find out who and what it was.

This is the song River of Deceit  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm72DPJCX58

I bought the CD that night, and then found out there is a deluxe CD, that has a concert they did, of the whole album live (plus some other songs)

I highly recommend it, for it actually has a blues feel to it.

The other song that I really like is this one Artificial Red: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x09DgP-tr9U
here's a good LIVE version of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTh7xihAmtE

Sadly, 2 of the members died, The lead singer Layne Staley and John Saunders

Excellent disc. That was Layne's project after Alice In Chains..If ya like grunge, and are looking for something special, listen to the "Temple of the Dog" album...a real gem

Yeah, heard that one.  There is another that they did in 2015 with the Seattle symphony with all kinds of songs, and Mad Season and Temple of the Dog songs were sung, by Chris Cornell.

from the Relentless CD, one of the few more current songs that I never saw him do live

I really was waiting for the guitar to catch on fire. and the No Moshing sign is priceless, there have never been any mosh pits at any of his concerts

Voodoo Blues - Grainne Duffy (2021)
If there’s one thing that has always impressed about Grainne Duffy it’s the way her voice is an equal split of cream & caustic and this wee album showcases that to the fore. I’m so impressed that I’ll even forego my usual grumble about it only weighing in at under 32 minutes as each of the 10 songs are crisp and consise (only one exceeds 4 minutes) so much more would be pointless repartition.
The title track comes out the gates, spitting sparks in it’s tight, savage delivery and the only places this feral take on the Blues lets up is when Grainne in a more commercial frame not only matches but threatens to swamp Sheryl Crowe;not so much cop-out as crossover gold. Also worth note, the writing partnership between Grainne and husband/guitarist Paul Sherry is maturing as good as anything that’s come from Bushmills.

The Way of the Witch - Inkubus Sukkubus  (2021)
Holy Crap! No! That’s not what I think of the album: it’s what I thought when I found it was their 25th studio offering, all of which I have, plus compilation and re-issue, all signed by dear Candia & Tony…
So what does this milestone bring us? Well, in terms of style, nothing startling, but then, why change a winning formula? Their recent emphasis drifts more from the world of Nosferatu and more to the Wiccan, so laying down new, darker folk stories, with a punch. A nice mix of paces through the album, but if I had one wish for these guys, it’s that somewhere, sometime they experiment with a string quartet.
Once over they used to dispaly a “whimsical” disposition (for “g"oths - note the small “g”) in their choice of covers, or how they re-worked them, and so playing this through for the first time, Track 7 - High On the Hill got me very excited, it screamed Joy Division’s Atmosphere, but it’s not, it is an Inkies original, but all credit to Roland Link for his very Peter Hook bass-work.
I must get to see this band one day, but 3 times I have tried and three times foiled - once is bad luck, twice is coincidence; three-times is a warning….

Live In Lockdown - Erja Lyytinen (2021)
Trust the Finns - if people can’t come to the gig, bring the gig to them. Erja and band in fine form running through what would have been their 2020 tour set in a session setting. Compact stage, loads of guitars and Erja belting it out.
You can tell they are missing a real audience to play off, which makes the attempts for audience participation a little embarrassing - listen carefully in the mix and you can hear the cameramen joining in. One slight glitch in the rapidly put together DVD platter - once or twice the sound synching drifts off; doesn’t hurt, but does distract once you notice -  and I shouldn’t have mentioned it, should I?

Currently making my way through Fleetwood Mac - 1969 to 1974 (Then Play On - Heroes Are Hard To Find) box set.

As someone who missed this "gap" between Albatross and The Chain, some good, first-time listening.

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Not exactly my cup of tea but it's a good vid they put together. I sent it to my son, he will probably love it. That red Tele Thinline he is playing is what I have except that mine is all maple body and neck. His is an extra fancy version, really nice, you won't see many of those in stores if any
