Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Here is Jimmy again with the Govt Mule doing a Billy Cobham cover, just excellent all around, Jimmy is truly the king of jam. If you want to flip ahead, his solo comes in after Warren's at about 6:45

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

More Jimmy Herring for your listening pleasure, he is one hell of a guitarist imo. He is one of the very few to attempt to cover Jeff Beck, and he does so beautifully. I have heard Sophie from Wired and also Cause We've Ended as Lovers from Blow by Blow. I know, he has become a complete obsession now and I just can't get enough of his guitar virtuosity

I swear I didn't know they were going to do Within You Without You again, still it's a little different. Yeah for me vocals are highly overrated

Closing number at about 30:00 is A Day in the Life, if you don't listen to much of the rest of it then please do hear this one

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

OK I'll get off of Jimmy for a while, switch gears with some of this from years back, Robben Ford and Mike Landau. I bought the first one and liked it a lot but have never heard any of it live

The sound guys didn't do a very good job with the mixing and balance, still it's decent to me

Oli Brown - Unreleased (2020)

Oli's been looking back at some material he was working on as solo artist before he went off to scratch his Rockin' itch with the RavenEye project.  He's worked over and re-vocaled 4 tracks and Wow! Not that any of the tracks could be deemed "weak" or "filler"; Miss Leading hits like being smashed over the head with a Telecaster... And Sticks And Stones doesn't let up much either, but is more the transitional song between the Blues and Rock Oli... Coming For You is another crunchy number but Oli's voice, shed of it's youthful callow, really belts out. This isn't all a blood 'n' guts EP, In Over My Head is a very tasty acoustic ballad which bodes well for a planned acoustic album (in the pipeline).

This is a great 13 minute blast from an artist who not only lights up a room as soon as he sets foot on stage but somehow in that slim frame generates gigawatts of energy each performance.

My favorite antique store has Nina Simone playing on their turn table every time I come in. Like they know that I love her.

It reminds me about this story.  He is one of the writers I grew up on. Sad that not many people know about him.

Pretenders - Hate For Sale (2020)
Making a change from everybody hanging on to 40 year old released classics, Chrissie Hynde & The Pretenders are back, with more vim & vigour than someone just the right side of 70 deserves. And I don’t think that she and last-man-standing Martin Chambers are so much rejuvenated by the younger blood ( James Walbourne & Nick Wilkinson) as leading them on.
For their first proper band release since 2008’s Break Up The Concrete, there’s everything here that’s classic Pretenders, from the punk-ish venom to the melting ballad but without looking back with 1980’s soft-focus sheen that still marks them as very much a relevant band.
Gotta be an 85% rating, and I only got it this afternoon….

Robert Jon & The Wreck - Take Me Higher (2019)
Last Light On The Highway (2020)
The two most recent of Robert Jon’s 5 platters; both steaming hot slices of Southern Rock, slathered in whisky-soaked “Epic” soundscapes… If things get back to normality, these guys are going to be a hot (UK) ticket in 2021.

Jazz Friday with The Crusaders feat Larry Carlton (just look at that hair), Joe Sample on keyboards, Pops Popwell on bass, Nesbert (haha) Stix Hooper on drums, Wilton Felder on tenor sax. Stix wrote Never Make Your Move too Soon recorded by many including Joe B. I got to see them on the Southern Comfort tour, I think this is probably that same tour

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Took advantage recently of a clearance sale offer at Manhaton Records the other day (any 4 albums from 20 for £12 - who wouldn’t!?!).
So what did I get?

Robin Trower - Roots and Branches (2013)
                Something’s about To Change (2014)
Where Are You Going To (2016)
Thought it was about time I dipped my toes into Robin’s more current output. The first album see RT dipping back into some old standards and putting his own spin on them (which works quite well) and blending in some new originals in a similar vein. The latter two are Trower originals with that signature style and sound that fits like favourite jacket; it may not be in vogue, but it’s comfortable and you know where things are….

Steve Hill - One Man Blues Rock Band (2018)

So, despite sounding like a very crunchy, rockin’ trio, this Canadian’s Live album is exactly what it says on the tin, a One Man Band delivering some tasty Blues Rock. It’s direct, unpretentious, driving and darn tasty. That the man not only sings with such a raw, barbed-vocal style underpinned by a deliciously handled guitar, he also comes loaded with two kick drums, a hi-hat cymbal – played by virtue of the stick attached ingeniously to the machine head of his guitar – and, on occasion, an harmonica. For me, after the initial blast, the middle of the album gets a little “samey” aside from the more acoustic Tough Luck, but it does ramp up to an near epic finish, especially the Ballad of Johnny Wabo. Steve Hill did tour a couple of years back with (then label mates) King King, so hope he comes back over again sometime.
