Troy Redfern - Island (2020)

The first of what will probably be known as the "lockdown" albums, Troy's managed to sneak this out while others have new releases still on hold.

While some people have pulled up their drawbridges and other railed against the world, Troy's done what he does best, picked up his trusty ol' resonator and given it a work out that's left the paint job even more seared. From the sleazy grind of Doin' Time, through the Moorish flavoured Call To Prayer, through a thumping standard John The Revelator to the dream-like Island, Troy has delivered a comprehensive sonic postcard for these unique times.

Drew Zingg is quite the accomplished guitarist, he has played with many top acts and they in turn show up on his solo release from 2012. Hit the show more button and scroll down, some bio list and he's only 62 or so now. This one was written by Fagen & Becker for him, they never did record it

Kyle Craft - Dolls Of Highland (2016)
Kyle Craft & Showboat Honey (2019)

Think it’s fair to say that Kyle hasn’t heard of you either… These are the 1st and 3rd albums from the 31 year old native of Vidalia; Louisiana (somewhere up the Mississippi, opposite bank to Natchez), where growing up there were no passing touring bands. In-between wrestling alligators & rattlesnakes or playing football, when the music spark was ignited by a Bowie compilation found at the local K-Mart, Craft honed his guitar chops in an out-of-commission meat-freezer and launched himself on the world at the age of 15.

Penetcost - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBJf35zE7wQ

The first album, mostly self-played, has a sound and feel that owes as much to pre-Ziggy Bowie as it does to Crafts other main influence Bob Dylan yet manages not to fall into the trap of copying either. Vocally, he’s as much on his own as the two legends but there’s also that raucous & abrasive power of Steve Marriott. Most of the songs were initially written while Craft had re-located to Portland; Oregon and at a time when everything he took for granted in his life was falling apart, so making a central theme. Then he recorded the songs while on a return to Shreveport; LA. A return back to Portland saw the rough tapes refined and mixed to be a more realised performance without losing sight of the feral power. However, this is an album not for wallowing in self-pity but for picking up and moving on…

Jumping forward two years and leap-frogging a middle album, Showboat Honey not only shows a progression in Kyle’s music, but also a consolidation in a backing band, Showboat Honey; Haven Mutlz give the drums a 60s/70s fast molasses groove, blending with Billy Slater’s rolling bass; Kevin Clark bounces between piano and mellotron while Ben Steinmetz gives the songs depth with organ parts; all this is sewn together with guitar electricity from Jeremy Kale. Not that Craft isn’t beyond doing his own thing on several songs, giving the album a slight schizoid feel, which is also due to the album being condensed from 2 albums worth of material that just didn’t hang on their own.

This is a much more mature album than Dolls, but not a million miles away; contemplative yet still restless. At times, the soundscape owes more to Leon Russell & Patty Smith (if ever such a union took place…?). Meanwhile, at the heart remains the tongue-in-cheek phantasmagoria created by Craft’s lyrics.

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

One of the longer songs on any of their releases, right up there with Xanadu. This is one of the more obscure songs on Moving Pictures, but I love it dearly because it shows off Neil's drumming expertise. I do appreciate the talents of Keith Moon and John Bonham and others, but this guy to me will always be on top of the list of great rock drummers

Victor Wainwright & The Train - ST (2018)

One of the more recent additions to the RUF alumni, this is the Georgia-born, Grammy nominated piano-pounding Wainwright’s open shot for RUF, and it’s a thumper. Raucus boogie-woogie, fusing the likes of Dr John & Fats Domino with a flash of Tony Ashton and even a hint of Floyd Cramer (listen to track 9, Boogie Depression and tell me I’m dreaming…) There’s enough 6-string action on tracks like Sunshine; Righteous and the BB King salute Thank You Lucille, but this is a keyboard players album and Wow, these keys jump. This is like having a Po’ Boy sandwich crammed in each ear, that’s why I’ve got crawfish legs on my shoulders….

The backing band is a pretty formidable set; Train conductor Billy Dean behind the drums; Terrence “sweet tea” Grayson who used to play bass for Michael Burks; Pat Harrington providing youthful flash on guitar; Mark Earley on sax; Doug Woolverton on trumpet & Dave Gross on 2nd guitar and plugging what few gaps there are in the sound.

There’s a 2nd album, Memphis Loud, just released; from what I’ve heard preview, hope you like Red Beans & Rice…

new stuff from Walter Trout but it won't be released until Aug 28, here is a taste and teaser for the rest of it. I will have to buy it. I saw him for the first time at the Caverns in Pelham TN with Eric Gales, he put on a tremendous show and then also played a couple of songs with Eric to end

some 45 years later Neil is finally releasing Homegrown, it was supposed to come out after Harvest but he shelved it for whatever reason. So "new" music it is not, but I will buy it in a heart(of gold)beat

Joe mailed out a song yesterday by Savoy Brown from 1969. I liked it and found a live, slightly jazzier version from 2011

Victor Wainwright & The Train - Memphis Loud (2020)

Just got this thriugh the post a couple of hours ago, and regardless how well-recieved their previous album was (Grammy nominated), after one play, I think I’ve just heard what will be my album of 2020.

This is more of a road? rail? river? journey of piano-driven Blues from Victor & the band that seems to explore more of the side-streams and confluences along the Mississippi and feeding rivers; from the pounding piano boogie of Mississippi and Walk the Walk to the almost understated incessent driving Chicago rhythm of Golden Mile.. There’s a 4 track build to the first ballad, and what a song it is, Disappear, which just wrings out the emotions without getting over-done. And this is a feat matched again on the closer, Reconcile.

Not only does this whole album hang together tighter than the joints in a Jim Beam barrel, it has that same smoky, smooth edge and kick too. These guys aren’t out to re-invent the wheel, but they’ve cleaned up the chrome and greased the bearings…it’s not showroom perfect, but you know, it’s exactly right.

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

I never was a big Meat Loaf fan, but this live show in Sidney is really good. I could not stop watching it, the whole band is great............... Patti Russo on backing vocals and Ginny Luke on violin, both were tremendous and added so much to the overall sound. It played on the AXS channel
