Topic: Cradle rock & Seagull

What first got me interested in Joe's music was when i heard his excellent version of cradle
rock by the late great Rory Gallagher, since the 70,s i have been a fan of Rory, I also think
Joe does a great version of Bad Company's Seagull. What do others think of these two covers?

I love Joe's version of Cradle Rock. Close pick between Joe's version and Rory's, both are awesome.
I definitely like Joe's version of Seagull better than the original. IMO, Joe's covers are always as good or better than the originals.

Re: Cradle rock & Seagull

I'm a huge fan of Paul Rogers material and love it when Joe covers similar material, especially the Kossoff inspired Another Kind of Love. Seagull is a brilliant song, and Joe's version improves on the original. But if anyone has happened to hear Paul Rogers latest tour album, there's an acoustic Seagull at the end that is just amazing.

Re: Cradle rock & Seagull

Rory's Rory and Joe is Joe. Both are great, and I have no doubt Rory would approve of Joe's version(s). One of the nicest, down to earth people in the biz one could hope to meet. (Sound familiar?)

The version of "Seagull" on 'Sloe Gin' far surpasses the original in my opinion though.

Re: Cradle rock & Seagull

I always thought Rory Gallagher's vocals were not up to snuff or just not "something" enough on Cradle Rock.  While Rogers vocals were great on Seagull, the simple (though enchanting) guitar left me disappointed compared to the balance of the Bad Co. album.  Joe's Cradle Rock has better vocalization & the slide playing (especially on A New Day Yesterday Live) takes it to a very happy place for me...On Seagull, the vocals of Joe are excellent, though I cannot say surpassing Paul Rodgers, I also cannot say they are not any poorer, perhaps just not having the depth in the overtones. But otherwise, all things considered, Joe's version totally blows the the poor old 'Gull out of the sky.  I said it in my first review, it is what the Bad Co. version SHOULD have been, or from where's Joe's success with his version stands now, COULD have been.

Re: Cradle rock & Seagull

I prefer Bad Co's version of "Seagull".  It was nice that Joe did it.

Bad Co. did it exactly the way it should be done.  Proof is in the pudding.   Bad Company's is a classic,  Joe's version is not, it's just a regular song.  There is an inner soul feeling in how Paul Rodgers composed it.  A reflection in both lyrics and music.   Paul Rodgers vocalizing his reflection is perfection.

I would have preferred Joe doing much more with that song.  I don't think it was brought to it's full potential Joe-style.  And in my opinion, his vocals could have been better.  They weren't his best vocals.

And Joe's vocals are not in the same league as Paul Rodgers just like Paul Rodgers' guitar playing is not in Joe's league.  Just a reality-check.

Re: Cradle rock & Seagull

Joe's version of Cradle Rock is amazing, great way to start a show. I am a huge Rory fan but I have to say Joe nails this one. He makes it his own like Hendrix did with Watchtower. Joe is a master at covering tunes but I have to agree with the Rivercat about seagull, not bad but nothing special.

Re: Cradle rock & Seagull

My opinion by the way is that Joe's Cradle rock is better than Rory's but I prefer Bad company's seagull.

There is only one reality. The Truth. Sometimes thoughts get in the way of the truth.

Oh, I get it! What River Cat really meant was on "Opinion check". In which case, my reply would have been "not my opinion"

Well, if you think Paul Rodgers is as great a guitarist as Joe, I'll go with the flow.
Just Kidding wink

I did mean reality, technically better vocalist.   I can't think of anyone in rock music who does better vocal runs(melisma).  There could be, but I think that's his gift as well as his tone.

Not trying to take anything away from Joe, cause I think he is extremely talented all around.  I love his vocals on "The River" that is partly why it's my favorite song of his.

Just giving people some truth(Like Reverend Paul said) to work with.

Re: Cradle rock & Seagull

Reverend Paul,

I don't know if you have it, but I highly recommend Paul's "Muddy Water Blues" CD.
Lot's of great guitarists on that album, such as Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck, Trevor Rabin of YES, Neal Schon of Journey and a number of others.  A must have for any Paul Rodgers fan.  And I hope you have his Free Catalog with Paul Kosoff smile

If you like Paul Rodgers, you might want to check out Steve Marriott of the Small Faces and Humble Pie.

I'm glad Joe did "Cradle Rock" and "Seagull" because it shows people some of his influences and will get people to look into people or bands they might not ever heard of.  It is a great musical history exploration

No problem. The original post asked what other people thought of those two covers. I've heard both versions of Cradle Rock numerous times over the last year. I had to go back and listen to the original Seagull. Personally, I like Joe's version better. I have nothing against Paul Rodgers and have been a fan of Free and Bad Co. both.
Musical tastes vary a great deal, which is a good thing. Otherwise we'd all be listening to the same bands playing the same music.
