Greta Van Fleet - Black Smoke Rising EP

Otherwise known as the 3 Kiszka brothers plus Danny Wagner; the name comes (with blessing) from a resident of their hometown, Frankenmuth, MI.

If there was a good market in Michigan area for an early Led Zepp tribute band, then these lads have it nailed. However, with an average of 19 I doubt they’ll sit back for an easy ride; they’re going to work; but there’s no escaping this easy comparison.

So, who are they? Well fist off with have “Franken-mouth” Josh Kiszka who’s soaring Plant like vocals have the power of things heard more often in rainforest canopies. Teaming up with Josh is his “Page”, guitar slinging twin brother Jake, already a master of the riff. Brother number 3 and the younger of the trio, Sam follows up on Bass. Completing the quartet is drummer Danny Wagner; maybe a little more Alex Van Halen than John Bonham, but hey, still a worthy comparison.

Of the 4 tracks presented here; Highway Tune is certainly the most Zeppelin, pounding along.

Close behind though, Safari Song opens up a bit more while Flower Power pulls it back a bit - maybe their Zeppelin 3? The final track, Black Smoke Rising is a more modern looking, straight forward rock number,

A very decent, mature, rocking release then: of the 16 minutes or song, there’s only a couple of small snatches where the youth in Josh’s voice comes through and they do need to focus more the power without compromising the edge. If they veer from the Blues, then maybe worth their while in exploring early stuff of one of the older, best ever Zepp sound-a-likes, Diamond Head: Brian Tatler had the riffs, and Sean Harris had a similarly rangy & powerful voice. Otherwise, an enjoyable EP and apparently there’s a couple more to follow as well as an earlier one that’s as rare as chicken-teeth to get hold of.

Bernie Marsden - Big Boy Blue (re-issue)

STOP Right there. Take those other purchases out of your pending Amazon basket. What you are looking at here is probably the best Blues album you will hear this year. O.K. there's no belting, gravelly voices that make statues wince nor are there any wild, screaming guitars or fret burning runs at breakneck speed.

This is an album where the feel and tone is the most important, and boy, what tone. From a B.B. King Big band style to the more intimate roots Bernie has captured pure essence in these sessions, and the musicians he has had around them were not only of the same mind, but at the top of their game. When you listen to the Phil Wiggins' Harmonica led tracks or the acoustic numbers you would think you were right there in the room; the mix is so good you wouldn't believe it's ben through a load of technology to get to your ears - only the heat and the smell of warmed valves from the old amp is missing.

It's unfair to single out any one of the musicians Bernie worked with on this album, but special mention must be made of Marsha Raven; her vocals on George Jackson's Downhome Blues; Peter Green's Loved Another Woman and Bernie's own Place In My Heart; simply inspired.

As for the man himself; awesome. There is no retreating behind the Loud pedal here, Bernie plays it as it should be: he captures the tone and style of BB King then Peter Green or Elmore James and nods to Billy Gibbons without slavish copying. Sure his own style shines through, there are snatches of Whitesnake maybe could have been, but nothing is over done. Indeed, several tracks Bernie is happy to sit back, as if guesting on his own album, happy to let the other guys do their magic; to just be a thread through it all - a carbon fibre thread.....

This style Blues may not be to everyone's taste I'll grant; but rarely will you hear it done so well. Even the bonus disc if you're fortunate enough to get the 2 disc edition, where some of these tracks are in alternate or demo form, is a worthy listen.

Andy Twyman - Live

Whaddya get, if you cross Muddy Waters with Monty Python? Hmm that’s a head-scratcher to mull over a pot noodle?

Answer:- Andy Twyman. A one-man-band force of nature who maybe upsets the “Blues Police” by putting humour into the Blues. A 21st Century Neil Innes? Well, maybe more Eric Idle.. Certainly seems to have a thing about chickens and food, so don’t tell him chickens are food or that’s a third of his material gone. Putting the comedy aside though, the lad knows his stuff and can pull in material ranging from John Lee Hooker to The Cramps and though still only in his mid-20s, he’s worked pubs & clubs half his life.

There are echoes here of how the likes of Jasper Carrott, Mike Harding etc started out, maybe missing the patter, but the funniest I’ve heard since Jon Benns. One things for sure, should the comedy not take, there is a cracking musician here. Now, where’s that panda….

Digital copies out now Mike - only 10 songs, 34 minutes but it is fantastic. Totally different from his other ones and his vocals are so much better - you will hear for yourself.

Ian Thornley is just a beast on vocals, and damn good on guitar as well. He may remind you a little of Chris Cornell
