Re: What song are you listening to right now?

This one’s a bit of a “blast from the past”; 3 newly remastered albums; Katharsis; Earmeal & Presens by Sweden’s Janne Schaffer.

Who he? Well, keep off the Google and I’ll tell you later. First off though, these aren’t Blues albums, they’re Fusion, or “when prog met jazz”, but don’t let that put you off; the guitar work over these three albums, recorded between 1976 and 1978 is as good as anything by Jeff Beck and as intense as Santana in the same era. To some ears, they may remind you of Roy Buchanan or Al Di Meola.

Katharsis & Earmeal (whole albums) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wI0rBFBhgMQ

As to the “who he?” tease; in the 1970’s Janne was Northern Europe’s top guitar session guy and appeared on something like 50 of a certain band’s recordings, the most outstanding appearances being:-

As an aside, these are new (re)releases from BGO Records, and I’d recommend you check their website catalogue as there are many, many gems in there.

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

Some more "thinking man's boogie" if anyone finds "fusion" distasteful.

Dixie Dregs 3 Arista albums; Dregs of The Earth; Unsung Heroes & Industry Standard: their last 3 albums (recorded 1980 -82) before the disbanded for a decade.

Dregs of The Earth was a Grammy winner (Rock Instrumental performance) and Industry Standard was nominated. These showcase not only what a phenomenal guitarist pre-Deep Purple Steve Morse was, what great musicians bassist Andy West, violinist Allen Sloan (Sloanov), drummer Rod Morgenstein and keyboard/sax T. Lavitz were when all combined.

Here's a live take from 1981, Mark O'Connor takes over on violin:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rkNYcmxKNA

Re: What song are you listening to right now?

thanks Mike, made my day. I saw them in concert here in Birmingham (US) in the early 70s, and then saw Morse on tour with Kansas in '87 or '88............ just a fantastic group of guys .......... Mark is a very acceptable sub for Dr Sloan, Allen finally retired from his practice in South Carolina and moved to Florida I think. Thanks for posting this, afixin to give it a listen
