Topic: The Brew

I mentioned these guys yesterday on another thread thinking they must've been bandied last year for their monumental A Million Dead Stars album, but I checked and there's nothing here.  I'm somewhat surprised since this album may be the best blues rock album I've listened to period.  Watching their Rockpalast vids reminded me of watching Joe years ago and really listening to the album I'm gobsmacked at how polished Jason Barwick is on guitar.  The kid's also a helluva singer.  The only fly in the ointment is the drummer's Dad playing in the band.  He's a good bass player, but a marginal singer at best.  I think a younger replacement would widen their audience.
There's some serious Zeppelin sound in their songs, but none of the Plant screaming.  "A Smile To Lift the Doubt" with the the violin bow literally gives me chills.
Some videos....

http://youtu.be/1_d4kW9C1mo  Did I forget to mention the drummer?  Bout as good as the guitarist.

Re: The Brew

Still don't know whether it's a must see band for me.

Here's a link to the Rockpalast concert 2009:
http://www.wdr.de/tv/rockpalast/extra/v … e_brew.jsp

One thing is sure they are playing bigger and bigger venues in Germany.
A few month ago they were support band of Uriah Heep and Nazareth.
In fall they'll play The Zeche Bochum, that's where I saw Joe in 2008 first time.
Wonder whether it will be a sold out gig. That would mean about 1000 concertgoers.

Re: The Brew

I´m sure that we have discussed them here.??? Two days ago I saw them opening for ZZ Top: unfortunately their sound balance was so bad that I´ve heard mainly bass and drums. But I saw them already last year opening for Joe where people liked them very much. I think they are playing already their second German tour these days.

Eva,

As much as you've raved about Ryan and Henrik I would've thought this band would be right in your orbit.  From experience I've heard some bad mixes for warm-up bands, but their album clearly shows where they're heading.  Oddly their first album doesn't do much for me.  It's still early, but I'd have to say AMDS is the best thing rockwise I've heard this year and maybe in twenty years.

I really liked the Rockpalast vids, KAM's my favorite!  Also liked the instrumental A Smile to Lift the Doubt.  Agree about the bass player/vocalist, his vocals take away a lot.  The lead guitarist is awesome on guitar and vocals.  I'll be purchasing some of their music, thanks Curby.

Re: The Brew

Agree that they are good, less the bassist. I don't know if the pogo stick antics appeal though. roll I'll check them out more.

Re: The Brew

The drum vid - it somehow didn't get on my above list.  I'm including it here.  Tell me this kid couldn't play for anybody and John Bonham would be pleased.  I agree about the bassist being an odd addition.  Tim Smith is a former member of Uriah Heep as well as the drummer's (Kurtis) father.  He is not a good singer, but he's a decent bassist imo.  Thanks Eva for the Rockpalast vids.  Are they available on a DVD?

Re: The Brew

really a "must not have" band for me. i was more than happy when they quit after opening for zz-top. just a lot of noise and artistic. no thank you

Re: The Brew

Curby, I have the Rockpalast show on DVD. If you send me your adress I'll send you a copy. I recorded it from TV. Was at that show myself, Joe and Lance Lopez where there as well.
I bought their DVD The Brew - Live in Belgium" after the show and they signed it too. Maybe you can buy that DVD somewhere"else.
Very nice people.

Sorry Andre, but I somehow missed your kind offer.  If it's still open I'll certainly accept.

The Brew's new album, The Third Floor, came out today.  I just started listening to it and will give a fuller review later.  What I've listened to so far though is real good blues rock.

Re: The Brew

Early next year, the guys are doing a handful of gigs round the UK;  3 up so far, maybe more to come:-

Thu 14th Mar 2013    The Waterfront, Norwich
Sat 16th Mar 2013    The Piper Club, Hull
Sun 17th Mar 2013   Manchester Academy

Re: The Brew

Great band and worth going to watch if you can. I saw them over in Holland a couple of years ago and really enjoyed the show. They seem to do more gigs in Europe than in the UK.

Bought their Spirit 66-Dvd too and also the Luna Lunera-Dvd but unfortunately both are hard to get!
Have also both Rockpalast-shows and the Tonträger-show on Dvd.

They are live much better than on Cd!

I would love to see them live again, but no dates near Vienna...

Re: The Brew

Hartlepool Belle Vue - 3/5/14

Can’t believe it took a friend from Indiana to tell me about this band from “down the road” in Grimsby, but what a favour he did me. Thing is, its been a couple of years since The Brew looked toward their homeland after carving a successful name for themselves throughout Europe. So, for their first appearance in Hartlepool for several years, there was a palpable “buzz” in the Belle Vue which was stoked up fine style by Albany Down.

The Brew took to the stage with all the subtlety of a bulldog to the groin; and for the next 90+ minutes the gripped the audience in similar bulldog fashion. Jason Barwick bouncing round the stage like Spring-heeled Jack while his foil, Kurtis Smith hammered his kit as if it was leaping up to attack him. Tim Smith on bass matching these 2 dynamos for sheer energy. These guys could have powered their own light and p.a. with the energy they were giving off.

From the opening volley, to the dying note of Million Dead Stars, these guys rocked Hartlepool like it was 1971, rooted in Classic rock, unashamedly nodding toward the Led Zeppelin but not mere “Led Clones”. Control, the new album was richly picked, with Mute & Fast Forward standing out, and well mixed with slightly old material, especially the biting Every Gig Has A Neighbour.

Though not a covers band, for their first proper UK tour in 6 years they did fall back on a few well-chosen and well placed covers, Jason soaring on a dynamic Little Wing, then closing the set, Kurtis’ drum solo fianale morphed into Moby Dick, and why not? The last drummer I saw of that kind of power and delivery, his surname was Bonham. With the Zepp out the bag, Whole Lotta Love made an explosive encore, but as the dying note was about to fade out, Jason picked up the guitar and hammered into a very cheeky Silver Machine.

So, anyone thinking about grabbing a dynamic young guitarist and drummer and setting up a power-trio, based in 70s rock and more than a nod to Zepp; I wouldn’t bother; we’ve had one all along; the neighbours have just sent it back over.

Curby - if you're looking in: if you haven't already got it, can't rate The Brew's Control album highly enough, tremendous stuff.

Re: The Brew

Kinda a post for "What Song are you listing to now?" Thread ...

Dusted off Brew's album Control from 2014 (not much dust on it) to spin at work today ... here is Play from the album ... don't know why I selected it as my song link ... guess cause it touches on wanting to just play music (and I think it has a bit more mainstream sound than some of their other songs ... which really cook ... especially on some of their older releases) ...  the album playlist should show up on the link as well you're inclined to hit up a couple of songs.  (#2 Eject and #3 Mute ...)

Play: https://youtu.be/sdzwZib89Bs?list=PLSX2 … KJyXBLb_zv

Been waiting for these guys to come to the US for a few years.  (Can't be having drummer's father as the base player turning promoter's off ... as seeming "gimmicky" ?? ... I know there are many issues involved with crossing the Pond with a Tour.)

Thanks to BansheeUK and retlawv for sharing reviews, photos and videos in other Threads ... enjoyed them.
