Hartlepool Belle Vue - 3/5/14
Can’t believe it took a friend from Indiana to tell me about this band from “down the road” in Grimsby, but what a favour he did me. Thing is, its been a couple of years since The Brew looked toward their homeland after carving a successful name for themselves throughout Europe. So, for their first appearance in Hartlepool for several years, there was a palpable “buzz” in the Belle Vue which was stoked up fine style by Albany Down.
The Brew took to the stage with all the subtlety of a bulldog to the groin; and for the next 90+ minutes the gripped the audience in similar bulldog fashion. Jason Barwick bouncing round the stage like Spring-heeled Jack while his foil, Kurtis Smith hammered his kit as if it was leaping up to attack him. Tim Smith on bass matching these 2 dynamos for sheer energy. These guys could have powered their own light and p.a. with the energy they were giving off.
From the opening volley, to the dying note of Million Dead Stars, these guys rocked Hartlepool like it was 1971, rooted in Classic rock, unashamedly nodding toward the Led Zeppelin but not mere “Led Clones”. Control, the new album was richly picked, with Mute & Fast Forward standing out, and well mixed with slightly old material, especially the biting Every Gig Has A Neighbour.
Though not a covers band, for their first proper UK tour in 6 years they did fall back on a few well-chosen and well placed covers, Jason soaring on a dynamic Little Wing, then closing the set, Kurtis’ drum solo fianale morphed into Moby Dick, and why not? The last drummer I saw of that kind of power and delivery, his surname was Bonham. With the Zepp out the bag, Whole Lotta Love made an explosive encore, but as the dying note was about to fade out, Jason picked up the guitar and hammered into a very cheeky Silver Machine.
So, anyone thinking about grabbing a dynamic young guitarist and drummer and setting up a power-trio, based in 70s rock and more than a nod to Zepp; I wouldn’t bother; we’ve had one all along; the neighbours have just sent it back over.
Curby - if you're looking in: if you haven't already got it, can't rate The Brew's Control album highly enough, tremendous stuff.

Give back the lemons. Why were the lemons free? What's wrong with the lemons?
