Topic: Mike Zito

Heard about Mike Zito last week from an English friend and couldn't believe there was someone this good so close to my hometown that I didn't know about.  Thanks Rockola for the excellent shout  His album Today is an extraordinary album and definitely worth a listen.  Great guitarist and even better singer.

Re: Mike Zito

Well here's an old post that should never have disappeared without a trace.

I've been a fan of Mike Zito for a couple of years, his Pearl River album is a great blues rock album.

I've just though got his new album Greyhound, which is produced by producer/second guitarist/backing vocalist Anders Osbourne and it's a great collection of rootsy southern based rock, which has potential for real crossover. Strong guitar playing, fine vocals and most important very good songs.

Here's a video of the title track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QF0PbXuMhLA

Any other Mike Zito fans out there?

Me.
He played with Ana Popovic this year in Schöppingen.
Actually I wished to see Mike Zito play and sing more. But he was only for a few songs on stage. Enjoyed it but it was tooooo short.
A concert of Mike Zito is on my wishlist.
And his album "Pearl River" is great.

Singing to the choir here..... Greyhound's a bit of a slower burner for me than Pearl River, but still a fine album. If you haven't already, check out the Superman album. Agree with you in every other respect.

Re: Mike Zito

really enjoying listening to Mike's new album

Re: Mike Zito

Real nice guy as well as a great player. Got to meet him last year @ an RSB gig in Folsom, Ca. He laid a few of his different picks on me and even had to dig through his gig bags to find them after I told him it wasn't a big deal, but that's what I mean by real nice guy. Love his slide work and the way he and Devon Allman play off each other. He recently hired a friend of mine, Scot Sutherland, to play bass for him in his band The Wheel who recorded Gone To Texas with Mike. Had to ask when we met, but no relation to Barry Zito. Mike has a blog called A Man In Recovery which is very insightful of the change he's made in his life.

Re: Mike Zito

Don't care if I have already posted this - an album this darn good is worth shouting about!

I been a fan Mike’s since “Pearl River” and got his back-catalogue in short order; for me he’s the backbone in Royal Southern Brotherhood, but I think that this is his best album yet, with both his vocals and his guitar playing being very self-assured and in the zone. In true Blues fashion; a creative highpoint about his life’s low point.

It’s this chronicle, at times as raw as an open wound or as desolate as the open desert to the uplifting promise of redemption, just falling short or rejoicing that is the backdrop of variety here, from the restrained funk of Don’t Break A Leg to the soul ballad “Take it easy”, from acoustic slide blues “Death Row” to the eerie psychedelic blues of “Voices in Dallas” telling of Mike’s problems with drugs. No, life may be good at the moment, but you get the impression that Mike Z knows how fragile a thing it is concluding with Willie Johnson’s Let Your Light Shine On Me.

Mike’s put together an awesome band ‘The Wheel’ over the years, featuring Rob Lee on drums and Scot Sutherland on bass and the record also features Jimmy Carpenter on sax, Lewis Stephens on keys and Susan Cowsill on backup vocals. Delbert McClinton guests on the honky tonk blues “The Road Never Ends,” adding vocals and harmonica, while on “Rainbow Bridge” Sonny Landreth adds his distinctive electric slide guitar. RSB buddies Cyril Neville and Devon Allman contribute on a track each; I Never Knew A Hurricane and The Road Never Ends, respectively.

However, Mike’s gritty vocals and biting guitar and his open, honest but never mawkish lyrics make this a Blues album for the 21st century, it has the hallmarks of being a classic, in every sense.

Wow ...... another CD to buy thanks to the page

Many thanks for the tip

Re: Mike Zito

I saw Mike Zito for the first time this past weekend at the Western Maryland Blues Fest. Really enjoyed watching him. He's got a certain charisma about him, a confidence that he exudes in his singing and playing and I can see why a friend of mine is so into him. She is a fellow videographer and has been filming him for years. The saxophonist, Jimmy Carpenter is pretty amazing and of course his bassist, Scot Sutherland is the epitome of cool. Wish his set hadn't been cut short by a storm that came through. Would have been nice to have heard the whole thing.

Re: Mike Zito

Oh man! I’ve wanted to see this guy since Greenose & Curby first brought him to my attention about the time Pearl River was released. First chance I had was when Mike came round as part of Royal Southern Brotherhood, and just that taste, I knew he’d be something special in his own right.

Granted last year, he did come round the UK with is band, The Wheel, but not in these parts, so as soon as I saw that Linda V had him booked for The Cluny, nothing was going to stand in my way. With this sort of expectation, you’d usually worry whether or not the gig would live up to expectations; no such qualms here, it blew them out the water. Pearl River met River Tyne…..

Mike’s got a stompin’ new album out, and the show opened with the title track, Keep Coming Back, a real rocker of a number that had a full Cluny bouncing from the get-go, and the pace hardly relented from then on to the main set end. Several new numbers mixed well with tracks from Gone To Texas, the afore mentioned Pearl River which got a huge ovation and even as far back as Superman album. Best cover of the night was Bob Segar’s ol rocker Get Out of Denver.

After the main set closed, The Cluny just erupted till Mike & the Band came back on and announced 3 more songs, the first 2 just ripped the place apart. Poor Mike’s tour manager, stood in the middle of the room trying to signal that the time was past curfew, just before the final number, but it would have taken a very brave man to have puled the plug - the audience were rocking, and the band was cookin’.

Have to give big credit to the band too, The Wheel just doesn’t do them full service; the way they played and how tight they were, they should be known as the Creedence Silverwater Bullet Band. Jimmy Carpenter on sax & vocals, keeping rhythm & pace with Mike’s guitar; Scott Sutherland, looking impassive but swinging a thunderous bass and Rob Lee driving the drums like a freight train; just awesome.

Hope you had a great night up in Edinburgh, Duncan - all I can say is that Mike Zito + The Cluny + Friday Night is a combination that won't be bettered for a long while.

Re: Mike Zito

We saw Mike Zito at the Western Maryland Blues Fest this past weekend. Always enjoy his set. He has such a great personality and always seems to be enjoying himself. He had his friends Anthony Rosano and Albert Castiglia join him on a couple of songs. Such a fun time getting to see them play together.

Re: Mike Zito

1/4/17  Hartlepool Supporters Club

Wow - East Texas met East Durham on Saturday night when Mike Zito breezed into Hartlepool. Yeah, I know: when I first saw it listed I though Mike Zito, Hartlepool, April 1st….. Well, you’d have been a fool if you missed it, and judging by the packed house at the Supporters Club, there aren’t many fools in Hartlepool.

Opener for the night was Darlington’s Alex Fawcett Band who played a fine rocking set; close your eyes and you’d swear it was a young Nimmo on stage. Alex is building a lot of respect in the region, and this showing only enhances that. Great showing by Alex, Jack on keys, Phil on bass & Robin on drums. Next step would be to get some dates out the region.

No offence to Alex though, when Mike Zito took the stage, it was like comparing a Ford Capri with a Ford Mustang. Mike has a blistering new album, Make Blues Not War, and its like that’s his new mission statement. Highway Mama & Wasted Time got the momentum going and from there, Mike, Matthew Johnson on Bass and (Scott Gorham look-a-like) Handsome Bob Bridges on Bass gave it their all, and gave Hartlepool one Hell of a taste of real Texas Blues. The Pearl River album was plundered, as was Mike’s most recent releases, Gone To Texas and Keep Coming Back.

The show was split over two sets; not surprising after the powerhouse of Crazy Legs; the second set getting off to a “mellower” start before Mike generously invited Alex Fawcett on stage, and the two combined seamlessly of 3 songs, trading licks. Now we were well into party mood, right till the end. A real, 5Star night.

Interestingly, promoters from Sedgefield, Saltburn and Darlington clubs were in, picking their jaws off the floor, so looks like Mike’s next tour could be a World tour of Durham & N. Yorks. (Mike’s next stop was Harrogate…).

Re: Mike Zito

Had the opportunity to catch Mike Zito last night at a small club in Dallas (The Kessler Theater).  Wasn't really familiar with his music, but my wife is out of town and thought what the heck, I got nothin better to do on a Friday night.  His vehicle got broken into the night before in Houston and some of his gear got stolen so I was managing my expectations about the first show with some new pedals, etc.

Wow, such a professional.  Such a fantastic player.  Such a great singer.  I'm so glad I made the decision to go.  Great band as well.
