Oh man! I’ve wanted to see this guy since Greenose & Curby first brought him to my attention about the time Pearl River was released. First chance I had was when Mike came round as part of Royal Southern Brotherhood, and just that taste, I knew he’d be something special in his own right.
Granted last year, he did come round the UK with is band, The Wheel, but not in these parts, so as soon as I saw that Linda V had him booked for The Cluny, nothing was going to stand in my way. With this sort of expectation, you’d usually worry whether or not the gig would live up to expectations; no such qualms here, it blew them out the water. Pearl River met River Tyne…..
Mike’s got a stompin’ new album out, and the show opened with the title track, Keep Coming Back, a real rocker of a number that had a full Cluny bouncing from the get-go, and the pace hardly relented from then on to the main set end. Several new numbers mixed well with tracks from Gone To Texas, the afore mentioned Pearl River which got a huge ovation and even as far back as Superman album. Best cover of the night was Bob Segar’s ol rocker Get Out of Denver.
After the main set closed, The Cluny just erupted till Mike & the Band came back on and announced 3 more songs, the first 2 just ripped the place apart. Poor Mike’s tour manager, stood in the middle of the room trying to signal that the time was past curfew, just before the final number, but it would have taken a very brave man to have puled the plug - the audience were rocking, and the band was cookin’.
Have to give big credit to the band too, The Wheel just doesn’t do them full service; the way they played and how tight they were, they should be known as the Creedence Silverwater Bullet Band. Jimmy Carpenter on sax & vocals, keeping rhythm & pace with Mike’s guitar; Scott Sutherland, looking impassive but swinging a thunderous bass and Rob Lee driving the drums like a freight train; just awesome.
Hope you had a great night up in Edinburgh, Duncan - all I can say is that Mike Zito + The Cluny + Friday Night is a combination that won't be bettered for a long while.
