With that being said, I too have a JB Goldtop  I am wanting signed at my next M/G and I have a dilemma concerning just where I want the autograph. I know Joe signs the back of the headstock or the pick guard so the guitar can still be played but I don't play, not a note, and the purpose of my buying this guitar was to display alongside Carmelita. I am wanting it signed on the main body of the guitar so as to get a larger, more complete signature. I am told this renders the guitar unplayable due to possible damage to the signature but it very likely will never be played unless I take up the guitar. Needing guidance here, this is killing me...

back of the headstock

I agree with Ron 100%, Back of the headstock is most the appropriate location. Look at Rons Avatar, thats a Skinner, my Avatar is my Goldtop which is also signed on the back of the headstock.

I play guitar and collect them.  I've got signed autographs from Kiss, shinedown, ace frehley, etc. I personaly don't play my signed guitars personally.  I get all the autographs on the front of the body so I can display them in cases made of wood and glass.  I always have the bands personalize it to me, with small inspirational sayings like : to Brian keep rocking, or whatever.  If he signs the bsxk of the headstock that's great, but it will never be seen.  If you do not play, I would get him to sign the body and personalize it to you.  That's what I'm doing.  I'm never going to sell my GT, just retire it with his signature on it.  I am also going to bring my Pelham Blue and have him sign the back of the headstock because I do still play it, but I just may have him sign the body too and retire it.  I have 14 others I can still play!  Plus, if you get him to personalize it for you, no one can ever say, "you just bought that off ebay!
If it were me, and I had a GT that I don't play at all, I'd definitely get him sign the body of the guitar.  It makes for a better display peice and you wouldn't have to take it out of a wall hanger, case to enjoy it!  Remember, once the meet and greet is done it's done.  Do what your heart tells you and not other people. The meet and greet is your day to spend and celebrate with Joe. Leave out of there with no regrets!

I've seen those cases but I have been looking at something that makes it appear the guitar is floating on the wall, a Woody's hanger that uses the strap pegs as mounts:

This would eliminate stress on the neck and the guitar can be removed easily.

Re: Newbie Meetand greet question

my two cents..
never say that you will never sell or do anything because as much as we do not want it things change. So if you were to decide to ever sell one of your guitars that was signed on the front and personalized you will not get as much $$. People do not want to purchase a guitar that was signed to someone else and also on the front. my two cents. And yes there are always exceptions
Sounds like you have a great collection

Re: Newbie Meetand greet question

As usual, Ron has made some very good points. While its up to you where you have it signed, I would urge you to consider the back of the headstock or on the pickguard.

Re: Newbie Meetand greet question

Thanks to all who have given suggestions, I really appreciate the feedback. I really wanted a full signature and that is why I wanted the body but I am seriously considering the pick guard. Who knows, maybe I will learn to play after all.

Re: Newbie Meetand greet question

I got mine signed at the back of the headstock when I met Joe.  Personally I don't like signature on the front - I like them fairly invisible and in areas that are not touched when playing.

On my second M&G, I didn't bring my guitar with me, but there was another guy there with an absolutely BEAUTIFUL R9 Les Paul.  Total stunner.

The guy asked Joe to sign it on the front, across the body.  Joe kept refusing and said something along the lines of "but that is such a beautiful top" and "but the next guy to own this might not want my signature there!".  The guy shook his head and kept saying that he would never ever sell the guitar.

Joe's next words floored me - he said "So, do you plan on living forever? Because one day, someone else IS going to own that guitar...".  I had never thought about it that way myself.

In some ways, we never really own guitars - we are merely caretakers for the next generation.  That particular episode at that M&G really brought it home to me.

I thought I already chimed in, but I'm a guitar player with over 16 guitars.  I have guitars signed by KISS, Shinedown, Ace Frehley, etc. every guitar that I've gotten signed, I've had personalized and signed on body of the guitar and it makes a nicer display because people automatically see it, he can put any inspirational message you want, but I do recommend getting a wall case to protect your investment.  If he just signs the headstock anybody can just say oh well, you got it off of ebay". I personally am going to have him sign my JB GT to personalize to me as I have a JB Pelham Blue that I hope he signs the headstock becausei still play the hex lout of it.

In your case, if it were me, if I don't play, get him to sign the body and oersonalize it as well, that way you'll have something that stands on its own and if he just signs the headstock, you're just going to get a JB and nothing else!
Good luck!

I wouldn't worry for a second that someone thought I got my signed guitar off of ebay. My friends are going to know I'm telling the truth, and anyone who thinks I'm lying is not my friend and I don't want them around anyhow. And one more thing, I have a picture showing Joe and me standing together with my guitar.

again it was just my two cents but I have seen it played out where people have had there very nice guitars signed in the front and personalized then went to sell and were hard pressed to find a buyer. Just thought you should have all viewpoints. I am sure your collection is stunning. Best of luck
