Re: RIP BB King

sad

News in the blues world that begets blues of the saddest order. sad

Had the honor of watching him take total command of both the stage and audience with a grace and style that remains inimitable.  A highlight of the 4 times I'd seen him in person was during the "Let The Good Times Roll" album tour (Louis Jordan songs), with he and the band at a latter day peak.  His pairings with Bobby "Blue" Bland on albums were great times too.  And of course, listening to "Live At The Regal," as well further was performing with him as a child, were both obviously seminal in Joe's career.  Who can forget BB's comments of young man Joe "not even begun to scratch the surface" (please forgive if quote is not exact).  Joe will eventually speak, here hopefully, of BB's generousity towards him.  Much of Joe's career, I have repeatedly stated, on this forum and beyond, is based on inspiration and imitation of BB's standards and ethics. smile

The "Nightlife" collaboration on "Black Rock" is a gem, and BB's "Wooooahh" at the end with his laugh never fails to make me smile broadl! big_smile

Incidentally, those of you who don't care for Robben Ford might want to take a listen to "Riley B. King" from his "Truth" album...I'm sure there's probably a YouTube of it.

Re: RIP BB King

A day of reflection on the Great One. Feeling blue but his music lives on and his influence has been mighty. I was fortunate to have seen him a couple of times. Rest in Peace and play on in that great band in heaven Riley B. King.

Re: RIP BB King

I was lucky enough to see BB twice - when he opened for the Rolling Stones in 1969 and his wonderful 80th birthday tour (which was supported by Joe and KWS).  The list of musicians he inspired and mentored and supported would fill a very large book.  The jammin' in heaven will be extra special from now on.  Thank you for all the music.

"There's a lot of people that are in so much of a hurry to be, I guess, to be famous or that they don't want to take the time to learn to play and do all that. They'd rather just knock it down off a computer and maybe get on a game show and get famous..That's fine if that's what you want to do.

Re: RIP BB King

sad That's sad to hear.  I'm glad I got to see him play.

Re: RIP BB King

I got pretty teary eyed this morning - I can only imagine how the people who knew him as a man and a friend feel.

I hope he's found that better world somewhere...

Re: RIP BB King

Wow what a blow to the blues world. Got to see him in all his grace and glory. Thankful he gave Joe a start.  May his family feel the love he gave all of us

Re: RIP BB King

Very sad news sad Thankful we got to see him back in '92 along with Buddy Guy. I remember he commanded quite a presence on the stage as well he should given the King he is and was. Amazing how one person has had such a profound impact on countless lives both those who play the blues and those who just love listening to it. What a legacy he has left. I can only imagine how hard his passing must be on those who he mentored and knew personally. Rest in peace BB King.

Thought this might be a fitting tribute today:

Can't think of a better tribute than the man's own words....

“I’ve always tried to defend the idea that the blues doesn’t have to be sung by a person who comes from Mississippi, as I did,” he said in the 1988 book Off the Record: An Oral History of Popular Music. “People all over the world have problems. And as long as people have problems, the blues can never die.”

Love this tribute, Banshee. Rest in Peace Mr. King. You will be missed.

Re: RIP BB King

Well the true"King" is gone....A sad day, but he left us a great legacy, and if not for him, who knows where Joe would be right now....RIP BB....We'll miss you

A message from the President:

"The blues has lost its king, and America has lost a legend. B.B. King was born a sharecropper’s son in Mississippi, came of age in Memphis, Tennessee, and became the ambassador who brought his all-American music to his country and the world. No one worked harder than B.B. No one inspired more up-and-coming artists. No one did more to spread the gospel of the blues.

Three years ago, Michelle and I hosted a blues concert at the White House. I hadn’t expected that I’d be talked into singing a few lines of “Sweet Home Chicago” with B.B. by the end of the night, but that was the kind of effect his music had, and still does. He gets stuck in your head, he gets you moving, he gets you doing the things you probably shouldn’t do – but will always be glad you did. B.B. may be gone, but that thrill will be with us forever. And there’s going to be one killer blues session in heaven tonight." Barack Obama

Re: RIP BB King

Even though we knew this day was inevitable, and based on recent events most likely sooner rather than later, it is still hard to believe he's passed. So very, very sorry for your loss Joe and everyone else close to BB.

Re: RIP BB King

I've been dreading the coming of this day, ever since Mr. King went into hospital earlier this year.  Many fond memories of sharing his company, albeit for very short but precious stints... 1979, when he and his orchestra rocked the nightclub where I worked as a barback and stocked the greenroom; all those hot, sticky outdoor gigs where he highlighted a who's-who list of stars paying annual tribute to Medgar Evers... and where I met my own "Sweet Little Angel" ; then there was the 1990 Mississippi River cruise with the U of M alumni, during which I met him again, along with another great Mississippian, Mose Allison -- both class acts and such talented performers!  And just in the past couple of years, seeing another inspired Brit, Peter Frampton, perform with Mr. King at Wolf Trap in northern Virginia.   We miss you already, B.B.!  I know that you're now surrounded by "Sweet Little Angels"!
