Text: Andre WittebroekMahalia Barnes, daughter of Australian singer Jimmy Barnes and a well-known singer in Australia has teamed up with her band The Soulmates released this CD with covers by singer Betty Davis. Mahalia has a very powerful voice that is very influenced by soul, blues and rock and roll. Just like those of Betty Davis. Betty Davis, married with Miles Davis in late 1960s and had him meet with Jimi Hendrix and more psychedelic rock. She has three Cds released between 1973 and 1975, all of whom have had great influence on for example Prince, Ice Cube, Erykah Badu, Rick James. Mahalia itself is big fan of Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, etc. when she heard the music of Betty Davis she was sold. Betty is wild, raw, pure, free and powerful, that spoke her mind to and then wanted to make a CD that they ever sort. When Jimmy Barnes was in the studio with Joe Bonamassa was Mahalia there too and she sang some songs from Betty Davis for producer Kevin Shirley to see what he found. This was impressed and suggested to include a CD with Betty Davis songs and asked Joe to join and so is the production. The CD is included in three days without modification. So honest and pure as possible so.The CD opens with the very solid, rocking If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked up. Her raw voice coupled with the rocking guitar sound, the groove and put the voices in the background instantly show, good organ there. Class opener. Steppin' In Re i. Miller Shoes is again firmly but Mahalia's voice is here on the garish side, less my thing, but instrumental beats it at all. The Ballad In The Meantime begins very quiet with many organ, beautiful singing and understated guitar playing. A resting point. The soul like He Was A Big Freak swings and grooved delicious way. The funky bass opens the funky ' Your Mama Wants Your Back ' and the whole song has a great fine drive. Mahalia voice sounds softer and the little choir here makes it off. The next Game Is My Middle Name has more harmony vocals and a simpler but effective groove. Nasty Girl rocks sturdy and the ' common ' song fits well with the text. Title song Ooh Yea begins with a deep male voice and funky guitar riffs and has that funky vocals. Next comes the groove back with You Won't See Me In The Morning. A delicious funky bass is the beginning of the funky Anti-Love Song. Groove pure. In Walking Up The Road sings Jimmy Barnes with it, well more yelling than sing but that suits the text: sorrow and joy. The last song Shoo-B-Doop And Cop Him is fantastic: quiet, sensitive, a real soul-funk ballad with a Merry rhythm: a little Little Axe style. Top. conclusion: the musical this is a great CD. The band The Soul Mates do their name because it swings delicious. Soul, funk and rock come on the CD fine together and when guitarist Joe Bonamassa goes all the way. Singer Mahalia Barnes has a fine voice but in certain songs, especially Walking Up The Road, I find her too noisy. It fits the music, lyrics and Betty Davis but I personally like there not like. There will surely be people who find it beautiful. But because there are also real gems on this CD is definitely worth listening to the CD. Only those numbers are worth the purchase for me already.
