Topic: Love Ain't a Love Song Live JB Solo

Wish JB would put back the killer solo in Love Ain't a Love Song instead of the "cannodling" hes doing now over the drunks heckling!!

After all with 8 to 10 acoustic songs ya know the rowdy bunch is gonna have had a long time at the bar...so what do you expect!!

Glad JB started using humor instead of getting mad as he did the first few  shows this leg of the fall tour...

But still a killer solo that builds and goes someplace instead of the improv "canoodling"  hes doing now would be a much better transition from the keyboard solo to the drum and conga solos...imho

Re: Love Ain't a Love Song Live JB Solo

I think canoodling must have a different meaning on your side of the pond. big_smile

I'm all for shutting up the hecklers as it's one of my pet hates when I listen to live albums. Thankfully, it hasn't got too bad in the UK so far. I hope Joe's back to his blazing solo like this one Love Ain't A Love Song by the time he reaches Europe in the early spring.

That was great! Love the extended solos - that's what "live" is all about imho.

instead of the "cannodling" hes doing now

What's "cannodling?"

Yes great solo and a Moody sighting at 6:22 wink from this newer version is slowed down a lot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuLap_hY540

Yes...that is exactly the intensity the solo needs in this spot in the song (After keyboards/before drums-conga solos) similar to

Count Basie Thtr. - Red Bank, NJ 5/12/14 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN0YU6b-FAQ

and

5/10/14 Landmark Theatre - Syracuse, NY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tiR0d5 … ENcmJLHlXL

Yeah...slowed down wayyyyyy toooooo much...imho.

Got a little better 11/22 in Youngstown, OH at the Covelli Centr https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBThv-BxpK4

Had some direction and flow instead of stacato improvs...

And I don't mean an "Engineered" solo like Clapton often does...I love a different approach to the solo every night...after all it is the "Blues"...

Just want it to take you somewhere...disjointed improvs leave me a bit flat...especially after a fast paced keyboard solo and before a great drum/conga solo...

The guitar solo here imho should be blistering, whether loud or soft to act as a proper bridge between the keyboards and drums/congas or it diminishes the intensity of what came before it and after... keep the crowd vibing as you bridge into the percussion solos!!!

See you at Radio City 2nd night!!!!!

Re: Love Ain't a Love Song Live JB Solo

He started the metamorphoses of the song this summer with the Muddy Wolf band https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDrWddpafqE
Added some dynamics to a song that is normally WFO. Joe has always had portions of songs he brings down and quietly noodles and has to shush the audience. It is part of the show. At the Calling Festival and Pinkpop those were full blown rock sets no quiet parts allowed. As Rick said there isn't an unplanned riff, break or solo in any show and each show and set is constantly evolving that is what keeps things fresh. The first show in the tour and the last can vary greatly and each version of a song can vary greatly tour to tour. That is what keeps you coming back for more.

So true, so true! That's what we love about Joe!

I understand and agree somewhat and like the solo from the link you posted with Muddy Wolf Band...he used to do the quiet part during Who's Been Talkin...just don't think it fits in this song especialy in that place and that he could find a better place to show off the more quieter dynamics he's capable of in the set.

I love evolving solos...but some nights that means they suck and some nights they are killer...especially later in the tour when they have evolved over the course of the whole tour...

Go back and listen to Love Ain't a Love Song from last springs shows at Count Basie and Landmark Thtr I linked to in my above posts...

Those weren't "Rock Shows" like Pinkpop but his normal mix...and the solos blazed...

Not saying it has to be loud and or fast...although I prefer it that way in this song...low is ok(like in the Muddy Wolf Version) if not disjointed and disconnected...especially from the crowd!!

Just has to take me somewhere...and other than the first night of this leg of the tour and at Covelli Ctr 11/22 they really didn't...

Kinda left me flat and disinterested in not only the guitar solo but the drums and congas after that and the same in all the shows in between those two on this part of this tour (have not heard Rochester, NY 11/24 yet)

I listen to every JB show I can find many times exactly because it is the "blues" and should be different every night depending on the vibe of the audience and the band...

That's why I love his approach so much...and can't wait till Jan 24...

It should be an epic night!!!

Re: Love Ain't a Love Song Live JB Solo

Oh I'm not disagreeing with you, just explaining why he is probably doing it there. He does some really quiet soloing in Mountain Time and always has. He just decided to do it here too. I personally didn't find it distracting when I saw the show twice early in the tour but see how when comparing the two versions you could prefer the other arrangement and solo.

Joe could easily build the solo from quiet to raucous as he goes into the last verse. Hear that Joe? We can always hope the solo evolves some more by January. wink

Totally agree...other thing I'd like to see back in the set by Radio City Shows is "Ballpeen Hammer"...

I think it showed off the "acoustic" band lineup the best and they were doing a kick **** version before they dropped it from this leg of the fall tour!!

Re: Love Ain't a Love Song Live JB Solo

just my two cents,  Joe you can cannoodle any time.   I love it when Joe totally goes off doing something unexpected.  The best parts of any song are the new seconds that he had never played yet. Totally why I love Joe

Re: Love Ain't a Love Song Live JB Solo

As has been said before, each time is a little different, never know exactly what to expect and that's what keeps us coming back for more. If it was the same all the time it would be boring for Joe and for the rest of us. Keep doing what you're doing Joe, noodle away. Now canoodling, I think you need someone else with you to do that wink

lol  lol   lol      Right you are, Natasha!

"Canoodle" - to hug and kiss another person in a sexual way.

"Noodle" - To improvise on an instrument in an informal or desultory manner.

Heck, now I have to look up desultory...
