Added some dynamics to a song that is normally WFO. Joe has always had portions of songs he brings down and quietly noodles and has to shush the audience. It is part of the show. At the Calling Festival and Pinkpop those were full blown rock sets no quiet parts allowed. As Rick said there isn't an unplanned riff, break or solo in any show and each show and set is constantly evolving that is what keeps things fresh. The first show in the tour and the last can vary greatly and each version of a song can vary greatly tour to tour. That is what keeps you coming back for more.
I understand and agree somewhat and like the solo from the link you posted with Muddy Wolf Band...he used to do the quiet part during Who's Been Talkin...just don't think it fits in this song especialy in that place and that he could find a better place to show off the more quieter dynamics he's capable of in the set.
I love evolving solos...but some nights that means they suck and some nights they are killer...especially later in the tour when they have evolved over the course of the whole tour...
Go back and listen to Love Ain't a Love Song from last springs shows at Count Basie and Landmark Thtr I linked to in my above posts...
Those weren't "Rock Shows" like Pinkpop but his normal mix...and the solos blazed...
Not saying it has to be loud and or fast...although I prefer it that way in this song...low is ok(like in the Muddy Wolf Version) if not disjointed and disconnected...especially from the crowd!!
Just has to take me somewhere...and other than the first night of this leg of the tour and at Covelli Ctr 11/22 they really didn't...
Kinda left me flat and disinterested in not only the guitar solo but the drums and congas after that and the same in all the shows in between those two on this part of this tour (have not heard Rochester, NY 11/24 yet)
I listen to every JB show I can find many times exactly because it is the "blues" and should be different every night depending on the vibe of the audience and the band...
That's why I love his approach so much...and can't wait till Jan 24...
It should be an epic night!!!
