Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Different track same result.

Vettels tactics paid off although Webber should have challenged him in the last 10 laps, but was inexplicably stuck behind Grosjean. Great shame.

9 victories this year and if he wins a couple more he will have won over 50% of the races this year. There is no question that Vettels side of the garage do a great job but this isn't good for F1. Maybe if the tyres l#sted the whole race he would still win but a few more seasons of this and F1 will be dead as a sport.

Next season the new engines are the only hope that something will change, but the sight of these drivers only performing at 90% or less because of the tyres is killing it for me. I never thought I would say it but I can see that my love affair with F1 is almost over.

Having watched 'Rush' this past week it has only made the sterile nature of today's racing only more hard to take.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Methinks it's all over before the fat lady has even stood up.  There's no doubt Vettel is going to win his fourth championship, barring any acts of god or the like.  I can't see any of the teams making much of an effort to improve their cars for the remainder of the seaon; what with new regs next year they'll want to put all their efforts into the 2014 version.  The remaining races are going to be test and learning tracks for the Caterhams, Mariussas et al and the top teams will still be the top teams but running at around 90% as Mike says.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Just to bring this back into play ...

Congrats to Sebastian Vettel on his fourth world championship.  He hasn't really done anything wrong this year and deserves to win it.  Abu Dhabi this weekend is going to be a bit of a drag from that point of view but I'll still watch it as F1 is one of my great passions.  All I can say is c'mon Kimi!!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Hi  Lynn. Well Kimi had no luck this weekend, and no money. It will be a surprise if he turns up in Austin. 17.1 Million IS a lot of money. If he doesn't see some of it I can see him having them impounded in Texas.

As to the race, it is lap 54 as I write this and I am finding it increasingly difficult to justify the time to watch it any more. Vettel has a 30 second gap. How the hell has that been possible? Once again Webbers car is slower at the start (or he is), and then the Kers doesn't work properly.

Great champion sure, but the sport will be dead if it is like it next year. I am a long term fan but even i find it a drag. I even cancelled my Autosport subscription after 30 years!

Even the less durable tyres has played into RBulls lap this second half. I find it very depressing. In a way worse than the Schumacher era, because I don't see that he has any competition at all. The other teams seem so far behind.

I think it is NASCAR for me now.......

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

if a driver of one of the top 4(?) teams is not being paid salary it is a sad indictment on the sport and how badly it is managed where greed of some takes away from others.

This season there has been an imbalance, an massive imbalance between teams, but also between drivers in the same team where so much resource has clearly been put into one, at the expense of the other, - in this case a very talented Australian who has chosen to walk away seemingly realising that there is more to life than having to put up with being treated in such a bad way. - I admire his ability to keep quiet and walk, - can't wait for the autobiography in a few years! And to add a very respected team manager like Ross Brawn walking away does it not tell you that something is wrong and the future is not looking great?

Once again sorry to be negative about the sport but is it not time for a massive rethink on how it is run?

Sage words Ian. Vettel's utter domination showed today once again as he cruised to an effortless win.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Ian, as you know I've defended the sport of F1 on here many times, but even I now think in the same way.

The money that is taken out of the sport by CVC/Ecclestone yearly is a phenomenal sum.yet it is the teams themselves that are to blame, as they onl y see the short to mid term. Bernie knows he can always spin them on the promise of a bit more here or there when necessary.

Merc spearheaded a breakaway group 5 years ago, but even then they and the other manufacturers were only using the concept of an F1 breakaway as 'leverage' against Bernie and the FIA. They accepted another sub-standard deal and now have to live with the consequences.

The true spirit of the sport lays with the non-manufacturer teams and of course, Ferrari. Manufacturers come and go. Personally I would only allow them in the sport as driver train and system suppliers. Nothing more.

Red Bulls dominance and the new rules next year promises a further technical 'arms race' that only the deepest pockets can afford. Most in F1 do not have that financial depth any more.

Todts FIA reign has been a dead hand so far and indeed the FIA's stewardship if F1 over the last 10 years or more has been lamentable. Encouraging teams into the sport using 2nd hand equipment only to change the rules and require them to build their own cars. Then providing them with sporting advantages to stay within fixed financial parameters, only to change the rules again and require them to compete on the same basis as the rest.

F1 has disappeared up its own tailpipe sadly. Vettel IS a great driver and the records books will show that, but right now, to me, his achievements are minimised. He is the best, in the best car with the biggest budget. Of course, he is going to win. Now where is the sport in that?

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

No surprise that Kimi won't be racing in the US and Brazil. The back injury is a timely reason for his non-appearance. He needs the op and opting out now gives him more recovery time before next season.
It also draws a line under his situation at Lotus. if the money isn't forthcoming or Lotus fail to meet the terms of whatever agreement they have thrashed out expect to see the team hit with an injunction somewhere. The US would be the perfect place to do it, legal wise.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Shame Kimi won't be racing.  It's a strange situation where a driver will still commit his all to a team who aren't even paying him, but I guess he like most drivers get a fair bit of income from personal sponsorship deals.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

edit: closing on several records. Wins consecutive and wins in a season.
Watching Vettel on his leisurely Sunday drive in the USGP with 10 laps to go. He wins in a cakewalk unless he breaks . Utter dominance in that car, especially through the esses which seem quite technical and needing finesse to navigate at speed. Closing in on Senna's mark. Next year?

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

We can only hope next year throws a spanner in the works. There should be engine blows ups and who knows what. I can only hope that Merc have got a march on Renault for a while. What we do know is that the RB chassis will be right on the money.

Vettel is completely in the zone at the moment. 3 seconds up after the first 2 racing laps.

Some good drives out there today. Don't understand McLaren opting for Magnussen when Hulkenburg is available, unless it is money related but I can't think he comes too expensive, especially if Lotus want him! They haven't got any money at all just yet. It all belongs to Kimi!

Grosjean seems to have finally come good. If he keeps it up, his first win can't be far off.

Haven't seen the Sutil crash again yet. Was Maldonaldo to blame? German commentators have been very down on him these last 2 races. Short memories, all of 'em. He was the talk of the town last spring. All a bit unfair I think. The Williams has been a total dog this year. How embarrassing that they had to bolt on last years rear end this weekend and it went so much better. Bottas is definately one to watch. Ferrari driver in thr making I would say.....

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Another Sunday - same result.

But fond farwell to Mark Webber. Probably one of the unluckiest drivers to ever be on the grid, and certainly unlucky to find himself teamed with Vettel these last 5 seasons!

Despite that he has graced F1 with good humour and stoic endeavour throughout his career. He is a winner, but maybe didn't' have the selfish arrogance an F1 champion requires. Good bloke to have in the trenches with you though.

The race encapsulated his time with Vettel as a teammate really. When the later pitstops came, with Vettel having slowed substantially, Mark's pitstop takes 5.1 seconds dropping himbehind Alonso (again), whilst Vettel's 1 lap later is only 2.1 in duration.

Maybe it made no difference, but it was symptomatic of their time together.

F1's loss is sports cars gain.

Felipe Massa leaves Ferrari too. I do hope that Williams can give him something better than the dog they have had this year.

Great drive by Button today. Thank goodness this awful season is over for them.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

I too look forward to Webber in the sports car ranks. He's a natural for endurance racing and I expect a podium or two at LeMans and others for him. Let's hope for some better competition next year. I tire of commentators dropping off to discuss the race for 6th as the best action on the course.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

So that's it folks.  The last race of the season in Brazil saw the same old, same old.  Both Mercedes were quick away from the grid with Rosberg taking the lead from the start, but then order was restored and Vettel stormed past and into the distance.  It was quite deflating to see really.  Both Ferraris put up a great fight with Alonso finishing third, and let's hear it at last for McLaren.  Jensen finishing fourth must have been a real relief to this once dominant team.

Not taking anything away from Vettel but I did hope that he would allow Mark to overtake and win the race, if only as an apology for Vettel's appalling behaviour back in Malaysia when he ignored team orders not to pass Mark.  But the scent of victory and, more importantly of being the first driver to win 9 consecutive races, was too strong.  Nice to see Mark on the podium.  Always a gentleman and he will be missed.  Farewell too to Ross Brawn, but no doubt he'll retain strong connections to F1.

Next year we're back to the turbo era and new V6 engines.  Expect all the top teams to be working hard over the winter ready to unleash their machines onto a waiting F1 world.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

The season might be over, but it looks like some of the minor places for next year are already settled.

Maldonaldo's money has secured him the Lotus drive over Hulkenberg, and that shows just how perilous their situation was/is. The Quantum deal is still not done and from what I have read one of the guys behind it has been associated with a number of failed deals in the past. In which case, Lotus have decided correctly and they should be grateful.
Maldonaldo is no 'pay driver' because historically they don't have either the talent or nous to win a GP or qualify regularly in the top 10. Pastor has, and with a decent mount under him he will rediscover the form that caused all the raised eyebrows in the first place. I've been stunned by the amount of bile has been heaped on him by the German TV commentators this season when it was clear many of the incidents he was involved him were not necessarily his fault. Plus he has been lumbered with an absolute dog of a car in a team that made no secret of its support for the other driver. At at time when 30 million dollars is much needed by any team I am surprised at how Williams have behaved this season. But then again, their history is littered with examples of their rather 'indifferent' attitude drivers that did and would do, a great job for them.

So the Hulk goes back to Force India along with Perez, whilst Sutil partners Guiterez at Sauber. That McLaren didn't take Hulkenberg I find incredible. Going for an F3 graduate at this stage seems strange, but I hope for them and him it works out. Sad for di Resta as he loses his spot, but money talks in F1. He has had 3 years to find some, but doesn't think he should have to. I think I would have made the effort. He could have found himself in the Lotus seat..................

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Time for another Sport in its off season to be brought back.

So now the FIA have ratified Bernie's latest brainstorm. Double points for the last GP of the year. Full marks to Vettel, who is most likely to benefit. Even HE thinks it is a stinker.

This kind of tinkering with the sport is the antithesis of what it is all about. Bernie should know this better than anybody but naturally his view these days is dominated by viewing figures and advertising revenues. The sooner he dies of is replaced the better for all concerned and I am sorry if that offends anybody.

NASCAR in the US adjust the rules to suit the needs of the 'Show' whenever it is required, but this kind rule tinkering just doesn't fit for European series. To have fought long and hard all season and have a narrow points advantage overturned by the farcical awarding of more points for one race, that in itself, is no different from any other is just ridiculous.

If the race concerned was the Indy 500 or something similar I could at least accept the principle, but it won't be. One GP is pretty much like another.

That the FIA seem to have agreed to it is just another insult and further proof that Todt is a dead hand at the wheel of the sport. Plus while agreeing to this they allowed teams with heavier drivers to be penalised by NOT upping the minimum weight of the driver car combination.

As a hitherto ardent fan of the 'sport', with Webber leaving, these stupid rules, Bernie's continued involvement, virtually every team except Red Bull, Merc, McLaren and Ferrari with dire financial problems, the future doesn't look bright. I'll reserve judgement for now but I'm actually not looking forward to the season starting again.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Well said Mike. I agree
Look at the Nascar "chase" as an example. There's a strategy for the first part of the season, then another for the top cars that qualify for the champs. Jimmy Johnson plays it like a fiddle. Run hard and qualify early, then play with setups to find the optimal combo for the chase races and fall back while tuing with not so hot results, then win the cup.
If they start some shenanigans like that in F1 it would be a disaster IMO.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Can't think of anyone who's said anything positive about this stoopid double points thing.  It makes a farce out of formula 1.  Who's to say that any one race is better than the others?

But, there is a very funny side to it all courtesy of Lotus who came up with 18 rules all of their own, some of them are:

1.  Any driver who has a pet named "Roscoe" will start from the back of the grid.  On even days only.  Does not apply in April.

2. Any driver celebrating his birthday on the day of qualifying will be granted pole position, 10 points and a Ferrari garage tour.

3.  All driver managers will be compelled to spend at least one Grand Prix telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

4.  Any loophole exploiting devices can only be used if they have a cool name.  "Stingray 2000 Optimiser" allowed: "Keith" not allowed.

5.  Championship points deciders will be determined by rock, paper, scissors or cage fight.

6.  Any driver beating Sebastian Vettel will get a double at the bar.

7.  All drivers named Sebastian Vettel will complete their own pit stops without outside assistance from their mechanics.
