Re: Ryan McGarvey

Well he certainly blew the whole crowd away at Carlisle and got a standing ovation after finishing the set with a 20 minute Mystic Dream incorporating Kashmir. Most of the audience hadn't seen him before but I'm sure they will follow him now. The set was only an hour long so they went for it big time. Very brave to do 3 instrumentals. The band is tighter than earlier in the year when I saw them. Roll on Kinross next week.

Re: Ryan McGarvey

He's one of my great favourites.  I hope that he can make the same career as Joe Bonamassa. He deserve it.

Re: Ryan McGarvey

Superlative? Seismic? Or just bloody amazing? How on earth do you start to describe Ryan's performances? Saturday saw his return to Hartlepool, Tommy had booked a room twice the size of Ryan's debut visit, it was still packed out (almost 300 people), and boy, did Ryan, Logan & Justin deliver.

Appetites where whetted by The Mentulls giving it 110%, but I'm sure the lads would agree, better to go before Ryan, than after. He did things to that Strat & Les Paul that just blew everyone's mind. Tracks from his current 2 albums came and went, no covers in the set, then Ryan also "teased" us with a new song, Memphis, with a dirty, grinding rhythm that made it an instant classic. Mystic Dream was the 20 minute plus encore, again with the Kashmir (only "cover") insert: mind blowing. How he works that switch on the Les Paul to get that stutter - his hand is a blur.

Lord knows what he's going to do in Darlington on Friday - the room's barely quarter-size to Hartlepool - maybe if they fill him up with enchiladas & burritos before the show, it may slow him down.....hope not!!!

Re: Ryan McGarvey

Another standing ovation last night, this time at the fabulous Kinross venue. 2 hour show culminating in a 22 minute version of Mystic Dream which has to be up there with the best set closers ever. Here's a version from Germany last month :

Not enough adjectives to confirm how I feel about this band. Let the music do the talking.

Spoke to Ryan after the show so expect a live DVD in the spring and a studio album later in 2014.

Booked for the Linton Festival in June and Maryport in July. Both UK.

Re: Ryan McGarvey

Well, they were right;  the burritos and quesadilla didn’t slow Ryan, Logan & Justin down, if anything, they must have been full of chilies and smothered in tabasco the way the guys played the Voodoo Café.

This must have physically been the smallest room Ryan & band have played on this British tour, but I’d guess it was the most densely packed; about 100 in the room over the Voodoo Café. This was Ryan’s first time in Darlington and the welcome was as hot as the chilli sauce served downstairs and if anything, the guys embraced the intimacy of the venue and played a blinder. As soon as Ryan walked out, picked up the ‘Strat there was a feeling that something “Texas” special was going to happen, and for 50 minutes, the guys never let up; Justin’s bass lines were smooth, sinewy, threading through Logan’s powerhouse drumming (looking perilously close to the window at his back), and Ryan was off the scale, making his Strat howl and weep in equal measure with some of the sweetest Texas blues you’ll hear this side of SRV.

After a short break, Ryan picked up the Les Paul and steamed into Blues Knocking At My Door and there were driving riffs aplenty after that, giving the LP a rest for one song, picking up a fresh axe for All The Little Things. Darlington had long since been eating out Ryan’s hand, and so when the encore, Mystic Dream started, the place exploded and was soon littered with dropped jaw-bones from the newbies.

Have to admit, only previously experiencing an acoustic gig in Voodoo café, I was dubious about a “plugged-in” band in such a small room, but the sound was superbly handled, and if anything, being reduced just further highlighted Ryan’s awesome technique: it also helped just standing a few feet from him, watching a craftsman at work. The way Ryan has been picked up in the UK, gigs like this will become a rare treat, so next time round, watch out for them as much as the bigger venues.

As well as appearances next year at Linton & Maryport festivals here in the UK, as previously mentioned, Ryan hopes to be recording a "live" DVD next spring, in the band's 2nd home, Germany.

Well, after this 2 week run, I guess Ryan now "owns" the UK, I've asked him to knock the lights off and lock up before he flies back to New Mexico. After a tour like this, and the reviews that have been coming in - gotta give Linda & John a huge "Thanks" for looking after Ryan & the guys and setting up some great gigs.

Re: Ryan McGarvey

Nice review, Mike. Having seen him in a small venue earlier this year I know what an impact Ryan can have on the audience in a room that size. Stunning would be a good adjective to describe the effect on the senses.

I'm sad that I wasn't able to catch Ryan this time round but will try to see him next year. If the DVD can't be recorded in the UK then I know that George, Andre, Günter etc. will give Ryan and the guys a warm welcome in Germany.
