Topic: Ryan McGarvey

There's a nice interview in the new Premier Guitar Mag. from Crossroads. Ryan would love to tour Europe. If you have any suggestions for appropriate venues, let him know. He is an amazing player and will be huge!   Cathy

Re: Ryan McGarvey

Europe???  It would be nice if the guy would play in the U.S. somewhere other than New Mexico to start with. His CD is fantastic. He needs to hit the road. Everyone I have played his cd for has ordered it.

Ryan - come to SoCal !!!

Re: Ryan McGarvey

+1 for SoCal. Forget Europe, cultivate your American base Ryan. Look at the airfare you'll save.

Re: Ryan McGarvey

Maybe he could stop in Boston on his way to Europe!

So want to see this guy again - he was amazing at Crossroads.

"There's a lot of people that are in so much of a hurry to be, I guess, to be famous or that they don't want to take the time to learn to play and do all that. They'd rather just knock it down off a computer and maybe get on a game show and get famous..That's fine if that's what you want to do.

Re: Ryan McGarvey

For the London area, tell him to contact Pete Feenstra at www.feenstra.co.uk - Pete is always looking for new talent to showcase at his venues in and around London UK (as long as the price is right) - isn't it about time Ryan released a new album? - is he signed to a label or does he self promote/release? Ryan's first album was great, his style sounding the closest thing to an early JB album that I have ever heard!!!! In fact I'll give it another listen on the ipod right now!!!!

Re: Ryan McGarvey

Cathy

Loved Ryan's debut album and heard a great review of the follow up.

Europe is a Continent - I'd be happy to recommend a Scottish venue or two if I had some idea of dates for the UK.

Would be great to have him over here.

Tom

Re: Ryan McGarvey

I agree with the above....let's get to some of the good old U.S.A. before hitting Europe....how about a west coast swing including Portland, of course......?

Murfdog

Re: Ryan McGarvey

He'd do well at the Belly Up or Coach House. Both places Joe has appeared multiple times on his way up. A day's drive from his normal haunts. (then a swing up the coast murphdog, and J Dawg could get a shot on the way.  cool )

Thanks to Keith for posting this absolute gem on FB! I decided to put it in here since there are enough Davy Knowles topics to make you dizzy.  wink

have not heard any of it, but will order ASAP, thanks Mike. thanks George for the vid, they are very good together.
I wanted to hear more of him and went on UTube, to find "Ain't Enough Whiskey" and listened to just a little. Shocking, my son said hey that's Joe Bonamassa(he couldn't see my screen), what show is that from? I said no, that's Ryan McGarvey. It is absolutely scary how much he sounds like Joe on that song, not just the guitar tone but the voice as well. Now I'm pretty sure it cannot be a bad thing to sound like Joe, just not on every song. I'm excited about the CD, without searching did anybody do a review here that anyone remembers? thanks again,

Tres

Re: Ryan McGarvey

I don't think a review has been done.  Ryan's one and only CD is called "Forward in Reverse" from 1997.  He's not the best vocalist, but man can that guy play.  "Blue Eyed Angel Blues" & "Cryin Over You" are my two favorite tracks on the album followed closely by an instrumental tribute to SRV titled "Texas Special"

A must have for Blues/Rock fans

P.S.  "Ain't Enough Wiskey" is a great tune, but it's not on his CD

Oh and another video of Mr. Knowles and Mr. McGarvey  from 2009 "What In The World"

I didn't film these, but did come into possession of the video yesterday, and after weighting the audio deficiency vs performance value - I decided these deserved to be seen.

Re: Ryan McGarvey

good review, thanks Keith and for the vids. I think his voice is quite adequate, easy on the ears like Joe. You don't want too slick of a vocal when playing blues/rock like this. I'm really impressed, but have to wonder why he hasn't put out anything in 13 years. what, are his parents loaded or does he have a really good paying job that he just cannot leave? at 21, if the CD was even a minor success, wouldn't you follow with something? I just don't get it. looking forward to listening to it, time to go find a copy somewhere.

My goof, the album is from 2007

Re: Ryan McGarvey

Brought Ryan here in November he was routing through to a show in St. Louis. He is one of the few guitar players to wow me since seeing Joe for the first time. I'm with Rockfarmer on the vocals and feel he has the chops on guitar he just needs to find his vocal identity. Work on his delivery and phrasing. I don't think it is bad by any means it just needs some timbre and grit. He can flat play past any vocal shortcomings he may have though. I think he will realize he may need to work on it to grow beyond the audience of guitar slinger fans.

Ryan is a devout fan and friend of Joe's I consider him part of the family and deserving any help we can give him. He is just in a place a lot of bands are in, trying to break out of being a regional act. I think he would have a much easier go of it in Europe where guitar players have a bigger audience. It helped Joe's career to break there. The US is a major tough nut to crack. When Joe was Ryan's age he did have not only a management deal but a booking agency. Makes a world of difference.

Right now Ryan is having to do it on his own although his stock is rising there is a certain amount of hard knocks he will have to endure before the gigs start rolling in. I would like to see him get a deal with Mascot for European release and then maybe Favored Nations here. He is that kind of player. Until then he needs all the help he can get. He is winning fans and friends in the musician community and that will help building that fanbase he does have the drive and motivation he just needs a break or two.

Re: Ryan McGarvey

Thanks for the vids keith. These two together is almost more than my old heart can handle. Love those young'ins.
I keep getting the feeling something is on the horizon for Ryan. Maybe a label?, then a new CD??? My fingers are crossed.
Jim, you are spot on!! I can only speak from experiences I've had on the Continent, but they come out in droves for guitar driven rock/blues. Walter Trout, Michael Burks, Joe. There are smaller venues, but more of them. I also want to give props to his band. His bass player is a blast to watch. I also agree with the feelings I had the first time I heard him. He understands tone. He's going places!      Cathy

Just too cute!  lol

Have to agree that artists of, for example, Ryan's 'stature' in the US, would have everything to gain career-wise by coming over to this side and touring UK/NL/GER. There are hundreds of suitable, small-ish venues that attract enthusiastic audiences, and most of the distances are 'easy' by US standards.

Re: Ryan McGarvey

Well Jim, Cathy and George, he is coming to Europe to the Grolsch Schoeppingen Bluesfestival!! He confirmed yesterday.
Cathy and George thank you so much for contacting Ryan for me and because of that Richard Hoelscher could do the rest. Now we are trying to book more shows for him in Holland, Belgium and Germany that periode.
It's Ryan s first trip to Europe so he is very exited about it.
I hope Joe reads this and has some tips for Ryan about Europe.

Thanks again Cathy and george. Cathy and George there are  free tickets for you  for the festival!
